Did he look bothered?

SoupDragon · 01/02/2012 21:43

YABU.

If the child was cold he wouldn't wear them. It's called picking your battles.

Gumby · 01/02/2012 21:44

Yanbu Sad

jobdilemma · 01/02/2012 21:44

I know, it looks awful, I hate seeing boys in shorts in winter with their little blue knees Sad.

DS's best mate in primary wore shorts all year one time as a personal challenge. I have a photo of them making a snowman in our garden and the lad looks freezing but happy!

OneLittleChicken · 01/02/2012 21:45

I'm not sure if he was bothered or not, he had a hat and gloves on, but bare legs Confused

Deffo a report to social services! Whatever is the world comng to? Shorts? OMG! perhaps all the old sorts in hot pants falling out of wine bars and pubs at midnight should all be wrapping up armly too Grin

BTW there is a father (elderly retired) ofd a primary child who persists in wearing 1970's cur away shirts, hiking boots and arather thick jakcet every day. He's got to be 70+ and it clearly hasnt doen him any harm.

disclaimer I feel very fatuitous tonight.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/02/2012 21:46

My DD wears over-the-knee-socks and an above the knee skirt .- I know, I know.

I'm always nagging her the pull her skirt down and her socks up.

On non PE days I try to get her to wear tights but she prefers the socks Hmm

Probably showing the same amount of leg as the boy in shorts.!

Eglu · 01/02/2012 21:47

YABU. There are loads of children at my DCs school who wear shorts every day. It was -2 here today.

My DC would not choose to do so but clearly these children do.

Kellamity · 01/02/2012 21:48

DS doesn't wear shorts but only because I won't let him. He would wear them all year round and wouldn't feel the cold - he's weird like that though! He regularly dresses in t shirt and shorts at the weekends and moans and moans when I ask him to put a layer on.

lazylula · 01/02/2012 21:50

I suppose it would be the same as seeing a girl in a dress and socks rather than tights, which I see quite a bit, so although unusaul, if the child was happy no problem. I personally wouldn't do it though.

DeWe · 01/02/2012 21:50

Ds will choose to wear shorts. He's worn trousers twice since starting school (and went through a seam in two days but the shop replaced them) The girls would have worn skirt and below the knee socks, and actually his shorts until recently were below the knee, so I don't see it's worse.

marriedinwhite · 01/02/2012 21:54

yabu. Our ds hated long trousers until he was about 11-1/2 and embarrassment got the better of him. Longish shorts, knee high socks. The reason he agreed to transfer to the local prep was because the headmaster's secretary kindly told him that they would let him wear shorts until he was at least 13 and nobody would make him wear long trousers if he didn't want to Grin.

jicky · 01/02/2012 21:55

Mine wear shorts most of the time.

Sometimes the older boy has to wear long trousers (to match class mates for concerts etc).

The younger one has not worn trousers for a year I think. He sometimes complains his legs are cold walking to school, but when I say the solution is to wear trousers he refuses!

Boys never used to wear long trousers at primary school when I went. They all survived.

SandStorm · 01/02/2012 21:56

DD1 went to school with a boy who only went into long trousers when he hit secondary school. He was never bothered by it. Some people just don't feel the cold.

dixiechick1975 · 01/02/2012 21:57

At DD's school the boys uniform is shorts all year round

They wear long socks held up with garters and long shorts so not much knee showing.

GeorgianMumto5 · 01/02/2012 21:59

Dd has a Milly-Molly-Mandy book. (Bear with me on this one.) MMM's best friend Billy wears shorts all the time, including in the episode where is is snowing and they tramp through the woods to take a younger girl to school and sledge down he snowy hills. Admittedly Billy is a fictional character but I checked this out with my dad (slightly younger than MMM) and he reckons short all year round were standard practise.

AnonyMaw · 01/02/2012 22:00

There's a boy in my DD's class at school who refuses to wear anything apart from shorts, no matter the weather. He's 6yo. His parents despair of it, but I guess they pick their battles.

Whatmeworry · 01/02/2012 22:01

DS2 didnt feel the cold at all at that age, DS1 would have been teeth chattering.

stealthsquiggle · 01/02/2012 22:02

DS had to wear shorts year-round up to and including Y3. Interestingly, it was only in Y3 that he started complaining of cold knees - up until then he didn't appear to notice.

Firawla · 01/02/2012 22:06

yanbu its way too cold for shorts, i don't think the school should allow them to wear it apart from summer term and parents should be putting their children in trousers. if the child moans and "wont wear" the trousers then i think its worth putting your foot down for this. it can not be good for their health. im suprised any child would even want to anyway!

blackeyedsusan · 01/02/2012 22:10

is his dad a postman?

all the post men round here seem to still be wearing shorts despite the cold.

007alert · 01/02/2012 22:10

My ds (7) has not worn long trousers for more than 2 years. He is the only child in school in shorts (and short socks) but he likes them, and says that if his legs did get cold he would wear trousers. He's not stupid, he just likes shorts!

yabu

Mummysmall · 01/02/2012 22:14

My kids school uniform is shorts for all boys all year! DS doesn't care a bit. Def not quite a Social Services call!

COCKadoodledooo · 01/02/2012 22:26

Ds1 would wear shorts in all weathers (in the pissing rain he argues they're better as at least his legs are waterproof Grin ), but I insist he wears trousers to school in winter because I'm a soft arse. He might not feel the cold but it makes me shiver just to look at him!

Dh did say actually that they were mollycoddling him when he started in reception as he didn't have to wear short trousers all year round.

In all, that's a YABU op!

dearprudence · 01/02/2012 22:33

DS is 9 and has been in shorts every day so far this school year. He's worn mainly shorts since reception.

Some years, he's gone into long trousers around December/Jan when it's really cold, or if it's snowing.

The shorts are nearly knee length. He insists he's not cold. If he was, he'd wear longs.
