to love it when people don't have their FB privacy settings set high?

I've just spent a very pleasant hour viewing photos of friends of friends, people I've lusted over, people who I never particularly liked, on FB as their settings have their photos viewable to all.

I feel a bit wrong like I've been snooping, but I haven't because if they don't want all and sundry to see them their settings should be higher.

Love it too. People from my year at school are starting to get married, myself and DearTwin get to judge their wedding dresses from afar. Do feel slightly bad afterwards though!

cherrytopping · 25/02/2012 23:29

'FB stalking' can be fun. I'll admit to having done it in the past.

However they've now changed stuff so if you search/click on someone you might appear on their 'people you may know' box. If you know this, you can have a good idea who is snooping on you. That said, if they can't use privacy settings the chances of them knowing this are minimal.

Slartybartfast · 25/02/2012 23:31

agreed, it is so annoying when they are only visible to friends and i dont believe that people can see wh looked. despite there being a thing tht says so

cherrytopping · 25/02/2012 23:46

One of my DH's workmates suddenly appeared on the 'people you may know box'. My DH does not have him as a friend on FB, my name is stupidly common and my privacy setting stupidly high.

The only way that FB could link him to me would be if he had clicked through my DH's public profile to mine. Definitely snooping.

Manda91 · 26/02/2012 00:24

Everyone loves a bit of FB stalking Wink x

GothAnneGeddes · 26/02/2012 00:29

Love it! I wish I'd gotten into Fb sooner, as I'm sure there was this glorious period when no one cared about privacy and you could snoop endlessly.

EdinburghRocks · 26/02/2012 00:32

dont you find its more difficult to snoop look now though with this stupid timeline? Ive noticed lots of people cant be searched. In the old days you just got a long list of people with that name. Not anymore though.

my2centsis · 26/02/2012 00:35

I find it even funnier that someone I had a disagreement with a few weeks back has deleted me yet Their profile is public Lmao

Selks · 26/02/2012 01:04

Yes, love it too.

I occasionally snoop on the Facebook page of a young man who was son of a friend I'm now estranged from. I last saw him as a young boy and it's interesting to see the young man he's grown into...he is a mad traveller type living it up in south Asia.....it's entertaining to see his photos! Grin

Naturally I have my security settings sky high Grin

k8tykins · 26/02/2012 02:48

That what FB is for. Snopping & showing off posting!

k8tykins · 26/02/2012 02:53

Ps love it!

MrsKittyFane · 26/02/2012 07:10

The list on people you may know come from:
The e-mail account you have used to open FB (other people's e-mail addresses you have saved are linked up with their FB accounts and appear on 'people you may know'

Friends of friends (when several of your friends are friends with the same person)
Random friends of friends.

MrsKittyFane · 26/02/2012 07:13

And I love FB snooping :D

savoycabbage · 26/02/2012 07:14

One of my 'people you may know' is a woman I bought a car seat cover pattern from years ago. She lives in Alaska.

My friend FB stalked our new teacher and she then came up on the teachers suggestions. She was Blush

catgirl1976 · 26/02/2012 10:29

YANBU - Nothing more annoying then when your whim to have an innocent look total stalk through the photos of an old acquataince is denied.

And nothing more marvellous than when they just haven't bothered with the security and you can have good old judge / perv catch up

EdinburghRocks · 26/02/2012 11:11

Is it me or, with this new timeline how do you see other peoples friends? I hate it and am avoiding as long as I can.

Also, the people I went to school with. I dont know any of their married names.

Im not a very good stalker at all Sad

CrabbyBigbottom · 26/02/2012 11:21

The e-mail account you have used to open FB (other people's e-mail addresses you have saved are linked up with their FB accounts and appear on 'people you may know'

I second this; it raids and logs your email address book. Shock Angry FB suggested to me a dog trainer with whom I'd only ever had email contact (2 years previously!), and a distant cousin with whom I'd had an email exchange the week before he suddenly appeared as a person 'you may know'. Shocking invasion of privacy.

FoofFighter · 26/02/2012 11:29

But it's not an invasion of privacy when you have asked FB to look through your aol/yahoo etc email account to find people when you start, and you click to accept or not - it says very clearly what this is for so can't blame FB for that.

People also come up if you and they have phone numbers stored on FB, it links somehow through smartphones. Several contacts on DP's mobile when he put them into his phone automatically put up their FB picture as an icon for example.

FoofFighter · 26/02/2012 11:29

Also people who are in the same groups as you can show up as people you might now.

it's called networking people!

perceptionreality · 26/02/2012 12:08

I heard that although, the group of friends who show up on your profile used to be random, it is now people who click on your profile the most. Not sure if it's true but the people who show up on mine are various combinations of no more than the same 20 people on my friend list (needs to get out more...)

AmberLeaf · 26/02/2012 12:12

The only way that FB could link him to me would be if he had clicked through my DH's public profile to mine. Definitely snooping

No true.

Thats not true either perception.

AmberLeaf · 26/02/2012 12:13

Oh and yes OP I love a bit of open profile FB stalking!

perceptionreality · 26/02/2012 12:15

How do you know AmberLeaf? Oh and I would like to know who the list on my home page is (you know, by chat) who are always there even when my chat is off.

perceptionreality · 26/02/2012 12:16

Sometimes people appear on mine who I have emailed (usually professional connection)

AnxiousPanxious · 26/02/2012 12:19

I LOVE doing this
The sheer JOY when you find out, for example, that the drippy crusty who looked down on you at uni for not being out there enough is now working in local government admin and married to a truly truly tedious cycling enthusiast.
(Nothing wrong with those things btw, just that she behaved as though she'd be...different.)
