AIBU to not pay £1.17 for a teeny cauliflower.

I don't really liek cauliflower but I chose one over a broccoli the other day becasue the broc was so much more expensive. I don't know what too do with it other than cauliflower cheese

therehastobemore · 25/01/2012 23:18

never mind the cauliflower - i know it was M&S but £8.95 a kilo of cherries!!! AND they had the audacity to say it was half price? I never thought id find myself saying to my DD, no darling mummy cant afford the nice healthy option you have just chosen. They aren't that much cheaper in Tesco either - FFS, when did they suddenly become an endangered species? I have to admit that i did steal one - it felt good.

GrendelsMum · 25/01/2012 23:20

Well, it's the middle of winter, so you can't expect cheap cherries in the shops.

You should have Loudly Parented your child by saying 'No, darling, we don't eat those imported out-of-season cherries with their air miles contributing to global warming. We shall eat a locally produced cauliflower instead.'

therehastobemore · 25/01/2012 23:23

good point well made grendels mum - but do you really think my six year old would have have accepted that! To be fair, i have been Shock about the price of cherries for the past year so even in season they seem to be stupidly expensive.

therehastobemore · 25/01/2012 23:24

seriously, it is becoming an obsession, checking the price of cherries Blush and im not even joking!

RatDesPaquerettes · 25/01/2012 23:27

You want to start shopping at Aldi: 10 days ago, cauliflower was £0.59 and not tiny either!

brighthair · 25/01/2012 23:59

I love cauli cheese soup, especially with bits of crispy bacon
I do use frozen value stuff though, tastes the same and cheaper

WetAugust · 26/01/2012 00:36

My rabbits wish to register their annoyance at the price of cauliflowers.

For the last few weeks they have been existing on Savoy cabbages at 59p each instead of cauliflowers treats.

I keep telling them that 'we're all in this together' ....

... but they say if they'd known I was such a tight fisted git they would have objected to me adopting them.

RatDesPaquerettes · 26/01/2012 00:42

WetAugust - if they keep turning up their noses at good Savoy cabbage, you might want to threaten them with the prospect of a rabbit stew. Actually, if I were you, I would not wait too long: nothing worse than a stew made with skinny rabbits; put them in the pot whilst they are still plump! Wink

WetAugust · 26/01/2012 00:53

Poor, poor bunnies.

Even my cat has stopped being given Felix rabbit variety since the rabbits came to live with us.

I didn't want the cat to get the taste for it Grin

RatDesPaquerettes · 26/01/2012 00:59

I have heard cats taste a bit like rabbit... I would plop it in the pot too. Think about the savings you will make on your shopping when you no longer need to buy cat and rabbit food.

The cat and rabbits need to take one for the team in these difficult times.

aldiwhore · 26/01/2012 01:10

Go to Aldi, 69p.

dottygamekeeper · 26/01/2012 01:15

I made a great cauliflower and sesame stir fry yesterday (from HFW Veg Every Day) and our rabbit enjoyed the cauliflower stalk and outer leaves - think I paid for £1.47 for the cauli, but it made a meal for 3 people plus the rabbit! Today the treat for the bunny is celery tops and coriander stalks left over from the veggie stew I made.

Mya2403 · 26/01/2012 04:24

We buy from our green grocer £2 but they are big.

dontellimpike · 26/01/2012 04:59

It is foul and disgusting and has no place on a decent table.

I understand that some people think that about Nutella. In fact, while I miss my DC, I don't miss their Nutella habits.

Cauliflower good, broccoli boring.

Tee2072 · 26/01/2012 07:12

"Or alternatively Shock shop somewhere cheaper like Lidl or Aldo or gasp Asda"

Doesn't Aldo sell very expensive shoes? Hmm

OldMumsy · 26/01/2012 07:59

Cauliflower is great for the Atkins diet, cook and mash with cream for a mashed potato substitute, great for topping fish pie. Nom nom nom.....

CogitoErgoSometimes · 26/01/2012 08:01

YABU... What else can you get for £1.17 these days? Half a cup of coffee at Starbucks? Just over half a MacDonalds Happy Meal? We're happy to fork out large amounts of cash for all kinds of crappy things but, when it comes to something fresh and healthy like a cauli, suddenly it's 'expensive'

SecretNutellaFix · 26/01/2012 08:04

Yet I love broccoli, adore cabbage, sprouts are delicious- it's just cauliflower. There's no flavour to it.

FourThousandHoles · 26/01/2012 08:08

Cauliflower is a may zing in curry.
Trust me, it's not the farmers you're getting done over by.
Cauliflower is incredibly expensive to grow, its a bit flaky and doesn't respond well to weather extremes.

Acumenoop · 26/01/2012 08:25

They're a quid at Ocado at the moment but they are weeny.

RainboweBrite · 26/01/2012 11:31

YABU to eat cauliflower anyway! Ugh! The only thing worse is Brussels sprouts or possibly that incredibly nasty veggie option the losing team did on last night's Masterchef.
