AIBU not to flush the loo when I go for a wee in the middle of the night?

As it says really. I don't - because it's just a wee, and I don't watch the noise of the flush to wake everyone up.

However, we've recently had a new bathroom suite. DH says that leaving it will damage the loo since urine is corrosive and will lead to brown staining. I said I thought the staining (which we don't have, for the avoidance of doubt!) was limescale etc not wee damage and I think surely he's talking rubbish - it's a bit of wee hitting the water in there anyway for at most what, about six hours? (I don't pee neat ammonia FTAOD.)

if it's yellow let it mellow
if it's brown flush it down :)

YANBU! Your DH is talking out of his bottom!

losttheflickumdickumagain · 16/02/2012 13:56

I don't flush during the night as I don't want to wake the dc's. It's never even slightly discoloured our toilets. And I am usually a bit OCD with cleaning.

milkysmum · 16/02/2012 13:58

would never flush if just a wee in the night- and would murder anyone in our house that did as i'm a light sleeper with a new baby!!! I do not have a stianed loo :o

Scholes34 · 16/02/2012 13:58

In Bermuda, where there's no fresh water, other than that which is imported or caught on the roof, no-one flushes unless absolutely necessary. Ask Mr Pooter to take you to Bermuda on holiday to see how the system works there and to check out their toilets.

BackforGood · 16/02/2012 14:00

You are right.
dh is wrong.

sausagesandmarmelade · 16/02/2012 14:04

He's just being precious about his new bathroom suite...

Give it 6 months

Nux · 16/02/2012 14:05

you're right

MidnightWorry · 16/02/2012 14:07

i dont flush the loo after ive wee`d every time. it saves water and it dousnt smell so why not

ChunkyPickle · 16/02/2012 14:08

You're right, he's wrong..

Nothing worse than when DP gets up, stumbles sleepy out of the room, turns on the light (and so the fan) pees, flushes, clicks the light off again then stumbles back into the room kicking the bed on the way (since he's now blinded by the bright bathroom light)...

I wander out, pee, and back again, no flush, in the dark, minimum fuss.

nickelDorritt · 16/02/2012 14:09

it's not corrosive! the reason it stains is because the colour dies the limescale.
wash you bog with a limescale removing cleaner and it's fine.

MrsCarriePooter · 16/02/2012 14:09

MidnightWorry - what an appropriate name you have (are you my DH?)

We had a new bathroom suite last year. It is not stained and anyone who flushes at night gets yelled at!

MamaLazarou · 16/02/2012 14:28

No way, man. Yellow is mellow, brown goes down, as someone already said.

SausageSmuggler · 16/02/2012 14:36

Nah we don't flush during the night either because we don't want to disturb each other and DC. We've not had problems with staining either but maybe tell your DH that if it bothers him that much he could chuck bleach down the loo every morning just in case. Amazingly when I suggest DH sorts something out if it's bothering him he doesn't whinge about it anymore.

mynewpassion · 16/02/2012 14:39

Flush the toilet. Its gross and he probably doesn't want to see it as one of the first things in the mornings.

LineRunner · 16/02/2012 14:42

It's not gross.

suzikettles · 16/02/2012 14:48

It's not corrosive, but when I was a student I worked abroad one summer when my male flatmates were staying in the city.

When I got back after 3 months the toilet had a thick crust of limescale round the rim. I was v surprised as we live in a soft water area and mentioned to my mum that I'd had to scrub it off with limescale remover and wasn't that weird.

And then I discovered that it wasn't limescale but 3 months of wee build up. Envy Envy Envy.

However, if (unlike my flatmates) you clean your toilet more than once every 3 months you'll be fine.

FedUpOfTheBunfightsSeaCow · 16/02/2012 14:48

Firs thing in the morning wee smells v bad as it's much stronger so I wouldn't leave that.

GavisconJunkie · 16/02/2012 14:57

Betty beat me too it! We never flush at night, loo is as clean as a (weey) whistle!

YANBU

blondie80 · 16/02/2012 15:03

I flush, dh on the other hand use to let it mellow incase he woke dc. I hated it, told him he must flush. Dc need to be use to noise at night. They have never woken to the toilet flushing.

Marymaryalittlecontrary · 16/02/2012 15:08

As someone who doesn't have children I think, 'Ewww, flush the toilet you manky lot!' But if I ever have children I'm guessing my feelings might change as I won't want to wake them I suppose.

BarmyBiscuit · 16/02/2012 15:15

We don't flush as my son's room is next to ours and I don't want to wake him as he will then crawl into my bed and take over. If you clean the toilet regularly then it isn't a problem

AlbertoFrog · 16/02/2012 15:15

Your DH is taking the piss Grin

YANBU. He is.

GoingForGoalWeight · 16/02/2012 15:16

YANBU or you could throw a jug of water on top of it, if you feel like it. Personally, I'd leave it.

Lambzig · 16/02/2012 15:21

gosh we rarely flush for wee, just for poo. our loo is ten years old and not stained. looking at putting grey water system in.

I guess its because we both work in the environment industry and have seen the data on water poverty in the next decade.
