AIBU to not pay £1.17 for a teeny cauliflower.

YANBU

That's daylight robbery

CavemanDave · 25/01/2012 22:18

I blame the broccoli lovers scandalous, the price of a cauli these days.

AgentZigzag · 25/01/2012 22:19

I'm sure they're about £1.40 odd here, up northish. But you get a big fucker for that.

For the first time in my life I can't justify buying oranges at 40p each Sad

At least choc and crisps are really cheap though eh? Hmm

RinkyDinkyDoo · 25/01/2012 22:20

I am oooop north, a biggish one is £1.47-bugger that.

I've had one on my fridge for a week. You can have it of you like.

I buy them with good intentions but then find them a bit boring.

Any exciting ideas?

QuickLookBusy · 25/01/2012 22:24

[bgrin]

QuickLookBusy · 25/01/2012 22:25

It does a bit doesn't it? A yellow one anyway.

CavemanDave · 25/01/2012 22:25

Break into florets. Pile into a roasting tin. Dust with a little ground cumin. Roast in a really hot oven until it is starting the char a tiny bit around the edges. Heaven.

missingmumxox · 25/01/2012 22:26

2 for a £1 here from the farm shop, 4 years ago it was 4 for a £1 that's inflation for you (same for cabbages)

RinkyDinkyDoo · 25/01/2012 22:26

a bit, but still wouldn't pay £1.17 for it Grin

Rhubarbgarden · 25/01/2012 22:26

Caveman you are right to blame fancypants broccoli. Good old fashioned British cauliflower has been squeezed out by the upstart green stuff. It's become unfashionable and growers have switched to other crops. Poor cauliflower.

Thankgodforcaffeine · 25/01/2012 22:27

99p where I live. It looks like I am getting a good deal!

cruelladepoppins · 25/01/2012 22:28

Rhubarb AYBU to feel sorry for cauliflower? [bgrin]

AgentZigzag · 25/01/2012 22:28

Exciting ideas? What, for caulis?? You must be fucking kidding?

Grin

Come to think of it, I'm not sure why I buy them either.

Maybe I just like getting done over by farmers Wink

blackeyedsusan · 25/01/2012 22:32

bought a giant cauli for 99p last wweek. they have now gone up to £1.20, but they are about 3x the size of supermarket ones.

Spuddybean · 25/01/2012 22:33

about £1.50 near me and they are tiny, we ate 1 between 2 of us tonight, lightly steamed and stirred into pasta, pesto and poached salmon. mmmm

I do resent it tho. and courgettes/aubergines seem ridiculous too.

QuickLookBusy · 25/01/2012 22:38

Yes agent getting done over by a farmer is always a bonus.

Thank you for that Cave, I've never roasted one before, I might try it.

troisgarcons · 25/01/2012 22:43

Dont pay it - grow your own.

Or alternatively shock shop somewhere cheaper like Lidl or Aldo or gasp Asda

AlbertoFrog · 25/01/2012 22:43

Cauliflower pakora is scrum ... or tempura?

Cream of cauli soup is lovely too although it does make the whole house smell of stale farts.

Refuse to pay over £1 for it though so wait until Aldi's have it on special.

WinterIsComing · 25/01/2012 22:44

YABU to eat cauliflowers.

maydaychild · 25/01/2012 22:45

Wait rose and morrisons both £1.17 this week. Same size.

laluna · 25/01/2012 22:45

Licks lips and dribbles at the thought of cauli cheese with bacon

GrendelsMum · 25/01/2012 22:46

I've not had much success growing caulis myself.

I saw fennel bulbs on the market today for 99p each. That's as much as I can contribute to the price of cauliflower debate.

SecretNutellaFix · 25/01/2012 22:49

Cauliflower is Satan's vegetable.

It is foul and disgusting and has no place on a decent table.

Ashera · 25/01/2012 22:56

everyone I've served this to loved it, including kids: cut into small pieces, drizzle with olive oil & juice of a whole lemon, sprinkle with some salt and SMOKED paprika, roast in hot oven until going brown at the edges. Also great steamed, chopped up, sauteed with lemon juice, capers and bread crumbs, then mixed into pasta. seriously. The trick is not overcooking, which makes it truly nasty.
