Do those that say you shouldn't take the Lord's name in vain also refrain from saying 'Oh Sugar'? Or are you allowed to pick and choose Lords?

woollyideas · 21/02/2012 21:51

Dione No. I think she's expressed an opinion. I do think one person on here has been spectacularly rude and dismissive and it's not Spero. Again, that's just an opinion...

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/02/2012 22:16

Spero expressed a number of opinions. The one that attracted my interest was about an apology. Following on from that we entered into a discussion, as is customary on discussion forums.

Harecare · 21/02/2012 22:32

Blasphemy = do not take the lords name in vain e.g. say or do something and then say that is what God would want, like holy war or people not being allowed contraceptives to prevent AIDS.

Saying "Christ" or "God" is an exclamation or an appeal for help. It won't be answered e.g. "Oh Christ, I've spilt the milk". That is not blasphemy, but an appeal for help that won't come.

So technically OP YABU as no blasphemy has occurred when you wince.

I just can't tear myself away, despite a lovely evening watching Reginald D Hunter. If God had his voice, I would convert.

I have happily admitted that I dislike and often despise religious people.

However, I deny that makes me prejudiced.

The definition of prejudice is to judge without knowledge. I have a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience of religious people. My dislike is based on a plethora of empircal evidence; from what I see, what I read, the people I meet.

You may disagree with me. That is your right and privilege. But you will have to come up with something a little more convincing than thus far displayed to move me from my stated position.

I have simply gathered more evidence that religious people are pompous, patronising and squeal like piggies when challenged.

Spero · 22/02/2012 00:02

Sorry, that was quite rude. Maybe that half a cider during the interval was a bad idea. Time for bed again.

Maybe my long awaited conversion will happen during the night!

I did meet an old lady once who said Jesus appeared at end of her bed and said 'Doris! its not your time!' I like that He does house calls.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/02/2012 00:04

How the Hell did I miss Reginald D Hunter?
My not so secret crush,
Christ, God works in mysterious ways. Angry

Spero · 22/02/2012 00:12

He is so dreamy. Sigh. And I think he is lonely. He is ready to settle down with a special lady. Sigh.

Ok here is the deal. I will stop the dissing of the Christians et al in return for becoming Mrs R D Hunter. For lo! Was that not more rejoicing over the one sheep who strayed from the flock?

Come on god, you can make this happen, what with the omnipotence and all

Welcome back Spero.
Thank you for go ing me a great big belly laugh before bedtime.

You were saying Woolly?

Spero · 22/02/2012 00:17

Simples Maryz - step AWAY from the interval cider.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/02/2012 00:18

Ah but God will have to choose between me and you.

Sorry, that should read giving not go ing. Apologies.

Anyway on a more boring and academic note, I do not believe that prejudice stems from ignorance. Ignorance may feed it, but it is not the origin.

Spero · 22/02/2012 00:21

you can't win this one. I am emboldened by love and cider and quite possibly the Baby Jesus.

Spero · 22/02/2012 00:23

MaryZ!

Dione, don't blame me for the Wikipedia definition of prejudice. Thash whatvit said.

If ignorance is not the origin then what is? The devil?

Ah to sleep! Perchance to dream of Reg...

And PS disagreeing with someone is neither necessary nor sufficient to make them a bigot...

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/02/2012 10:00

Who's Reginald D Hunter? And is it as satisfying to use his name as a swearword as it is to say 'Jesus H Christ'?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/02/2012 10:01

PS Harecare, I like your view on whether saying 'Christ' as an expletive is actually blasphemy or not. And I think I agree with you.

springydaffs · 22/02/2012 11:26

ok then, let's put aside that God won't fall of his throne if his name is used 'in vain' ie blasphemy. He won't (he clearly hasn't), he can take it (imho). He could knock your head off for being rude but he won't, he's good. He could though Grin

imo it is rude to use blasphemic (is there such a word) words about the christian God as christians generally love the person who's name is being disrespectfully used. We wouldn't like it if eg our child's name was casually used as an expletive. Just putting forth forward a comparison. Emotive, no doubt, but as I love both God/Jesus and my children, it is an appropriate comparison imo. My children's names conjure up who they are and their names are therefore precious - I would be hurt and offended if their names were used in a flippant or derogatory way.

As per usual, people seem to mix up God and religion - they are poles apart aren't the same. I loathe religion, as it happens, precisely because it doesn't represent the one I love - doesn't come close most of the time, and certainly has done a lot, historically, that is truly vile... in God's Name. imo that is the definition of using God's name in vain ie putting God's name to something that has nothing to do with God, is the opposite of who s/he is eg religious terrorism, gay-bashing, Rhode island bashing etc. Jesus also loathed religion and was openly scorching and scathing about the religious leaders of his day because they used God's name to oppress, bully, control, force, intimidate, manipulate etc, not just practically but emotionally and psychologically. God doesn't do that shit, and loathes it, particularly and especially if done in his name.

As a christian, Spero, I can truly say I am sorry for what christians have done down the centuries in God's name. I am rightly ashamed of a lot (most?) of christian history ie the vile stuff. Most christians are.

I wince if people use God or Jesus' name as an expletive, for the reasons above. As far as I'm aware, not many people use the name of Mohammed, Allah, buddha etc, as an expletive, not just because in the west we have not learnt culturally to do so but because we know it would be deemed hurtful and offensive to those who sincerely believe in those deities if we did. Some want to be hurtful and cause offense. ok then.

Spero · 22/02/2012 11:30

who is Reg? Lady Clarice, I am afraid you may be going to hell.

I have just been sent to the wrong court after shelling out £6 for a taxi so have been trying out 'Reginald d Hunter!' as substitute expostulation.

It's not bad but I may have difficulty in explaining this after we marry.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/02/2012 11:34

Bit harsh, Spero. If you were a Christian I reckon you'd have been an eager volunteer for the Spanish Inquisition Grin.

Just Googled him. I do know him. I'm sure he'd love it if you used his name as an expletive once you were shacked up.
