thinking that schools really should TRY to put the best work up on display

I know that for some best is still pretty poor, but as an outsider visiting a school it looks terrible to have semi illiterate work up on display. I was in a sec school today where almost NONE of the work was correct.

it's a condunrum - celebrate indivdual achievement (not necessarily knowing that the kids might have learning issues and therefore presuming the school has low standards) OR to insist all work up is the very best - therefor acting as a good role model for other kids.

Yours wouldn't get up on the wall then Grin

Don't be daft OP.

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:26

One letter to a potential employer was so poor, huge chunks of it made no sense at all." I am full exocit."

So people with SN or learning difficulties shouldn't have work up even if they worked really really hard because it is offensive to your eyes?

Nice

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:26

IN a whole display there was ONE letter that was in normal language.
This is a school with a VERY low level of E2L

So only the work of the highest achievers can be displayed? Lovely.

Best in the opinion of whom. Some work on display may very well be the absolute best that the particular child has produced. Therefore, it is 'the best'.

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:27

what i am saying is that as an an outsider unless you know this kid has learning issues ( or seemingly the whole school if you looked at the displays) you just think that the standards are low.

OP posts:
Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:28

yes but " the best" needs to be in context in assessment - so as a teacher or parent you would know that.
As an outsider you would presume that NO ONE can spell or write English.

Oh dear, saying a child must have special needs if they're not shit hot on writing might not go down well on MN.

You're wrong you know OP, they're children!

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 16:31

YABVU.

A classroom isn't there for the benefit of outsiders, it is there for the benefit of the students if that school.

I hate school displays that clearly only show the best work. As an outsider, it gives me the impression that they do not value all their students equally, that they probably have something to hide, and that they do not value improvement in their students work.

I actually find your attitude quite disgusting.

Nixea · 13/02/2012 16:31

But as an "outsider", why would it be any business of yours anyway?

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:31

There was NO balance whatsoever.
All the work might have been that kids best, but showed a poor overall standard.

OP posts:
hellhasnofury · 13/02/2012 16:31

It is opinions like yours that lower the already low self esteem of children like my son.

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:32

As an outsider because if i was touring the school, that was the judgement I would make.

OP posts:
aldiwhore · 13/02/2012 16:32

Maybe its for the kids themselves rather than to solely show off?

If a child has put a lot of effort in to some work, even if its not perfect, what a great way to boost their self esteem by putting it on the wall, what a great way to lose a child's interest by constantly telling them that anything less than perfect isn't good enough.

By all means showcase the best stuff, but display everything but the work that's not been done.

Why do you think that your opinion as an outsider is so much more important than the feelings of those children that did the work?

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:33

Of course put a range up - and i get that for some kids writing anything is an achievement.
But every single piece of work ( as i keep saying) was poor.

Wow, you're lovely. Have you thought about teaching as a career? You'd be great.

Whitebait · 13/02/2012 16:33

You need to wake up and smell the coffee - schools have to market themselves to visitors these days.
