to think that this way of labelling toilets in a pub is just wrong

went to a new pub the other day. Headed off to the toilets to be confronted with one door saying "Men" and the other saying "Not Men"

i mean... you're either a man or you're defined by not being one.

Meant to remark on it to the chap behind the bar but decided I'd probably had one too many girly shandies.

"Women" and "Wankers"

Now THAT would be funny.

Flanelle · 25/02/2012 22:49

Indeed!

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 25/02/2012 22:51

I love 'Man' and 'Not Man' Grin

I do have a bit of a thing about new ways to signpost loos in places though, and I applaud anyone who can come up with a new way of doing it.

M0naLisa · 25/02/2012 22:56

why couldnt it have said
women
and
not women

Heyyyho · 25/02/2012 22:57

Really really offensive.

Think about it. It reduces us to nothing, something that doesn't warrant a title, like cattle; inhuman somehow. The man who chose those signs hated women and I would frequent where I was obviously not wanted.

Bogeyface · 25/02/2012 23:00

The man who chose those signs hated women

Okaaaaaaaay.

Or, perhaps he is just a knob! You are reading waaay too much into it methinks!

Mia4 · 25/02/2012 23:01

It's a damn sight beter then the 'ho's' and 'bro's' one that was on a pub I went in last week! I prefer the 'shelias' one...dunno why

marshmallowpies · 25/02/2012 23:10

I say loo because it's what we always said at home...I don't like saying 'toilet' either, but when I say 'loo' in polite company these days it's like I've asked where can I go to have a piss? So I say 'the ladies'...or 'the facilities'...both of which make me cringe.

Silly names on loo doors make me cringe too, but even worse are the signs that say things like 'if you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be sweet and wipe the seat' Blush

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 25/02/2012 23:20

I wonder if it was meant to indicate ?

Maybe they were trying not to make young boys uncomfortable about using the 'not men' toilet?

FilterCoffee · 25/02/2012 23:24

YANBU

Agree with all those who said it was not funny and sexist because it assumes men are the default. I would have complained. And the staff would probably have thought I was a nutter.

RunnyGrobbles · 26/02/2012 11:16

Am I in the right place for the RadFem recruiting drive?

sonicrainboom · 26/02/2012 13:18

It kind of reminds me of "Whites" and "Non-whites"

sonicrainboom · 26/02/2012 13:18

What is a RadFem recruiting drive?

welliesandpyjamas · 26/02/2012 13:24

But but but listen... The signs are shouting at dim, drunk men, not belittling women!

Picture it...man trying to find loo...sees door...goes to push...he focuses on what it says...and it tells him in big clear simple words "no, turn around, walk away, this is Not Men, you need to pee elsewhere!"

sonicrainboom · 26/02/2012 13:29

Drunk men generally do not think they're ladies do they? At least not the ones I know.

welliesandpyjamas · 26/02/2012 13:33

Maybe you know a nicer class of drunk who doesn't wander in to the wrong loo, and who can focus and read Grin

RustyBear · 26/02/2012 13:33

Thing about objecting to 'toilet' or 'loo' or any other name is that they are all euphemisms, there is actually no accurate word for it.

BertieBotts · 26/02/2012 13:34

And dads never take their kids into the mens?? Oh dear, I must tell dp to stop then in case someone gets the wrong idea [] hmm

Aribura · 26/02/2012 13:41

Still finding the word "toilet" the most offensive thing on this thread

takingiteasy · 26/02/2012 13:43

Chicks and Dicks.

takingiteasy · 26/02/2012 13:44

I'm a bit shocked people have the energy to find that offensive though. Nothing else to worry about?
