I call all mine lambykins as well.

rhonda I can assure you that my DD was being bought up to be a strong and independant woman who valued education and intelligence over her (considerable) beauty.
Calling her princess did nothing to dilute the values I worked so hard to instill in her. Not even printing it on a pink skinny teeshirt did that.

She wanted to be a lawyer.

expecting girls to meet some sort of princess 'ideal' is a different matter. Calling them princess (particularly if you are a wc londoner) is not the same thing.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/02/2012 21:19

Thanks for the snog Psam Grin

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/02/2012 21:19

I thought it was a sort of cockney thing, just a term of endearment.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 28/02/2012 21:22

i call the dds "princess", when I'm not calling them "sweetheart"
as MrsDeVere mentions, it's a rather commonplace term of endearment if you're a Londoner

Psammead · 28/02/2012 21:23

Makes sense if it's cockney wc because that's my roots too. Although I was always 'puddin' Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/02/2012 21:26

she is loved and cherished and I let her know that in every way possible, including with 'nauseating' pet names

Likewise my ds, Psam

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/02/2012 21:29

Haha puddin'! My uncle has called me a variation on that for almost 40 years :)

Psammead · 28/02/2012 21:31

Grin My dad still answers the phone to me saying 'oh, hello pud' and I'm 31! I roll my eyes but I love it. Long live family nicknames Smile

Psammead · 28/02/2012 21:32

Of course he follows it up with '... I'll just get your mum' but it's all he really needs to say, actually.

thegreylady · 28/02/2012 21:34

I used to call dd Panda!!

Kindling · 28/02/2012 21:34

I don't like and wouldn't use the term princess myself for my DD but i have heard DH say it. I prefer less disneyfied names that dont have so much baggage already -flowerpot, sweet pea, pumpkin, darling, miss monkeypants....

Anyone else is entitled to call their DC any term of endearment they please.

VickityBoo · 28/02/2012 21:36

Oh dd is princess, munchkin, pumpkin, pumpkin-pie, treacle, poppet...whatever comes out at the time!

tralalala · 28/02/2012 21:36

Up here it is associated with all things pink. And llinked to the whole pinkification of girls. the word chav is far far more offensive.

VickityBoo · 28/02/2012 21:39

Sweet-pea, beautiful, hunnybun...oh I call her so much I'm amazed she knows her name lol.

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 21:41

Haven't read whole thread but I often call my DDs princess.

I think it's because my mum always used to call me Queen and I hated it (Queens are old and princesses are young and beautiful doncha know?) I always wanted to be a princess!

DD1 loves being my princess! DD2...well she's only 12 months old so I could call her Snot Faced Poo Breath and she wouldn't care.

pointythings · 28/02/2012 22:18

I've called mine all sorts over the years - never Princess, though. More notable ones include Gargoyle, Fiend, Uckymup (DD2 slang for 'Mucky Pup'), Sausage, Chops (I'm a carnivore, can you tell? Grin) and Creatures.

All this aside from the usual 'darling, sweetheart' etc more normal stuff.

Fecklessdizzy · 28/02/2012 22:34

Does anyone remember Xenia - Warrior Princess? ( totally dates self )

She was well hard and not even remotely pink ...

Psammead · 29/02/2012 07:27

I really do not associate 'princess' with pink, disney, spoilt etc. To me it just means something like 'my special, sweet girl'.

I call mine rats or ocassionally "Ths Ratlets".

It is affectionate, honest. I really like rats!

CaoNiMa · 29/02/2012 08:46

"Little man" has to be the worst.

Unless your son is an adult midget or dwarf, he is not your "little man".

ShowOfHands · 29/02/2012 09:02

I don't like prince/princess/lil man/hun/bubs etc just in a general way but I don't like them in the same way I don't really like puppies or jam or belts which are too wide to do the job of being belts. They're not things I'd start a thread about and I'm not retching into a bucket on a daily basis because I've heard somebody refer to their little princess.

It's funny how nicknames develop though. Because you hear other people say them and think you twee thing you, but then you turn round and shout 'RaftyDaftyDoody and SquigsyBobsyJoe it's dinner time'. I genuinely refer to ds and dd this way. And it comes from genuine affection. But sounds bloody ludicrous to the outside ear. They also get fishfinger face, squigsy, chicken egg, monkey chops joe, raftamouse, dudey duderson and a whole host of weird and wonderful terms.
