Umm, what it said in the title Grin

ERUP · 01/02/2012 21:56

And if yes, or no, why? And if no, at what age would you?

OP posts:
exexpat · 01/02/2012 21:57

When she's old enough to pay for them herself.

troisgarcons · 01/02/2012 21:57

No.

14 or 15 - Year 10 perhaps.

But Im a dreadful dinosaur

Sirzy · 01/02/2012 21:58

no. plenty of time for that when she is old enough to pay herself older

workshy · 01/02/2012 21:59

yes -if she paid!

BelleDameSansMerci · 01/02/2012 21:59

What colour is her hair now?

I think 13 is the youngest really but I'd probably let her have a few highlights if they weren't too crashingly obvious.

Panzee · 01/02/2012 21:59

Same as exexpat. Sure, if you pay for them.

bumpybecky · 01/02/2012 22:00

no

I'd 'allow' it when she could pay in full for herself
I've for dds of 13 and 11 (plus younger dc) so like to think I'm not totally out of touch (they'd say otherwise!)

larks35 · 01/02/2012 22:00

No and when she can afford to pay for it herself out of her own hard-earned money (ie not pocket money or pressies). I'm prob being hard-nosed and others will disagree but I hate the fact that young girls feel the need to change the way they beautifully look and that includes dyeing hair, make-up and ridiculous nails!

dexter73 · 01/02/2012 22:01

It's not the highlights themselves that would make me say no but the cost and upkeep of them.

Sidge · 01/02/2012 22:02

No.

Not until 15 or so I think.

Also who's going to finance redoing them every 8 weeks or so at 70 quid a pop?

Feminine · 01/02/2012 22:05

No.

I am not keen on any form of dye or high-lights anyway...I don't like the chemical aspect.

Although I know highlights don't come in to contact with the skin like dye does, I would also be concerned about an allergic reaction.

Let her use lemon juice ...like I had to [unfair face] Grin

ERUP · 01/02/2012 22:06

So she has enough money for the first set - from gifts and selling something on Ebay. But won't have enough for the upkeep.
My opinion is that she won't be able to afford to keep it up, it's bad for her hair and it's not a good look for a 12 year old.
Happy to consider I'm a dinosaur but would like a good range of opinions.

dearprudence · 01/02/2012 22:06

Possibly, although it seems a teeny bit young.

Why? I started with the hair dye at around 14, including the likes of Sun-In. It looked pretty horrid and wrecked my hair. I paid for it myself. If it was my DD, I'd rather shell out and have the hair looking nicer.

I'd maybe agree to a few highlights rather than a full head.

OcarinaOfTime · 01/02/2012 22:07

No. Tell her to revel in her own colour now as she'll be dying it because of grey hairs soon enough! Not that I'm bitter or anything.

squeakytoy · 01/02/2012 22:07

Nope.. not until she had left school.

Bleach blonde on young girls, with the roots showing through looks common and cheap.

Check your school rules. Ours says natural colour only so if a brunette turned up with blonde highlights she'd be sent home till it was died back & vice versa. It's an expensive lesson some parents / pupils have learnt!

ERUP · 01/02/2012 22:10

No way strandedbear !?

kiwimumof2boys · 01/02/2012 22:12

No way - maybe try a rinse or henna though ?

Kiwiinkits · 01/02/2012 22:12

As a very special treat, yes.
I had REALLY strict parents (no ear piercing, sensible clothes etc) but for my 12th birthday (in 1992) I begged to have a perm so I could look like Keri Russell! Mum let me, bless her, and it was the best present EVER. I felt so grown up and sophisticated.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 01/02/2012 22:12

Not a hope - she could whinge & whine all she wanted, but it would not be happening. She's (IMO as that's what you asked for Grin) too young - too young to be worrying about the shade of her hair, too young to have that much money spent on her hair, too young to grow up that quickly.

I'd sooner she wanted to dye it red/pink/skybluegreen to make a 'statement' than put blonde highlights in it 'to look prettier'. 12. Not.A.Chance.

TheFeministsWife · 01/02/2012 22:13

Yes, I would. DSD was got highlights for her 12th birthday. I also started dying my hair when I was 12.

GrahamTribe · 01/02/2012 22:13

No. As larks said, when they're old enough to pay for it themselves with money they've earned and not before.

Irishchic · 01/02/2012 22:14

Oh give me strength! Are you SERIOUS??

No. No and no again. Your DH is 12 god's sake, too old for dolls maybe, but waaay too young to be messing with her natural hair colour!
