...how do you not remember some things you've read them say so it doesn't influence you when you come across them again?

Not anything in particular, but when posters say 'well I never take any notice of which poster says what', what if you can't help but make the connection?

I agree spats and shit shouldn't be dragged across the boards, and that a poster who's seemingly being shitty one minute on a thread you can have a laugh with the next.

But sometimes it's hard not to let what you've read colour your view of a poster.

I'm not being unreasonable I've had gin or I wouldn't have posted would I? Wink or Smile? Can't decide.

I don't think you can unremember things.

There is one poster who always posts very passionately and belligerently on a particularly contentious topic. I know that lots of people find her method of debate (and some of her views) disagreeable but a little while ago I did a search on another, unrelated topic and some old threads came up that gave me a little window into some of the trials this person had been through.

Now I completely understand where she's coming from and although I still disagree with most of what she says I have a new found respect for the way that she tries to get her point across because I know that someone, somewhere is going to benefit from that information.

nenevomito · 05/02/2012 17:19

I do notice names sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a I-wish-we-had-a-hide-poster-option kind of way but generally only name check after I'd read what they've written.

There's a few names I look out for as I like to chat with them but one rarely ventures outside one of the specialist topics and one keeps on bloody well name changing just to confuse me I'm looking at you w0rmy.

Chubfuddler · 05/02/2012 17:24

Does anyone else think at least one person in this thread must be talking about them?

Firawla · 05/02/2012 17:31

I remember quite a few names, and sometimes you can't help but make an opinion about a poster if you see them keep saying certain points of view. I don't see what is wrong with that, it's natural really.

runningwilde · 05/02/2012 19:22

Chub... I wouldn't be surprised Grin
would not bother me though as I am quite happy with the opinions i have and if people want to angrily disagree that's fine too!

runningwilde · 05/02/2012 19:24

Popbiscuit... Am soooo curious!

Jacksmania · 05/02/2012 22:15

I definitely have a shit list. It's not laminated only because I don't own a laminator. Interestingly, one or two people on this thread might be on it. so Chubfuddler's post made me :o

SinicalSanta · 05/02/2012 23:24

fuck it.
it's me i know. I'm a lovely poster til I get at the oul vino and get a bit snarly. People are surprised.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2012 23:32

I mostly remember posters who make me laugh or I agree with. And of course the tribe of TP fans (I don't think I've come across a nasty one yet)

INeverFinishAnythi · 05/02/2012 23:58

I don't read names very often, unless I'm going to reply to something someone said so I need their name to write in my post, or if a comment is particularly funny or shitty I'll look to see who said it. I do recognise quite a lot of user names though, and thinking 'oh yes, she usually talks sense' or 'oh her again, she's always so rude!' etc, so I suppose I must take more notice of them than I realise consciously! I change usernames quite often so doubt anyone has an opinion about me. I use MN more for something to read, and advice when i need it, rather than to make friends.

SinicalSanta · 06/02/2012 00:03

I do notice names, though it's not really the opinions I note (unless shocking), more the style.
I really like reasonable calm headed people, who can disagree politely. I take more notice of them, than the spittle flecked fist shakers. Even though, worryin gly, I may actually agree with the jist of what they are saying.

AgentZigzag · 06/02/2012 00:04

I love your MN name INeverFinishAnythi Grin

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 06/02/2012 00:21

I recognise names but don't often remember what they have said on other threads. There are people I can argue with on one thread and agree with or laugh with on the next.

There are four people whose names make me do a bit of eye rolling and sighing, just by seeing their names on a thread. One of them doesn't really deserve it, two definitely do (one more than the other to the point I won't open a thread if she started it) and the fourth one has a name I can never remember until I see it on the thread and I have a "why do I know that name? Oh!" Angry moment.

Lovecat · 06/02/2012 00:23

I find I read vile posts and think 'oh you utter cunt' and then look at the posting name and it's almost always the same people, so in a way it's quite comforting to know that there aren't that many of them out there... posts I agree with I tend not to notice the name so much unless they're unusually wise/witty/lovely. And the few MNers I know in RL I pay attention to because I know them...

I do agree with zigzag, though, I feel that those who say they never notice who anyone is are being somewhat... disingenuous.

AgentZigzag · 06/02/2012 00:24

You deserve it for being so honest INF Grin

What'll annoy me the most though is I'll be scrabbling around in my moth eaten memory to remember it the next time I see a 'MN names you love the most' thread.

OP posts:
c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 06/02/2012 00:32

just name the poster agentzigzag

AgentZigzag · 06/02/2012 00:43

C'mon, keep up Grin

OP posts:
c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 06/02/2012 00:47

sorry - must read threads properly before posting Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/02/2012 04:25

Us TP name checkers are fabulous. Grin You never know though. I used to roll my eyes and sigh at someone then she said that she has struggled with a PD and I felt for her. I still disagree with her a lot but it made me pause and try to empathise.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 07/02/2012 00:05

ive noticed (apart from very serious posts on very serious subjects)that this is all virtual, i.e. one massive algorythm dealing with in a very clever way everyvirtualone s post, clever me ,?or, maybe ,i just don t get it . 2 cynical , perhaps?

GrimwigTheHeadEater · 07/02/2012 00:09
