Popcorn did respond to my comment; at 11:23:46

ScarlettCrossbones · 21/02/2012 12:45

Scarlet, I can honestly say that I have never given any thought to what will happen to you when you die.

But surely if I don't believe in God I'm going to hell? Isn't that a given?

Spero · 21/02/2012 12:45

For eg isn't it telling that what is getting kansas so upset is that people like me say Jesus H Christ every now and again? Apologies if she is out at the moment marching against paedophile priests, but I rather assumed that this thread was the measure of what she choses to find shocking.

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 12:46

Popcorn, you didn?t even acknowledge bejeezus? comment, let alone admit that this might be something that is worth contemplating apologising for.

Actually Technodad, if you see my comment of Tue 21-Feb-12 11:23:46, you'll see I did exactly that Confused

I will certainly apologise on behalf of the church for all it has done wrong, yes. I personally am sorry that the church has failed to live up to what it should. Many people are working hard within the church to eradicate these terrible things.

As for supporting the church, if you read my post above which you seem to have missed, you'll see why I continue to do so.

Just out of interest do you yourself apologise for anything done by anyone in any institution you've ever belonged to, whether a company you've worked for, or the UK (e.g. apologising for slavery)?

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 12:48

And there I completely agree with you :)

"And yes, people within religions are trying to change them from within - perhaps they would do well to shake off all deferentiality and be a bit more vocal so that outsiders realise? smile"

Technodad · 21/02/2012 12:51

DioneTheDiabolist

I am sure that people ARE trying to challenge the crimes and out-dated attitudes, but since many of the outdated issues are based upon an old book that defines what Christianity is, surely it won't be Christianity anymore if the institution is modernised. Or is this just a case of continually changing Christianity to match up with modern society to make it more attractive to people - in which case, you might as well go the full hog and become an atheist now rather than in 50 years when everyone grows up.

I do not financially support the religious organization where I worship. Through my taxes I do contribute financially to a country where the government is increasingly making life difficult for women and funds violence in other countries. I also challenge these policies. Is there a difference?

Well since Bush and Blair invaded Iraq because god told them to do it, it is probably identical. You are right, the entire nation has to apologise for the fact that we financially contribute to a nation that allows polititions to use religion as an excuse to invade another country.

woollyideas you did not need to comment on the thread and yet you have

bejeezus · 21/02/2012 12:53

i can see the comparison between belonging to the Church and the Uk/tax system/ being 'part of' a colonising nation. But the difference is a person is born into their nationality, whereas you hope a person makes an informed decision about supporting a religion

Serendipity30 · 21/02/2012 12:53

ScarlettCrossbones when have I mentioned that you are or are not going to hell. What are you talking about, I don't even know you and even if I did I would never say that to anyone, let alone think it.

OP posts:
bejeezus · 21/02/2012 12:54

i wouldn't work for a company which I believed compromised my moral values

Technodad · 21/02/2012 12:55

I don't have the choice as to whether I want to be born a UK citizen or not do I? And yes, I moved jobs before because of the direction a company was taking and the fact that it did not match up with my personal moral values.

woollyideas · 21/02/2012 12:55

No, I did not NEED to, and yet I have. It's called expressing an opinion. Didn't know you were the fucking thread police for Christ's sake.

You're making yourself look a bit daft now, trying to control who can and can't post. (Glad to be in the company of AnyFucker...)

Serendipity30 · 21/02/2012 12:55

Christians of today cannot apologise for wrong doings of the last 2000 years. That is like asking white people of today to apologise for the Slave trade.

Kansas, I refer you to my reply to Dione at 12:45:43. Isn't it a given??

Technodad · 21/02/2012 12:56

bejeezus - are you my twin sister? Smile

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/02/2012 12:56

Grimma they are vocal, very much so. The Papal envoy to Ireland was dispatched back to the Vatican by a Catholic and with the support of many of Ireland's Catholics.

Serendipity30 · 21/02/2012 12:57

woollyideas if you have an attitude you will get one back, you comments were rude, so you received a rude reply. Why all the indignation now.

OP posts:
woollyideas · 21/02/2012 12:57

Spero - I am liking your posts! Wink

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 12:57

Why should all the ordinary Christians who've never burned anyone at the stake etc. feel they should leave their church, just because some other people in the past did the wrong thing in the church's name? It's at least as much their community as anyone else's.

Serendipity30 · 21/02/2012 12:58

woollyideas I did start the thread, so don't let the door hit you on the way out.
