thinking that schools really should TRY to put the best work up on display

I know that for some best is still pretty poor, but as an outsider visiting a school it looks terrible to have semi illiterate work up on display. I was in a sec school today where almost NONE of the work was correct.

it's a condunrum - celebrate indivdual achievement (not necessarily knowing that the kids might have learning issues and therefore presuming the school has low standards) OR to insist all work up is the very best - therefor acting as a good role model for other kids.

One letter to a potential employer was so poor, huge chunks of it made no sense at all." I am full exocit."

Yes but did you get the job anyway?

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 16:34

Maybe the school doesn't teach to a high standard, but that's not the fault of the children who all deserve to have their work recognised equally.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 13/02/2012 16:34

Did you deliberately set out to sound like a thick twat. ?

dandelionss · 13/02/2012 16:35

'As an outsider you would presume that NO ONE can spell or write English.'

..perhaps the school places more importance on thhe needs of their pupils than their image to outsiders.Imagine that!!

t0lk13n · 13/02/2012 16:35

It isnt the job of a teacher to complete displays! Go and and offer your services....Im sure the school would be so pleased for you to offer advice on displays!

Nixea · 13/02/2012 16:35

This is going to run and run isn't it.

OP: AIBU?
Every single person on the board: YES!

Why were you there?

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 16:36

Schools should concentrate on the well being of the children more than they should ever concentrate on marketing.

They are schools ffs, that's the point!

TuftyFinch · 13/02/2012 16:36

Why were you walking around a school? If I visited a school that just had 'perfect' work up I would walk away very quickly because it shows they are not putting children at the centre of the learning. They are trying to impress visitors. That is not education. It is not good practice.

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2012 16:37

Most schools around here are so over subscribed, they've no need to market themselves to anyone.

kelly2525 · 13/02/2012 16:37

If the standard of work is so poor, what does that say about the standard of teaching?

brandysoakedbitch · 13/02/2012 16:37

Biscuit up yer bum

silly moo

Bossybritches22 · 13/02/2012 16:38

Child-centered learning I think it's called.

mewantcookiesmenocanwait · 13/02/2012 16:39

Has anyone else got an urge to go through the OP's posts and correct her use of hyphens, apostrophes and capital letters?

Dear OP,

Come back when you have a coherent and correctly spelt and punctuated post please.

Thank you.

mewantcookiesmenocanwait · 13/02/2012 16:40

Oh, and her spelling. Didn't even notice that the first time round.

kickingking · 13/02/2012 16:43

I work in a school which until fairly recently was in special measures. We were told by an inspector that any work on display should be perfect with NO spelling or grammatical errors.

Cue children being made to copy adult corrected writing out again and again, in order to have perfect work out on display. And what exactly were they learning from copying out adult corrected writing? it was utter madness, and I couldn't believe this was Ofsted sanctioned.

Display work should be of a high standard for that individual child. otherwise it's just the most able and/or neatest children who ever get work on display.

And what age of children are you talking about anyway? Spelling phonetically is perfectly appropriate in KS1 for pretty much all children.

MigratingCoconuts · 13/02/2012 16:44

perhaps OP would feel better if the work was labelled with signs saying stuff like 'Not our brightest kid but she really tried, bless!' Hmm

ShagOBite · 13/02/2012 16:46

Perhaps MN should only display the best posts?

We could have a kind of internal MN for modification, get rid of this kind of thread and only the thought-out or funny survives. Win-win.

TuftyFinch · 13/02/2012 16:48

kickingking my friend works in a school that makes children do this, even with art!

OP the only way your post makes any sense is if;
a) You are Michael Gove or
b) You are the queen

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 16:50

The queen wouldn't be that horrible I don't think Tufty.
