to be shocked by the way this family eats?

A friend told me about a woman she knows who has 3 year old twins and a 2 year old. Her husband works away for long periods of time. She doesn't cook while he's away - the children eat freezer food like fish fingers, chicken nuggets etc and she has ready meals. When he's home he cooks, but when he's away they just eat things from the oven for convenience.

I can't begin to imagine what life is like with 3 under 3 but surely preparing fresh food at least occasionally is important for nutrition and learning about food? I find it really odd and a bit sad.

Apparently feeding a family of 6 on a monthly budget of £100 is stupid when I own an iPad, because they are expensive....

I apologise but it touched a nerve :)

Witchofthenorth · 05/03/2012 10:25

Oh and and and, since I am well and truly on my high horse, I didnt know my lovely lovely husband, cashed in on his holidays to pay for said iPad, so I couldn't insist he put that money into the household expenses.

TheBigJessie · 05/03/2012 10:25

Or, another way to put it, Hecuba

Fresh broccoli 300/90=3.33g per penny.

Frozen broccoli 1000g/ 189 =5.29g per penny. Bargain!

ByTheWay1 · 05/03/2012 10:33

ahhh, but the guinea pigs won't get fed! They eat the stalks, leaves and manky bits of the fresh broccoli - but won't touch frozen!

Hecubasdaughter · 05/03/2012 10:56

Not a problem when you don't have any pets.

Tmesis · 05/03/2012 11:23

Honeydragon, lycopenes also v important in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. I can virtually guarantee that you won't get prostate cancer...

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 11:29

oooooh get me,preventing cancer with tonight's sausage casserole as well as heart disease. Grin

Actually, the people arguing most voraciously about the benefits of tinned and frozen food, appear to be to most educated about nutrition, and aware more of the logistics of food and how it gets here.

Witches. He is lovely Smile, he sounds like mine, he knew if you told him you wouldn't let him do it for you. I would've been massively touched and rather cross -like I was with my laptop--

Well if guinea pigs are good enough for Peruvians.....

justanuthermanicmumsday · 05/03/2012 11:44

she must be tired especially since all the kids are so small. i have 3 kids 5 and under and 1 on the way, spd too lovely!

i have to cook every other day usually, my food is never finished first day, indian food goes a long way. still cooking from scratch even 1 dish takes 1 hour i usually do 2 dishes.

but i feel like everythings getting on top of me,a mountain of ironing and cleaning, severe spd pain, so i see no way out other than bulk cooking and tupaware in the fridge. btw i hate cooking my own ethnic food, but any new cuisines especially baking sweet dishes i love!

u dont know this woman so best not to speak of her. but like u said its not a daily thing only when her husband is away it wont harm them. least they ar getting fed, i know kids who are missng meals because mum cant cope that is far worse.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 11:44

You know that Goodwins law thingy?

I reckon we should have a 'if you can afford internet/ipad/laptop/free range eggs you aint poooooooorrrrrrr' law.

The moment anyone uses it they should be ignored for at least 4 pages. Repeat offenders will be sent on some sort of internet rehab where they will have to learn to come up with better formed arguments.

Can we call it DeVere's Law please?

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 11:46

MrsDevere Grin

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 11:47

Manicmumsday I fucking well love your name! You are now officially my best named mnetter

CappyHunt · 05/03/2012 11:47

DeVere's Law sounds much better Wink

ByTheWay1 · 05/03/2012 11:49

shhhhhhhhhh shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shhhhhhhhhhh - the guinea pigs will hear you!!! No we are NOT going to eat them - well, they are safe until the economy really goes bang! Any recipies - and if I freeze them first does it alter the nutritional value Wink

Glittertwins · 05/03/2012 11:52

If you eat the guinea pig that ate the broccoli, does that mean you get the nutrients of the broccoli??

fatherchewylouis · 05/03/2012 11:56

I use an iPad and didn't pay a penny for it (am not a thief). Using an iPad doesn't mean you are spending the food budget on frivolous technology!

On topic, I have started using frozen veg because it is wasteful the number of times I have had to throw out fresh veg that hasn't been used in time (should probably meal plan better but frozen veg is perfectly fine so go with this)

Witchofthenorth · 05/03/2012 11:57

That sounds like a plan MrsDevere

Your are exactly right honeydragon I was so touched, but very only a teensy bit angry at him. I actually squealed like a child when he gave it to me for Christmas, then promptly ignored the entire family pretty much all of Christmas day :o

Now that he as to fend for himself and the kids have turned feral, he is wishing he hadn't bothered :)

Portofino · 05/03/2012 12:04

I have an iPad and an organic box!

Witchofthenorth · 05/03/2012 12:09

portofino your obviously faaaaar to rich for this thread. I kindly ask you to leave!! :):)

TheBigJessie · 05/03/2012 12:13

A portion of the broccoli's nutritional value will be unavailable to the cold-hearted person killing said adorable fluffykins guinea-pig, because the guinea pig will have used it for general life, or will have laid it down in bits people won't eat.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 12:20

I love Guinea pigs.

Woodlands · 05/03/2012 12:21

D'y know, it had never occurred to me to buy frozen broccoli. I didn't know such a thing existed. I shall pick some up when I go to Sainsbury's later and give it a go!

TheBigJessie · 05/03/2012 13:10

Iceland's frozen broccoli is £1 per 900g bag. That's 9g per penny!
