Just cos I'm nosey. :)

And also because I have about £150 a month to spend how I like (clothes, going out, birthday presents etc) and DH seems to think that is a lot.

I don't think it is that much, I do pay for DS's gym out of it too actually so that is £5 a week so suppose am left with about £130.

Is £30 a week that much free spending money? I don't think it is! DH probably doesnt buy things has often as me but when he does they cost about four times as much (I buy clothes from asda, he buys specialist golf clothes) so probably averages the same. Also he drinks when he goes out and I don't. Although I do end up stopping everyone home as only sober person which does cost me in petrol instead!

Just wondered.

I have no money that is mine, DH has no money that is his , it's all ours - £150 seems a ridiculous amount to spend on yourself every month though, ( in an "average" earning -wise household) I doubt we spend that much per month between us on meals out and clothes etc.

DD, who is 22 and a clothes/shoes-aholic and all round party girl only spends about £50 a week on clothes and going out so it seems like a lot to me.

Actually DH does have "pocket money" of sorts, he gets £25 out every week, £5 of which he takes to work and buys us food from the factory shop ( a large chicken is £1.50 so a fiver goes a long way) the other £20 he puts away upstairs and it's our holiday spending money/emergency stash.

I just buy clothes as I need them and DH buys crap collectibles off ebay , neither of us would spend a large amount without informing the other though, if we had pots of money it would be a different story obviously.

Some months more than others. On average about £30.

But this is because I spend all my money on childcare, which won't always be the case. Before they started school I was in minus figures some months!

JoandMax · 30/01/2012 16:20

No set amounts, I just buy stuff when I need/want it (w

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 30/01/2012 16:23

i honestly don't know
we are far from wealthy but our core outgoings (mortgage, cars, bills) are less than our incomes, so there is usually a little left over at the end of the month - this month enough for a couple of meals out. depends on how much fixing the aged cars/house have needed in any given month.

JoandMax · 30/01/2012 16:23

Arghhh, toddler involvement there!

I'm a SAHM, we have one joint account and I know how much we have incoming/outgoing, any expensive purchases we discuss first but otherwise if me or DCs need something I get it. No idea how much I spend just on me per month.....

ExitPursuedByaBear · 30/01/2012 16:25

Nothing as such. We have a joint account, the horse costs me a fortune and I buy what I want/need as and when.

usingapseudonym · 30/01/2012 16:26

I don't think there's a set answer to this. I don't have as much as you to spend on "me" a month but we aren't doing great financially at the moment. As you can see lots of people are far better off (especially on mumsnet!) and lots of people will be worse off.

We have shared money but if I do have any spare it tends to go on the children. I really really do need some clothes that fit at some point though...

Malificence · 30/01/2012 16:26

I didn't think this was a "what you have left at the end of the month" question, just a "what do you spend purely on yourself?" one.

sozzledchops · 30/01/2012 16:30

SAHM and husband pays money into my account to cover all food, kid, stuff etc and anything we need around the house. Have no idea what I spend on myself a month as we don't really budget or keep track.

TheArmadillo · 30/01/2012 16:31

Me and dh have a £5 per month each debauchary fund (as we refer to it). His goes on computer games and mine goes on kindle books.
Other than that we get xmas/birthday money.

However I buy presents (birthday/xmas) and clothes out of the household savings fund.

DorothyGherkins · 30/01/2012 16:32

If I end up with a tenner at the end of the week, its a good week!

For me £0 a month, for DH £0 a month, and our bills leave us around £50 overdrawn every month. HTH.

NinkyNonker · 30/01/2012 16:35

How much does he have allowed within the budget? Cause if you have 150 and he has none, and you won't buy 'stuff' for him as you (jointly) can't afford it I can understand him being Hmm.

I don't have a set amount, I just spend what I need from spare budget.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 30/01/2012 16:36

DH and I both have £100 each a month to spend on whatever we like. All our money goes into a "big pot" and all expenses come out of that. We then take £100 each and the rest goes into savings which gets used for any big joint spends.

I wouldn't be happy with having to wait to fix up our house because DH couldn't be bothered to make packed lunches and bought too many dvds. DH wouldn't be best pleased with having to wait to replace the car because I'd had too many nights out.

Some months I won't spend it all, some months I spend more than that, but it all evens out, and it avoids any resentment.

Gumby · 30/01/2012 16:36

I have my hair cut once every three months - f"costs £45
I buy clothes about £50 twice a year
I go on Girly weekends about 4 times a year - prob costs about £500 altogether
I've got a part time job - two thirds goes on mortgage rest is mine but I usually spend it on the kids ( clothes, swimming , coffee shops) & bus fares to get to & from work
Night out with the girls twice a month

If I didn't work though I wouldn't be able to afford weekends away, hair cuts etc

HeidiHole · 30/01/2012 16:37

All money is pooled we don't have a set amount each to spend. We both earn very good salaries though so are lucky in that respect.

PaschaAndCustard · 30/01/2012 16:38

£10 or £20 a month if i'm careful budgeting. Sometimes a bit more - maybe £30-£40, sometimes nothing.

mamalovebird · 30/01/2012 16:38

both our salaries go into the joint account and we then transfer £320 each into our own accounts to do what we want with.

EssentialFattyAcid · 30/01/2012 16:40

I spend £8.40 a week just on capuccinos Blush which is quite a poor use of funds

AnonymousBird · 30/01/2012 16:41

Absolutely none. If I need a haircut or something like that (not very frequent!) then I pay for it on my credit card and "find" ten quid a week from the household budget for the next 3 or 4 weeks to pay it off.... If I even buy myself a sandwich I feel guilty as the finances are all accounted for...

AnonymousBird · 30/01/2012 16:41

But I should add that DH does not spend on himself either unless something really necessary (ie. the same as me - no spare spending money).

LittlePickleHead · 30/01/2012 16:41

After putting aside money for saving, DH and I allow ourselves £400 each to do as we wish, but that does have to pay for holidays, petrol, presents etc

I do realise we are lucky, I've recently got a new job and feel very thankful, our situation was closer to £0 a year ago

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 30/01/2012 16:42

You seem to have a strange set up. Why wouldn't you get something that your dh needs for him? If there is then something else you need then there should be money available for that.

I would never think that I have a certain amount that I get to spend on whatever I want each month, it just doesn't work like that in our house. Sometimes the cars need new tyres or whatever so we have less free money that month. Some months we realise we don't have many essentials to pay for so we will buy what we want.

Big purchases have to be saved for, like holidays or the new computer dh wants, but we basically don't waste money, spend what we need to spend to have a decent quality of life, then the rest gets out in the savings account. Sometimes we save, sometimes we don't.
