That a child my child has been playing with at nursey has herpes? She was born with it contracted from.the mother apparently. She had no sores that I could see but had something in her mouth and my child picked it up only later did I find out that the child had herpes and had been playing with my dc. Should I b worried?

I'm not asking IF the child has herpes, but let's just say for a second that she does.. should I be worried? I don't know why this has turned into a debate I just wanted to know if my child was at risk of contracting herpes from her. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry if I have offended anyone.

I would speak to the nursery about your concerns if you are worried.

ditsydoll · 09/02/2012 21:15

Thank you.

It's not much to be 'worried' about. If your child gets a coldsore, take her to the GP and you'll get some zovirax. If not, she's fine. Confused

Why would you be worried?

Feminine · 09/02/2012 21:17

I find it odd that you would know she was born with it?

Is that even possible?

If you have/had herpes during birth/pregnancy , the mother will take antibiotics to prevent it from spreading.

If she had caught it from her Mother afterwards then that could be a very sad tale.

Feminine · 09/02/2012 21:18

*spreading to the baby ...transferring I mean.

ditsydoll · 09/02/2012 21:18

Well I just associate herpes with kind of being an STI which if contracted at birth it sort of is isn't it? Or is it exactly the same as a cold sore?

OP posts:
RandomMess · 09/02/2012 21:19

I would ask if they have a policy of any child with an ative sore being excluded.

I have no idea if they are contagious enough to be passed on through the mouthing of communal toys which is your concern.

The initial bout of herpes of this kind can be very painful and nasty and last a few weeks Sad

roundtable · 09/02/2012 21:19

A cold sore is herpes.

Kayano · 09/02/2012 21:19

Oh ffs look it up

This is mean and rude gossip. Have you told anyone else in rl about the child potentially having herpes op?

Feminine · 09/02/2012 21:19

ditsy it is the same family.

not the same thing at all.

People with cold-sores are told to keep away from new borns ,as it can be fatal.

None of your story adds up.

faeriemoo · 09/02/2012 21:21

feminine Unfortunately, yes, if the mother is having an outbreak at the time of a vaginal birth, it can be passed on to the baby.

ditsydoll If you were genuinely wondering from a medical point of view, you'd have posted this in a health forum, not in a 'debating' one. You were being judgemental of the dirty slapper of a mother.

OnlyWantsOne · 09/02/2012 21:21

I think the OP is a complete arse for indulging in such shitty gobshite at the nursery.

Fwiw I hope you never contract any nasties OP. and become less holy Hmm

OnlyWantsOne · 09/02/2012 21:23

AND this being posted in AIBU if you genuinely have worries over your child's health is massively inappropriate

faeriemoo · 09/02/2012 21:23

By the way, OP, how do you know that Diseased-Child had the toy in her mouth, then your kiddo put it in their mouth later? Who told you that?

roundtable · 09/02/2012 21:23

Oh, sorry forgot to say.

You are being unreasonable.

ditsydoll · 09/02/2012 21:23

What story?

The mother told me, the mothers passed on herpes at birth and the little girl had complications because of the virus. I was just worried about her playing in close contact is all.

OP posts:
ShagOBite · 09/02/2012 21:24

Ah yes, me too.

YABU.

ledkr · 09/02/2012 21:25

My friend baby girl had herpes the other week and it wasnt alittle cold sore it was a fecking mouth full of painfull blisters which stopped her from eating and drinking for days and mde her absolutely miserable. My baby had been playing with her and sucking the same toys and im not afriad to admit i was really worried especially as she had just had acleft repair.Fortunately she didnt apppear to contract it but she is currently having her 2nd attack and she's only 16 months poor baby.I dont think its bad to be concerned at all op.

OnlyWantsOne · 09/02/2012 21:25

You said a friend of the family told you.

Now you're saying the mother told you Hmm

ditsydoll · 09/02/2012 21:28

I was there, it was a stay and play day which iS why I was with the other mothers. One of the girls just said she had had complications at birth due to a herpes virus contracted when she was born. It wasn't malicious gossip. I just wanted to know if it was something I should be worried about.

OP posts:
Feminine · 09/02/2012 21:28

op what kind of complications? Hmm

ditsydoll · 09/02/2012 21:29

No I said the mother (meaning one of the mums) told me that the mum.passed it on at birth

OP posts:
WibblyBibble · 09/02/2012 21:29

Dude, about 80% of the UK population carry HSV1 ("cold sore virus"). I know I do and I still have a degree and am not dead at the grand old age of 33. Why on earth would you be worried about it? You most likely carry it yourself.

If it's HSV2 (genital herpes) you're concerned about, then I think you probably have at least another 12 years until you need to worry about your daughter picking it up...

MigratingCoconuts · 09/02/2012 21:30

your child is not at risk because the nursery would not have allowed it.
