MildlyNarkyPuffin and yet you are here too, and seem to think you are an expert in a religion you don't believe in??

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 21/02/2012 00:55

When did I say I was an expert?

ComposHat · 21/02/2012 01:01

and yet you are here too, and seem to think you are an expert in a religion you don't believe in??

My friend has a PhD in Arthurian myths and legends, he knows a great deal about them, but doesn't believe them to be true.

Many great philosophers/theologians don't believe in God, they are still extremely knowledgeable about religion, more so in fact as they can see the Bible as the product of human influence, rather than 'the word of God.'

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/02/2012 01:09

In your post at 23:33 you said:
"When religious people start apologizing to me, I'll mind my language a bit more".

Well I go to church, so I suppose that makes me religious, but I do not consider that I have anything to apologise to you for. As for blasphemy, I couldn't give a toss.

However I am very uncomfortable with the notion that I or anyone else is responsible for anything other than their own actions. In the past assigning collective responsibility has been a tool for creating division, stirring up hatred and making the process of dehumanization easier.

People have committed atrocities. People continue to do so. People will give reasons of religion, nationality, ethnicity or idealism to excuse violence and convince others to do the same. Atrocities aren't a religious thing, they are a people thing. Some people are really shitty, that doesn't mean that all people are really shitty.

AngryBeaver · 21/02/2012 03:30

I sometimes say "Christ on a bike" ...the imagery amuses me.

ScarlettCrossbones · 21/02/2012 08:16

The thing is, you Christians think that the rest of the world are deluded benighted infidels who will automatically go to hell unless we repent and suddenly conjure up a large dollop of faith from somewhere.

We offend you with our very presence, and denial of your God, so why on earth should a few choice words out of our mouths make it any worse? Surely our lack of belief is the real problem for you? So why are you zero-ing in on such a tiny part of our - as you see it - delusion?

takingiteasy · 21/02/2012 08:19

My mum says 'Jumping Jahosafits' I'm guessing that's 'biblical'?

AnyFucker · 21/02/2012 09:24

passive-aggressive patronizing versus the odd "christ" and "omg"

hmm, tough choice

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 09:28

"When religious people start apologizing to me, I'll mind my language a bit more".

OK, let's go for that then. What would you like me to apologise to you for today? Please bear in mind though, that I'm not personally responsible for everything every Christian or church has ever done.

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 09:30

"It has been suggested I am being offensive to take the Lords name in vain. I have responded that those who follow the lord have done far worse things, so if anyone should be offended it is me at their actions."

Right, tell me what I've done to you and I will apologise.

I use these words with regularity.

So does my Irish Catholic DH and FIL so I figure I have a free pass to indulge with gay abandon.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 21/02/2012 09:44

They're the only ones likely to be offended, BTW, since everyone else I know is a wicked heathen, walking the earth without God in their soul.

sozzledchops · 21/02/2012 09:45

I think if you are a member of the club or have been (whether voluntary or not) then you can use the words if you want to. And many of us who do seem to be from an Irish catholic background, strangely and probably don't intend any offence at all.

bejeezus · 21/02/2012 09:47

OK, let's go for that then. What would you like me to apologise to you for today? Please bear in mind though, that I'm not personally responsible for everything every Christian or church has ever done

this is interesting i think> And of course you are only responsible for your own actions. But dont you have any moral issue with supporting an institution which has caused so much harm and damage?

Spero · 21/02/2012 09:52

Thank you bejeezus. That is what I have been trying to say, but not so economically as you.

Popcorn and Dione, you personally have done nothing to offend me, other than getting a bit pompous and arsey on an anonymous forum.

But I forgive you.

Religions as a whole however have done heaps to make me feel angry, sick and disgusted with humanity. So if you are a flag waver for one of those institutions can't you understand why I think you must be a little bit tainted by it all?

PeppyNephrine · 21/02/2012 09:59

You can't have it both ways..you want a judeo-christian society, fine, but that means that these words are entirely normal to be used in that way.
Completely normal in my country, by religious and non-religious alike.

And if you don't like it, tough bollocks. Theres a lot thats offensive about the christian hold on society but you don't hear the rest of whining about it.

YouCantTeuchThis · 21/02/2012 10:07

I like to say "for the love of Allah" now and again, in between terms such as those mentioned above.

How'd ye like them apples, hmm?

Serendipity30 · 21/02/2012 10:12

Spero clearly did not sleep last night as she was thinking about this topic. DAY 2

AnyFucker I knew it would not be long before you turned up on this thread.

Youcanteuchthis I like to say "for the love of Allah" now and again and when you say this is it in public, or in your house in a whisper

OP posts:
LadyClariceCannockMonty · 21/02/2012 10:22

I like ComposHat's point about 'old, hard Christians' from Mon 20-Feb-12 23:32:27.

And I like saying 'Jesus H Christ' and 'Christ on a bike'. They're very satisfying to say, while being less 'strong' swearwords/phrases than fuck, cunt etc.

Come to think of it, perhaps the 'H' in 'Jesus H Christ' stands for 'Hard'?

YouCantTeuchThis · 21/02/2012 10:27

You do realise that, by getting offended, you are actually reinforcing the impact of certain words as 'swearing' by their very nature. If they were not tabboo or offensive, they would not 'work'.

And, I say 'for the love of Allah' in the same way that I use other sweary-words (and that is not "whispered" in my house! Who does that??!!)

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 21/02/2012 10:28

I realise the thread has moved on a bit and that people are getting into far deeper conversations but anyhoo:

I really, really hate 'Oh my God...AH!'

If you watch any channel showing repeats of Changing rooms, 60 min makeover, garden force or any other makeover show, you will hear someone saying 'OH My GOD' roughly every five minutes.

And its very annoying. I suspect it would annoy even the most solid of atheists. Because its bloody annoying.

Please carry on with your important arguing. I have made my point and will leave you.....
