to think boxing is the most stupid thing ever

I've been hearing about those 2 boxers fighting in the press conference and how one has threatened to shoot the other as well as spitting in anothers face all day. Why do people want to watch 2 men put in a ring fighting each other anyway.

OP posts:

YABU
Boxing is a great way to teach respect and discipline. DP is a former boxer who does not go round threatening to shoot people. He doesn't spit either and rarely swears.
It's just that some boxers are twats. You get them in all sports I think.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/02/2012 23:32

Yanbu

It's 2012 - any 'sport' which involves punching someone for money is barbaric and out of place in modern society.

TheSinglePringle · 19/02/2012 23:40

I like to watch boxing. It's not the sport that's stupid its them two boxers who are. Not all boxers behave that way

WorraLiberty · 19/02/2012 23:43

If I were you OP, I would look at the extensive video footage on youtube

You'll see that what you've been hearing about all day and the actual sport of boxing aren't even remotely linked.

One was a pathetic brawl

The other is a disciplined sport.

MaisyMooCow · 19/02/2012 23:47

I was taken along to a fight some years ago. Some big name in boxing, can't remember his name (shows how interested I was). It was awful, barbaric. I'd never go again. I hate the sport, in fact I wouldn't even class it as a 'sport'. Although the boxers may seem 'trained' the barbaric chants from the crowd leave a lot to be desired.

IDoNotLIKEFun · 20/02/2012 00:01

Have just remembered this and it makes me laugh. It is about boxing and barbaric chants.

My BF stayed at my parents house when I was 17 and my parents were out for the evening. We had some quality time, then he went back to his sleeping bag in front of the television in the living room.

Unfortunately, my Dad brought a few mates back to watch the Tyson / Bruno match so he was very alarmed when he woke up to see a circle of men surrounding him shouting, "'it 'im! 'IT 'IM! GO ON SON 'IT 'IM 'ARDER!"

Poor chap!

anode · 20/02/2012 00:22

YANBU most people are horrified if they saw a fist fight in the street but in boxing people pay money to watch two men fight each other and openly will them on to hurt their opponent.

WorraLiberty · 20/02/2012 00:27

And two women also

anode · 20/02/2012 00:36

Worra- You're right I wasn't trying to make a gender point

mayorquimby · 20/02/2012 00:42

"YANBU most people are horrified if they saw a fist fight in the street"

Probably be a bit weirded out if I saw people throwing spears down the high street or if somebody started dishing out rugby tackles too, that's the beauty of context.

YABU boxing is a fine strength of speed, stamina, strength, physical toughness and mental toughness. Boxers are some of the finest athletes of any sport. No-one I have seen has done anything but condemn Chisoras actions over the weekend.

Justwant2leaveit · 20/02/2012 00:55

I hate boxing anyway, what a stupid way for men to behave

Animation · 20/02/2012 07:30

The aim of the sport is to keep hitting someone's head until they pass out.

That's stupid to me.

WhereMyMilk · 20/02/2012 07:59

Agree with Animation. I can not think of boxing as a sport when the whole aim of it is to hit someone else enough times in the head so they have enough brain trauma to pass out. Excellent.Hmm

Shakirasma · 20/02/2012 08:09

So do those who think it barbaric also think the same of martial arts?

CaveMum · 20/02/2012 08:15

In my opinion the 2 boxers involved should be given lengthy bans fron the sport to demonstrate that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

I work in another sport that comes under fire from some people who don't understand how heavily regulated it is, horse racing, so I can understand the frustration of some posters at seeing their sport attacked over the actions of two idiots.

There should be scope for the governing body to punish any behaviour that could bring the sport into disrepute, even if it happens outside if the sporting arena.

PopcornBiscuit · 20/02/2012 08:24

YANBU

MiseryBusiness · 20/02/2012 08:25

My Husband is on his works Boxing team.

What happened at the weekend isnt a true reflexion of Boxing as a sport.

MiseryBusiness · 20/02/2012 08:28

Chisora had 30K deducted from his purse for slapping Vitali Klitschko before the fight but I think he should be banned for his behaviour over the weekend. He was awful to both Klitschko Brothers and his press conference fight with David Haye was disgusting!

Some of the things he said were just awful!

charleneanna · 20/02/2012 08:29

boxing is for thugs and bullies because no normal caring person would repeatedly puch someone in the face and head until th other person was unable to stand up to just punch someone over and over again until they are bleeding is not th action of a sane person

MiseryBusiness · 20/02/2012 08:32

My DH is quite sane and is a very caring and loving person. Grin

charleneanna · 20/02/2012 08:46

would you still think it was a good sport if your dh died of a brain injury because his opponent thought it was great fun punching him in the head ovr and over again

MiseryBusiness · 20/02/2012 08:52

He doesnt bare knuckle fight in a car park somewhere...

Anyway, DH only fights ammature. They all wear head gear and there are strict rules etc.

Even still, if his opponent was to hurt him badly I dont think that would change the fact my DH is a loving and caring person Grin

charleneanna · 20/02/2012 08:56

whatever bosing is still for brainless thugs and they deserve all they get when there aim is to hurt others they are no better than the scumbags on the street that beat innocent people up
