Would the female equivalent be banning woolly tights?

Another terrible parent here who lets her son go to school if he wants to. At the moment he is choosing to wear trousers but at 4.5 I think he's old enough to decide about something like that.

Would I let him wear a pink wig and dinosaur outfit? Well it's not on the school uniform list at our school. However, if one morning he insisted on wearing a dinosaur outfit then I'd let him, and see what his teacher said when he got to school (and she wouldn't be terribly thrilled, and wools let him know, and then we'd go and get him changed into the proper uniform I'd have brought with me).

My philosophy would be that if it is part of the uniform and he will come to no harm wearing it, then really it's his own choice.

My brother refused to wear anything but shorts for about five years. I remember the screaming battles about it and eventually my mum gave up. She was always being abused in the street by people who saw my brother and assumed she was being mean or neglectful when at 6/7/8/9 years old it was my brother who was desperate to wear shorts all the time, no matter the weather. My brother developed a fine line in explaining the situation and that he was perfectly happy thank-you. My mum always had a pair of trousers in her bag.

I don't like being too hot either and I was always the first in summer uniform at school and even now I wear my sandals until its actually snowing.

My old boss wore shorts all year round too, but he was a grizzled old archaeologist who didn't take any questioning about his choices well.

Just like "anothermadamebutterfly", I did not grow up here. Every time I see children in shorts/skirts at temperatures of under 25 degrees (and when is it ever be as warm as 25 degrees in Britain...), I feel the UN should force Britain to once and for all stop this crime against humanity....

What sort of shorts are your sons wearing to school in Winter? Flimsy PE/sport shorts? If so, then no wonder they are cold! At most British Prep schools where boys are required to wear short trousers in summer and winter, you?ll find that they are usually wool/corduroy/flannel, fully lined in either cotton/nylon and reach to or a few inches above the knee. When warn with knee-length woollen socks, their jumpers, top coats and hats, I doubt they would feel the cold. In fact, the composition of these shorts probably make them considerably warmer than the flimsy polyester long trousers you can purchase from Tesco/Asda... My son was quite happy to wear shorts to school: cords for the summer and flannel in Winter. Maybe you should check the composition of your shorts before purchasing. Harrods, John Lewis, Hewett?s of Croydon and Clan House of Scotland, stock a wide range of boys school shorts suitable for wearing in cold weather.
