to ask how much money you have a month that is yours to do what you like with?

Just cos I'm nosey. :)

And also because I have about £150 a month to spend how I like (clothes, going out, birthday presents etc) and DH seems to think that is a lot.

I don't think it is that much, I do pay for DS's gym out of it too actually so that is £5 a week so suppose am left with about £130.

Is £30 a week that much free spending money? I don't think it is! DH probably doesnt buy things has often as me but when he does they cost about four times as much (I buy clothes from asda, he buys specialist golf clothes) so probably averages the same. Also he drinks when he goes out and I don't. Although I do end up stopping everyone home as only sober person which does cost me in petrol instead!

Just wondered.

A lot more than that so dont worry!!! £150 a month is not that much - how much does he allow himself then?

Kladdkaka · 30/01/2012 15:38

Not a penny. I have no income at all.

VacantExpression · 30/01/2012 15:39

A lot less than that.

fullofregrets · 30/01/2012 15:40

He doesn't really set an amount, he just buys stuff as and when but as I am a sahm that is what I have just for me.
I don't think it is all that much, for example my dad is 60 soon and I will get him something nice so that will be about £50 gone for that month. Plus it us DH's birthday on the same day (inconsiderate) so I will hardly have anything left that month I fear!

About £250 of my earnings is unaccounted for by bills and savings but we pretty much treat all money as family money. Some months (not often) I will spend that and more on myself. Other months I don't spend a penny on myself.

Dinosaurhunter · 30/01/2012 15:41

No set amount , I tend to do what I like but of course I'm aware of the finances and know what I can or cannot afford.

flatbellyfella · 30/01/2012 15:41

KladdkakaSad life is so unfare.

Dinosaurhunter · 30/01/2012 15:43

I'm also a sahm.

fullofregrets · 30/01/2012 15:43

And I'm not really complaining, I just wondered as sometimes DH will say can you buy me such and such and if I say I can't afford it he gives me a glare. But I remind him that if he has asked me to but him something for £15 that's a tenth of my free spending money gone (quick maths skills there. ;) )

Hard to comment if YABU when we don't know your household income / outgoings etc, but if you have a monthly budget and this is your agreed spending money then YANBU. If you have a specific budget then DH should have one too - what's his?

IME it's quite common for women to spend little and often and men to buy more expensive items infrequently. My DH is the same.

Wittsend13 · 30/01/2012 15:45

Maybe about £300? Personally I don't think it's enough but I also bring up my child so it's better than a kick in the teeth!

Kladdkaka · 30/01/2012 15:46

Flatbellyfella I don't mind, I don't go anywhere to spend money anyway. My husband used to put money in my purse, just in case, but 6 months later it'd still be there and he'd borrow it back for something else. So long as he's kept my WoW subscription up to date, I'm happy. :o

Kladdkaka · 30/01/2012 15:49

I should add, my husband does all the shopping because I hate it. I do some online, like Christmas presents, and then he pays for it all (including the pressies I've ordered for him, although he's not allowed to look at what he's paying for)

Kayano · 30/01/2012 15:49

Prob about £15 a
Week if I am lucky!!!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 30/01/2012 15:50

It sounds as though your husband is quite controlling, OP.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 30/01/2012 15:50

Why can't he pay money towards his child's birthday presents?

Lasvegas · 30/01/2012 15:50

Out of my net salary, after I have paid, commuting, car loan, childcare, school fees, mortgage, utility bills, food, the necessities if you like. Per month I spend £120 on gym membership for me and DD
£80 on my weekly hobby
£140 on DD's weekly hobbies
£ 30 a month on clothes /makeup for me and DD
These are my main luxuries

dementedma · 30/01/2012 15:51

nothing really. it all goes on bills and living expenses.

SomebodySaveMe · 30/01/2012 15:52

About £15. I feel happy if I end up with £20!

WorraLiberty · 30/01/2012 15:52

Money's just money in this house

If we need it, we spend it.

I have no idea how much we 'have for ourselves' as we don't really live like that.

philmassive · 30/01/2012 15:55

At the moment I get about £5 per week if I'm lucky and there are no expenses that I haven't allowed for. I am, however, mentally planning and virtually shopping for the day that I have £150 per day to fritter on delicacies and little bits of fluff. Grin

Tee2072 · 30/01/2012 15:59

My husband and I are on a very tight budget and we each get £20 a week pocket money for things like a coffee or lunch out. He also has a newspaper/magazine habit he supports out of that!

rootietootie · 30/01/2012 16:03

About £600 between me and dp after all the bills are paid only because our mortgage is so small, when we move that amount will be drastically reduced Sad but always manages to get frittered away on small things ebay before I get the chance to spend it on anything big Grin

Forrestgump · 30/01/2012 16:10

I am lucky i dont have to budget, but I am not extragent. I have friend who will treat themselves to a mulberry handbag etc a month etc, I dont spend ridiculous amounts of money, but do buy things if i feel i need them.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 30/01/2012 16:11

I must say I haven't got a clue.

I don't really think of money being limited to x amount a week to spend each.
