thinking that schools really should TRY to put the best work up on display

I know that for some best is still pretty poor, but as an outsider visiting a school it looks terrible to have semi illiterate work up on display. I was in a sec school today where almost NONE of the work was correct.

it's a condunrum - celebrate indivdual achievement (not necessarily knowing that the kids might have learning issues and therefore presuming the school has low standards) OR to insist all work up is the very best - therefor acting as a good role model for other kids.

LOL at "semi illiterate".

I think an individual's best work should go on show, if they've put some effort in. Irregardless of minor errors Wink

Becaroooo · 13/02/2012 16:52

Is OP an OFSTED Inspector do you think????

Or just a knob?

Hmm............

Even with art work?! Hmm Maybe the opinions I posted above are why I will never be senior management...

TuftyFinch · 13/02/2012 16:54

IUseTooMuch, yes, you're right. The queen is probably way more in touch than Whitebait.

Becarooo they are not mutually exclusive.

TuftyFinch · 13/02/2012 16:55

Wait up, rewind please.

What is ''normal language''?

oldmum42 · 13/02/2012 17:01

The work on display should be the best work of each pupil - some will be "perfect", others less so - surely it's about showing the pupils that all the "best efforts" are valued?

OP have a Biscuit

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 17:03

Is it just me that thinks the OP is reading this thinking that we are all completely wrong and misguided?

Mumofthreeteens · 13/02/2012 17:03

My friend told me her ds 10 was given back his wall work as it wasn't ''good enough'' to display. How bloody cruel. Op I think uabu.

BlackLashes · 13/02/2012 17:04

But seeing their work exhibited up on the wall regardless of ability, raises a child's self esteem. Perhaps those children being able to achieve a piece of written work at all was a real achievement for them!

yellowraincoat · 13/02/2012 17:08

OP, you obviously fancy yourself as some sort of education specialist, so let me tell you that I work with people who have English as a second language, and I have never seen the acronym E2L before. We normally use EAL in schools, just so you know next time you want to post smugly on something.

Do you really think it is in any way motivating when only the kids with good skills see their stuff on the walls? The boards are not there for your benefit, whatever your role was.

lavendergirl123 · 13/02/2012 17:11

Hope you don't pass your opinions on to your offspring, OP.

manicinsomniac · 13/02/2012 17:11

I think YAB mostly U but with a sliver of truth in what you say.

Inside my classroom I make sure that everybody has a piece of work up at least once a term. They look for their work and I think many would feel sad and discouraged if their's was never chosen.

But the display board outside my classroom is for correct pieces of work only, as we are a private school and the head would slate me for having incorrect work where our prospective parents would see it on their tour. I don't mind if the work is objectively 'good' or not, but it can't have typos or grammar mistakes etc in in. Plus, I would tend to (subtly?) state the ability on the board somewhere (eg, 'This term Year 9 Set 3 have been learning about the poets of WWI. Here are some of their own poems).

I don't think censoring the work like that is a good thing. But, sadly, we are a business and we have to sell ourselves to the paying customers, most of whom are the type of parents who definitely WOULD be put off by spelling and punctuation errors on a display board.

TroublesomeEx · 13/02/2012 17:12

OP, YABU all children deserve to have their work celebrated.

And it isn't always the best work that goes up. It might be work they have done independently to show that their individual work is recognised and not just the work they've written when guided by an adult.

OnlyFunctionsWithCaffeine · 13/02/2012 17:47

I agree OP, they should only put up the best work, or if the school insist on putting up the rubbish work of those SN children they could at least label them accordingly so anyone reading would know...I am of course kidding op, and I actually think you should just get a grip...

Or instead you could just have this; Biscuit

YABU

Surely if we used the OP's criteria, no work whatsoever would go up on walls at school - 99% of work is going to have imperfections of some sort in it, that's why the kids are still at school!

vj32 · 13/02/2012 18:10

Displays in secondary are different to primary. I have over 300 children in my classroom each week, so not possible to display a piece of work from each child. I have to do my own displays (not supposed to according to the unions but no TAs to do it and it reflects badly on me if the classroom doesn't look good). So they get changed about once a year. But I do have display boards covering all except one wall!!

I have a few boards of assessed work - showing a piece of work from each level with comments. A few boards with pictures and key words from a topic, and a tutor board with school info. So yes I would include work that might be some poor spelling if its part of an example of a low level. But only if it is good for that child - I wouldn't put up work where a child hasn't done well as thats a bit mean!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 13/02/2012 18:18

Yabu. I would not want my children at a school which didn't recognise and value every child's contribution, no matter how good or bad. Rewarding effort is of utmost importance with primary school kids.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2012 18:24

Biscuit only my second.

SuePurblybilt · 13/02/2012 18:26

Is she coming back? I want to ask her opinions on finger painting. Some of it is really shit, isn't it? Wouldn't a nice print from Athena market the school better?
