to wonder why on earth I thought Ed Byrne was sexy?

Just seen him on Three Men go to Scotland (Dara, Griff and Rory in boats) and my heart sank deeper than a dingy with Rory McGrath in it :o

I always used to think he looked a bit rock and roll, a bit sexy, and more than a wee bit dirty. Loved his hair, and loved his comedy. Sexy and funny, the perfect combo.

Until tonight. When he was revealed in all his glory wearing his wet weather gear ready to climb a hill, for fun. Infact he collects hills, in a manner of speaking, he marks off the ones he has climbed. You know, because they are there Hmm. The train spotter look was bad enough but the fleece and nylon hat jammed on his head like a pudding bowl with straggly bits of hair sticking out of the bottom was just so wrong.

He looked like he had bad breath and lived with his mum!

Now I have no problem with this in itself, whatever floats yer boat, but not him! Not my sexy rock n roll comedian!

Anyone else come down to earth with a bump when a crush turns out to be a geek?!

I am very very old, so my story of David McCallum, the dirty Aran jumper, the shepherds pie and the ketchup will make no sense to you. Suffice it to say, the feet of clay thus revealed were so much clay-ier than discovering that Eddie's a Munro- bagger!

Bogeyface · 31/01/2012 23:16

Munro-Bagging!!!!

I couldnt think of the name :o It actually sounds like a very dubious sexual practice now I think on it :o

Ed lives with his girlfriend/wife
He is 40.
And is not at all vain, couldn't give a #### how he looks.
He is funny.

Bogeyface · 31/01/2012 23:18

Tells us the story anyway.

I want it to be a bit sexy.......it wont be will it?

Ah well......

He is married to a girl from v v near my parents cottage, and I sure they are super happy and I really want them to be. This is the RL me.

But when you are on the telly you have an image to uphold and that doesnt include wearing trainspotter hats, he ruined my fantasy goddammit :o

In fairness, hill-walking gear makes everyone look woeful. Though there is something deeply unsexy about keeping a list and checking off mountains you've been up on it.

Munro-bagging does sound a bit like tea-bagging, now you mention it. Grin

Bogeyface · 01/02/2012 00:26

Hard

I think I might have forgiven the hat if it werent for the list. I went from "ooh!" when they mention he was on to "urgh" when he talked about trying to climb all the hills. He'll be coming out as a Stobarter next :o

Never a good idea to fancy a comedian. Bad news all round.

WMDinthekitchen · 01/02/2012 03:22

Ed Byrne isn't good looking (most people aren't) but sometimes he's a laugh. I am not constantly witty, am not surrounded by hot guys vying for my attention, don't have an Oxb First, don't play hockey for my country and I can't say, 'Oh isn't it dreary having to turn down all those Vogue covers because David and Nick need my advice yet again?' I would like to be/have at least one of the above! I'll dream on. Or at least I would if I could sleep. But I can't. Again. Just getting my coat to go out and lurk in the kennel.

MorrisZapp · 01/02/2012 08:21

Yanbu, he is not hot.

The last gig I saw him do a few years ago had an oddly misogynist slant, though was v funny in parts.

Also he bragged about his past mega shagging exploits.

Nowt against the bloke but... naaah.

bunnyspoiler · 01/02/2012 09:27

oooh no he has never been sexy, always seemed a total geek rather then R'N'Roll. YABU.

marriedtoagoodun · 01/02/2012 09:33

Well I have sat next to Mr Byrne (and his lovely wife) and he spent over five hours on a Saturday night at a dinner night, acting as an auctioneer to raise money for a very worthwhile chairty. He must work a lot on weekends and yet gave up one of his few free weekends to help other people - so he can wear nylon hats and I will still say that he is a very nice man!! And his wife is VERY pretty so she must agree too :)

seeker · 01/02/2012 09:41

Munro bagging is different to trains spotting and things like that though- there are only 283 of them, and it's all outdoorsy and healthy. Did Ed say how many he's done?

ShowOfHands · 01/02/2012 09:49

Have never fancied him but have seen him live a few times. He's not rock n roll, he's a self confessed uber geek. He is actually quite intelligent and I like his nerdy side. His sketch about what men are actually thinking about when their girlfriends needle them in a 'you must be thinking something' type way is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen live.

Eddie Izzard is who you want if sexy comedian's your thing.

You can't have David Mitchell though.

ShowOfHands · 01/02/2012 09:50

Oh God yes. Jon Richardson. Stick a cherry on him and it's Christmas.

I secretly LOVE his cardigans.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 01/02/2012 09:54

I LOVE Jon Richardson.

His self deprecation has me all a quiver.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 01/02/2012 09:57

Mind you I have a "thing" for Chris Addison and I don't know why.
He is so thin.
He is so pale he's practically transparent.
He has an inordinate amount of hair for a thin, transparent person.
And yet ...?
I don't know Grin

TroublesomeEx · 01/02/2012 10:08

Fo0ffy and ShowOfHands this might cure you!!!

Or just make it worse...

Grin
TheParanoidAndroid · 01/02/2012 10:14

Oh well, at least we are being equal opportunity shallow now, and famous men have to be dull, image obsessed morons with no intellectualism, interests or other pursuits, for fear of being judged as "trainspotters".

No, I've never been crushed by unearthing geekiness, mainly because there is nothing so sexy as an unashamed geek.

BendyBob · 01/02/2012 10:24

I'm afraid to say that I find the 'looking a sight/fearsomely talented' combo quite lethally attractive.

The jammed on nylon hat and geeky hobby would probably only have endeared Ed further to me.

The bigger the talent and the more odd and strange they look because they really don't care, the more drawn I am. Of course there must be talent or intelligence in there too, otherwise forget it; I'm not that forgivingGrin

Blimey just look at my hero It's ok, I know I'm probably on my own with this one Blush

TroublesomeEx · 01/02/2012 10:30

because there is nothing so sexy as an unashamed geek Quite agree!

TroublesomeEx · 01/02/2012 10:31

BendyBob I don't do beards, but he looks rather cute under all that lot!

JennyPiccolo · 01/02/2012 10:32

'Munro- bagging' = 'collecting hills' sounds like you put that into google translate!

JennyPiccolo · 01/02/2012 10:32

Also when I first read it I pictured John Byrne in my head. Less sexy.

seeker · 01/02/2012 10:37

If, like me, you are fascinated by religion and belief, Chris Addison is very interesting on the subject of losing his faith.
