to think that this way of labelling toilets in a pub is just wrong

went to a new pub the other day. Headed off to the toilets to be confronted with one door saying "Men" and the other saying "Not Men"

i mean... you're either a man or you're defined by not being one.

Meant to remark on it to the chap behind the bar but decided I'd probably had one too many girly shandies.

OP posts:

People with too much time on their hands who are determined to Be Offended IMO.

I do like Chicks and Dicks though :D

SilentBoob · 26/02/2012 13:51

I live in the Middle East where both men and women wear dresses and head coverings. The little people signs on the toilet doors are not terribly helpful.

sonicrainboom · 26/02/2012 13:55

I'm a bit shocked people have the energy to be offended by offended people. Seriously it's making me offended

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 26/02/2012 14:02

TOTALLY trivial OP, not worth worrying about AT ALL. Just like all the misogynistic T shirts are trivial too, as are all the rape jokes, page 3, Nuts and Zoo, comments in the street etc. etc. ... haven't you got anything IMPORTANT to worry about? Haven't you got a sense of humour? Hmm

Truth is, while all these things can be dismissed as trivial in themselves, they add up and leave us wading through a flood of misogyny which is exhausting and depressing to deal with on a daily basis before we even start on the 'important' issues. Try challenging it and where do you start? Whatever you pick as your starting point it will be dismissed as trivial.

YANBU but I don't blame you for not saying anything. If it was me I'd go back with a well thought out objection and a mouthy friend.

FilterCoffee · 26/02/2012 14:20

Couldn't agree more Plenty, very well said.

PenguinArmy · 26/02/2012 14:26

Gosh two whole threads in two minutes where people who think the OP is being unreasonable for finding sexist crap offensive tell her to 'lighten up'.

Handmaiden central round here this afternoon Hmm

rhibutterfly · 26/02/2012 15:52

i find it less offensive than in one pub i've been .....bulls and cows!!!!

raspberrytipple · 26/02/2012 15:56

I don't get why we separate loos, can't they just have unisex cubicles

Pendeen · 26/02/2012 15:57

" Truth is, while all these things can be dismissed as trivial in themselves, they add up and leave us wading through a flood of misogyny which is exhausting and depressing to deal with on a daily basis before we even start on the 'important' issues. "

You must lead a very quiet life.

hocuspontas · 26/02/2012 16:00

I like 'gulls' and 'buoys' at our local Ship Inn.

RagamuffinAndFidget · 26/02/2012 16:08

There's a pub near me which has labelled their toilets 'Hogs' and 'Sows'. I just thought it was a bit funny tbh. As for 'Men' and 'Not Men'.. I expect there's a pub somewhere with the opposite.. no need to get offended, it's a laff!

Tigerstripes · 26/02/2012 16:09

'right whales' and 'sperm whales' at a pub in new zealand. Liked that one. :)

The whole point though is that it wouldn't be "Women" and "Not women" - if this was just as likely, then it wouldn't be problematic. But I have a very hard time imagining this existing anywhere.

The problem is that it is men who are the default, as is the general position in life.

BupcakesandCunting · 26/02/2012 17:40

I like Boils and Ghouls on our local ghost train.

Takeresponsibility · 26/02/2012 17:44

"Men" and "better than Men"

I don't see the problem really

GentleOtter · 26/02/2012 17:52

OP take a good black marker pen with you next time and rectify the sign.

I detest these 'stags and hinds' or Gaelic ones which cause a near miss while you stand and figure out wtf.

Our local was straightforward. The women's facility was inside, the men outside.

Lueji · 26/02/2012 17:55

They probably struggled with women or ladies and decided on neither.

takingiteasy · 26/02/2012 22:49

But we're not men, surely that's a fact? Yeah it's a bit odd and pointless but I don't think it's damaging and setting the sisterhood back.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 27/02/2012 16:33

But surely you can get male and female vampires and male and female werewolves? Someone really hasn't thought that one through Grin

Bogeyface · 27/02/2012 16:36

Werewolves turn into violent slavering animals once a month. I actually do find that one offensive.

Bogeyface · 27/02/2012 16:36

Unless the Vamps is the ladies in which case it isnt offensive but really farking stoopid and makes absolutely no sense at all!
