to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Tapel im on at roughly about 2.16 into the broadcast and i used the name Jenny.

Nilgiri · 20/02/2012 15:40

Good blog post from someone who used to manage real, voluntary work experience of value to the worker - and then came across the punitive Flexible New Deal scheme.

carernotasaint · 20/02/2012 15:49

That blog post is proof beyond all doubt that the supermarkets/companies are only interested when there is something in it for them financially.

Devora · 20/02/2012 16:01

That quote from Margaret of London is actually hilarious, a kind of Swiftian spoof. She's not serious, surely? [retaining hope in human nature emoticon]

Nilgiri · 20/02/2012 16:02

And of course, this whole discussion is cast in terms of "people getting money from the Govt".

Excuse me. Last time I checked, contributory JSA and ESA/IB are insurance payouts after years of paying National Insurance premiums.

Or are people who claim on car insurance now expected to mow the CEO's lawn to "earn" their payout?

KalSkirata · 20/02/2012 16:10

That comment woolley Shock

KalSkirata · 20/02/2012 16:29

my jaw is still dropped Shock

Agincourt · 20/02/2012 16:31

There are some horrible comments on many articles on the daily mail website. There was a comment last week about carers of severely disabled children should find it easier to work because their children go to special schools Err yes, the least likely kind of school to have after school care Hmm Twats

KalSkirata · 20/02/2012 16:52

they forget that not only is there no afterschool care/clubs/childminders for disabled children, many severely disabled kids are in mainstream.

carernotasaint · 20/02/2012 16:57

Check this out the sheer audacity of Argos.

www.boycottworkfare.org/

Nilgiri · 20/02/2012 18:14

Argos: "Christmas is our busiest time of year and we are pleased to provide the opportunity for work experience during this time." ShockShockShock

So that's it. An outright admission that they are using Work Experience when they most need real actual work done.

FWIW, I have supervised genuine voluntary work experience (students doing two weeks in an office as part of a secretarial course) and we didn't like having them at busy times. Because we didn't have time to look after them properly.

Shugochara · 20/02/2012 18:24

It gets ever more outrageous, to be honest. Grayling's response is pathetic and it doesn't surprise me that the likes of Argos and Tesco are brazen enough to carry on when govenrment ministers are prepared to say anything to continue with their nasty scheme. Work experience my arse.

MoreBeta · 20/02/2012 19:01

Shops are clearly using the 'work experience programme' to get workers to stack shelves. This is a job they would normally have to pay someone to do. However, by using people on this 'work experience programme' they get the work done for free.

That is all I need to know.

clicarhel · 20/02/2012 19:56

OK, this is going to sound harsh but it is not meant in a bad way so please, please do not think that it is. I have sympathy for those who cannot-or too ill -to find a job but, in a way, the unemployed people here who are already on this scheme are not really relevant here about the point I wish to make.

The point is a very, very simple one. It is this taken to its logical conclusion, EVERYBODY will end up working for dole.

Think about it: Person loses job, ends up on workfare, Another person loses job, tries hard to find one, but, of course, nobody who can get free workers is going to actually pay, so that person ends up on workfare, too... The cycle goes on.

I don't want to hear any 'pulled myself up by my bootstraps' stuff, either. I salute any person who is a success, however, if there are no paying menial jobs for you to get on the ladder, you never will pull yourself up it!
The middle classes will also suffer-where will little Johnny find a saturday job now?

Only the very rich will survive.

I don't care if you think the unemployed should starve, that is your view and I disagree with it entirely- because people who are starving turn to crime and, believe me, you won't sleep well in your beds when this happens- however, anybody who supports this workfare scheme is thick as pig mess. Truly, truly thick.

clicarhel · 20/02/2012 20:00

Any country that forgets that 'A fair day's work deserves a fair day's pay' is fucked. Truly fucked.

minimathsmouse · 20/02/2012 20:13

"There are four main income replacement benefits. Jobseeker?s Allowance is an active benefit for
people who are working fewer than 16 hours per week and are looking for work."
DWP "The Work Programme"

Does this mean that most of Tesco's employees are actually unemployed?

Tesco offers fixed contracts for 4-6hrs with overtime. Once the work slaves take the overtime most of the existing staff could claim to be unemployed under existing legislation.

NunOnTheRun · 20/02/2012 20:23

Woollyideas - I never knew such thick, bigoted people existed. Take babies away from disabled people and sell them... 'Margaret of London' you are thicker than the thickest pig shit and have just as much empathy

I'm just waiting for the day that someone suggests contraception implants or sterilisation Angry
Hope Margaret of London never loses her job, health or sparkling personality..

minimathsmouse · 20/02/2012 21:31

Has anyone looked at this www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/wp-pg-chapter-6.pdf

If you click link, scroll down to pg 5 there is a link for the form WP08 that has to be filled in for someone to be sanctioned.

If you open up the form in XL and click examples. This gives the jobsworths examples of reasons why someone could be sanctioned to lose benefit payments.

Note that for both examples where the claimant is male, the sanctions are imposed for non-compliance in seeking work.

In the 2nd example the woman could be sanctioned and have her benefit stopped because of appearance.Angry

I don't mean to be picky but Grayling and the DWP appear to be breaking every known rule in terms of equality and morality.

carernotasaint · 20/02/2012 22:19

When my DH and i were signing on in the late 1990s they made me sign a form saying i would consider part time work.
They didnt make mu DH sign any such form.
Because they obviously thought that being the little woman i only needed pin money!
Mini thats fucking disgusting what youve found there.
So they are bloody mysogynists as well as inhumane.

KalSkirata · 20/02/2012 22:26

Its like feudalism isnt it. Serfs to scared to disobey or they will lose food and housing.

carernotasaint · 20/02/2012 23:24

the charity Mind have pulled out now but they admit they are not sure if any workfarers are still working in any of their shops but they say they are trying to find out and will end any coerced placements if they find any.
Im still waiting to hear that the British Heart Foundation have pulled out.
Apparently Carillion are also using workfare. I cant boycott them as its my HA who has the contract with them.

minimathsmouse · 20/02/2012 23:25

Have posted this into feminism too. At least more people will be aware of how vile these Tory Toffs are.

carernotasaint · 20/02/2012 23:26

Oh well done mini i didnt think of that Will stick my post in there too.

minimathsmouse · 20/02/2012 23:29

As of this morning the local cancer research shop had Workfarer's. I popped in to see a friend who "volunteers" she is now training several others.

Notthefullshilling · 20/02/2012 23:33

So the following article outlines how people with impairment are going to be dealt with differently under the workfare scheme. The idea is that those found fit enough to work but who need support (The wrag) group can be expected to begin a period of training and work experience with no promise or even a suggestion that paid employment will result, for an indefinite time. This is unlike those of JSA who will only be compelled to go on these "placements" for a maximum of 8 weeks. The three groups who will be most at risk from this placement with out end will be those with learning disabilities, those with mental health problems, and lastly those with visual impairments.

This proposal has already been voted on and unless the whole bill is junked by parliament will come in to force. What do people think
