to think boxing is the most stupid thing ever

I've been hearing about those 2 boxers fighting in the press conference and how one has threatened to shoot the other as well as spitting in anothers face all day. Why do people want to watch 2 men put in a ring fighting each other anyway.

There was a problem with those that ran the boxing world (i cannot speak now, my family used to have boxing ties, but don't any more).

Boxers have never recieved a fair share of the money made, i think some of the early problems came from a strong connection to the criminal world. Which i know of because i had family that was involved in pre 1960's.

But i second what boxing has done for many young lads, including those not fron the UK.

Male members of my family were involved with world wide illegal fighting via being in the Merchant Navy, as a past time and to earn extra money, if boxing had of ben banned, it would have just gone underground and the death rate would have risen.

CaveMum · 20/02/2012 15:22

I would have thought that the British regulators have links to other governing bodies around the world.
Surely if one body hand out a ban/forbid a license the others would reciprocate.

Certainly that is how it works for jockeys: a ban in one country = a ban in all countries.

DoodleAlley · 20/02/2012 15:36

Has anyone pointed out that aggression in sports isn't limited to boxing? Im always shocked at the numbers of police required everytime there's a football match in my city.

mojitomania · 20/02/2012 15:46

I personally think it's barbaric and can't watch it.

A lot of boxing clubs are sprining up in the schools around here now though. I think the esos is it's disciplined and controlledand what with the violence between kids these days better to knock 7 shades of shite out of someone in the ring rather than on the streets!

However, I don't class this as anything like martial arts.

SamuelWestsMistress · 20/02/2012 15:49

YANBU I don't like it much. It doesn't sit right with me that with all the crap about bullying and exposing violence to young kids and all the other yada yada, that boxing is still accepted. Beating the shit out of another person in the name of sport seems odd.

But then again it produces obscene amounts of money for the people involved so who cares?

mayorquimby · 20/02/2012 15:51

boxing is so disjointed wrt governing bodies that I doubt they would follow suit. In America you'll even get different boards within the country but from different states going against each other when it comes to issuing licenses

GreatGretzky · 20/02/2012 15:56

YABU. 99% of boxers don't go out starting fights outside the ring!

GreatGretzky · 20/02/2012 15:58

Don't go around starting fights*
Sorry, changed what I was typing halfway through!

OTheHugeManatee · 20/02/2012 16:17

The 'barbaric' thing is interesting, as it comes down to what your basic beliefs are about human nature.

If you believe that humans can and should be completely rational, non-aggressive, collaborative-not-competitive, non-violent beings then you are likely to see combat sports as an embarrassing hangover from our more primitive past and as something to be got rid of.

If you believe that a certain amount of aggression and violence is as inherent in human beings as the capacity and inclination to love or create or think, then you are likely to think there is room in human civilisation for combat sports such as boxing.

Personally I believe the latter, and would rather see violence and aggression relatively controlled and ritualised in a cultural context than erupting unpredictably on the streets at pub closing time.

you ovisouly no nothing about the sport how is it not skillful, so floyd mayhweater is not skillful? ohh he's just undefeated for no apparent reason i guess 45-0 are you dumb?

Pumpkinpositive · 26/02/2014 08:30

Was there a particular reason you revived this thread?

boxing is well stupid

shewhowines · 26/02/2014 08:35

Yup I agree. Why would you want to watch people hurting themselves?
It's also odd to me, that people watch motor racing. Most of them look forward to the "exciting" crashes.

meganorks · 26/02/2014 09:04

YANBU. I don't care so much about the pathetic pre match goading. But find boxing in general just barbaric and discusting. I don't really get why men or women would want to partake or watch.

zippey · 26/02/2014 10:54

There's a lot of people who can't understand why people go on mumsnet. There's also a lot of goadiness on here, but it's still a great site I would say.

Each to their own. Boxing, motor sports and UFC/cage fighting are disciplined sports in their own rights.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 26/02/2014 10:59
