AIBU to ask for £2.50 more?

a mum in my childs class asked me today if I would take her child to school in the morn x3 days a week. She will drop dc round at 8.20 and i will take them to school.

I hope I wont have to feed them!

she said she would pay me 7.50 a week to do this and school starts at 8.50
she said her shifts at work have been changed and she cant swap them.
I live opposite my school.

it means the house will have to be tidier, wel all have to be dressed and available to the child. I dont know, in one way i wish she hadnt offered money, but on the other hand i HATE mornings and it will be an inconveience.

the child is not a friend of my childs, they are in yr1. they dont not get on but you know.

AIBU to ask for £10? or am i being a complete bitch who needs to be reminded how hard cc can be (i should bloody know).

Advice? comments?

if this is giving you so much grief before you even start, then just say sorry, you don't want to do it..

DestinationUnknown · 21/02/2012 16:56

Hmm tricky - you get yourself into these things, it can be hard to get yourself out of them again.

If you're going to do it, be very clear on rules. eg:

  1. £10 a week paid on first morning of week (so there is room for her to bring it the next two days if she forgets.)
  2. If no payment forthcoming in one week, the arrangement stops - you can just tell her if that happens, don't need to say that up front but means you can say "I assume you don't want to carry on as you haven't paid me for last week")
  3. Child is to come in, sit in front of TV / read a book. There will be no breakfast, no entertaining, no running off to play in your dc's room etc.
  4. Child is to get own shoes and coat on and be ready to leave as instructed.
  5. You will give it a go for 4 weeks / rest of term and then let her know if it works or it's a complete pain.

Still don't understand why she doesn't use school breakfast club, or is there not one? You could cash in if not and set your own up!

suzikettles · 21/02/2012 16:58

Our breakfast club is 50p a day as well.

Maybe the breakfast club at your school for older children is £2.50 and that's where she got that figure from.

I'd do it for nothing tbh. I'd not be running about tidying the house or getting the children up earlier though. Her dc could sit on the sofa watching cartoons for half an hour and you could go about your usual routine.

But, it sounds like you just don't want to do it so fgs just say no. I don't see how an extra £2.50 is going to suddenly make it seem like an attractive prospect to you.

fuzzPigwickPapers · 21/02/2012 17:05

Our breakfast club is £4 for an hour.

feeling sick yet fuzz?

CrispsForBreakfast · 21/02/2012 17:10

I would say all that Destination has said but also add.

_ if your child will not be attending school due to sickness etc you will ring her ASAP and let her know she can't drop her child off that morning (and you won't be paid)

_ you will review the situation term by term and let her know if there are any problems

_ if the kids don't get on and it's causing problems for your child the arrangement stops

and a little note...put that £7.50 / £10 away every week and let it build up...otherwise it will go in your back pocket and get spent on bread and milk etc.

ChasingSquirrels · 21/02/2012 17:17

I just wouldn't do it.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 21/02/2012 17:26

I love this thread. Ha. I'm forwarding it to D.Cameron so he can see the big society not in action.

It doesn't sound as if your really keen OP, just be straight with this mother and tell her you'd rather not.

MidnightWorry · 21/02/2012 17:27

thank you all, i think il text her later this eve and say i am happy to do it but would want 10.00

part of me wants to do it for free, but then i do alot of things for free and i need to start getting realistic. i wouldnt charge is she was my friend and thats why shes offered the cash as she knows its nto a favour.
i text her and said il do tomorrow but will talk to dp tonight if we can keep doing it,she just text and said she hopes its going to be permenant and a smiley.

looks now like its on going long term. im happier now to ask for that bit more.

Sorry Midnight Blush, no offense meant.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 21/02/2012 17:30

Eaudelapoisson, there was no need for that comment about the inland revenue. Are you an arse in real life because you certainly come across as an enormous arse online!

MidnightWorry · 21/02/2012 17:30

hmm.

cameron would hate me, he makes both my bloody feet itch. (best line ever, when said in dragon voice)

SORRY Midnight! I had no idea you had never spoken to her or made eye contact before. That puts a completely different spin on things. Sorry!

MidnightWorry · 21/02/2012 18:06

FWIW I think you've done absolutely the right thing. :) Also, what you ask for money wise should be a multiple of three, just in case she decides to ask for 4 mornings or something....

I can't imagine asking a mum I didn't even know. It seems quite rude to assume you would do it (even with payment) just because you live opposite the school.

SnapSnafu · 21/02/2012 18:16

Slightly different take here than most posters, I think, and I'm not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but....

why not ask her to give you no money, and that you'll do it as a favour, and see how it goes. Then, you're not obliged to her. And you're helping her.

I don't see why the house has to be tidier, or your family any readier than usual? Mum won't see it, and kids don't usually care, and if they do then so what?

Or don't do it.

MidnightWorry · 21/02/2012 18:35

i thought of that snap, but i know id end up doing it for nothing and i dont know her enough to say yes to 3 times a week for good.

i always worry about the state of my house. its not awful but i could much better

OP posts:
JasperJohns · 21/02/2012 18:48

Hmm - I'd either do it for free as a helping hand

or

if I thought it was going to be a pita for some reason, I'd say no. But I'm rubbish at saying no!

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 21/02/2012 18:56

50p a day breakfast club? Flipping Nora! I'm a cm and charge £5 per morning per child from 7:30-8:45 inc breakfast and school drop off.

If you want the extra £40 a month then do it but I wouldn't be changing any current routine.
