To ask our nanny to not take the children to Greggs for lunch once a week?

Dh thinks I'm being precious, the first time it happened I thought "oh we'll, it's just once, it's a treat" (apparently they LOVED it - nanny's capitals, not mine) but she went again today, the third week in a row. The other meal they had today was beans on toast so not exactly bad but hardly the peak of nutrition heights.

Dcs are 2 and 4 btw.

You have every right to ask her to feed your kids the food you have chosen for them. You must have an amazingly healthy diet though if you have never ever eaten things like Greggs and KFC. Am impressed!

Shriekable · 14/02/2012 10:07

At least your nanny is getting them out and about, even if it is only to Greggs! My friend's now ex-childminder kept her DS cooped up indoors all day. And Greggs is great - I love the cheese & onion slices, the sausage rolls, triple choc muffins . . . custard slices . . . strawberry tarts . . . I could go on . . . and at least you know that the sausage rolls (or Sunderland dummy, as it's known around here) & pasties are cooked on the premises & haven't been sat around congealing for ages. Once a week is fine, a bit of lard will do them good!

If you don`t like it look after your kids yourself! You have a choice you know?!

silverfrog · 14/02/2012 11:01

I wouldn't like it, and would ask a nanny not to go every week.

fine as a treat, but imo, a treat is not a regular once-a-week occurrence. and if she is only with you for 3 days, and you are already pre-cooking (why? is cooking not part of her duties?) then I would be even more Hmm tbh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2012 11:59

if any other poster i would say this is a wind up - but i know of headfairy from childcare boards

also waves to silver frog

tbh you need to be blunt and just say you dont mind lunch out every other week or so, as she works 3 days but not to go to greggs

my ex ex mb hated maccy d's with a passion and had a right go at me the first time i took the kids there - but as i said to her she didnt tell me she didnt like maccy d's so how do i know

nannies are not mind readers Grin

but she was very happy for me to go and spend £30 at say zizi/pizza express etc

tbh i think its good for children to learn how to eat nicely and behave in public, so eating out often is a good idea

headfairy · 14/02/2012 16:24

Tolk13n (or whatever the fuck your name is) - do you mean the choice between being homeless or going to work? Fuck off back to the stone ages, there's a love.

"If you don`t like it look after your kids yourself! You have a choice you know?!" (sent from my iRock)

errr whats all that about FFS ? Biscuit!!

headfairy · 14/02/2012 16:53

hiphop I know, I know since when did a conversation about children's diets become some kind of retrograde judgement as to whether parents should work (I'm being generous saying parents, because I'm sure tolk13n wouldnt say the same thing to my dh). Obviously because we're both working (regardless of whether its economically necessary for us to both work) we deserve to have our children fed crap.

MrsBethel · 14/02/2012 16:54

headfairy, it's doing no harm and it makes them happy.

I think the most reasonable thing for you to do is to let it go.

When things rankle with us, its not always easy to let them go. But being able to choose to do so is very powerful, and choosing to do so is pretty much a prerequiste for a happy life.

mrsjay · 14/02/2012 16:58

If she had taken them for pizza and not greggs would that be better did they have fruitshoots Grin TBH i wouldnt worry once a week but if its really bothering you maybe make lunch for them so they dont resort to poison Greggs

headfairy · 14/02/2012 17:13

MrsJ No fruit shoots were involved Grin

there's always a selection of homemade stuff in the freezer that takes minutes to warm up. I don't think it was a case of there being nothing in the house to eat.

MrsB I'm going to take a fairly relaxed attitude but I might ask her to take them no more than fortnightly.

Grin at me being super healthy because I've never bought anything from Greggs or KFC... You wouldn't say that if you could see me!

GoingForGoalWeight · 14/02/2012 17:16

They're your children, your decision! Let it go but now you have the opportunity to make it very clear what the rules are, with regards to what the children eat. If she doesn't comply, there are plenty of suitable jobless out there, hpe it doesn;t come to that though. Good luck :)

headfairy · 14/02/2012 17:20

Oh going I don't think it would ever come to that... It's not malicious what she's doing, just not my preference to do it every week.

I'll have a chat with her on Thursday, as blondes says, she's not a mind reader.

Weasleyismyking · 14/02/2012 17:36

i saw a guy walking out of greggs with a pasty and a soft white roll, he then put the pasty in the roll and had a pasty sandwich! Shock
i didn't know whether to be impressed or ill Grin

mrsjay · 14/02/2012 17:36

Thinking about it and being serious you are employing her to look after your children every day so I dont think you are being precious in wanting them eat something you approve of , so maybe say to her to cut down to once a month maybe as I dont think Pizza slice will do them much harm , but you dont want them going to a Bakers every week ,

Driftwood999 · 14/02/2012 17:37

OP - nothing wrong with the ocassional sausage roll. I wonder at your high expectation of child carers being at home chefs, with the kinder. In my opinion she? is doing you a favour taking them out of the house and socialising them.

I may well have to try it one day (especially the now improved version with HP), but I certainly won't be walking out in full view of everyone. I'll be hiding down a side-alley [dirty]

ItWasABoojum · 14/02/2012 18:04

Weasley - didn't you see that episode of Supersize Vs Superskinny where the guy's breakfast was 2 Greggs sausage rolls on white baps with cheese and mayo? I wanted to be grossed out but I was just intrigued and a little jealous. I'm Scottish, it's in my genes

Weasleyismyking · 14/02/2012 18:08

IWAB I can't watch that show because it makes me feel sick when they put all the food together down the tube thing at the start
putting other ingredients in the sandwich mean taking it home, my steakbake's never made it home...

seb1 · 14/02/2012 18:11

OP, are you just trying to get on The Wright Stuff tomorrow morning?? Grin

JuliaScurr · 14/02/2012 18:14

This is a serious question
Why can't they go to a baker's once a week?

G1nger · 14/02/2012 18:23

How many calories are these Jaffa cake doughnuts?

RitaMorgan · 14/02/2012 18:41

They're your children, and she's your employee, so it's up to you what she feeds them.

But, I personally don't see the problem. If she's Polish then she might not be aware that Greggs isn't just a bakery, it's poisonous to middle class children.

Unless you have told her what you do and don't want your children to eat, then how is she to know?
