"Oooh that's not FUNNY"

"Oooh your username is RUBBISH"

"Oooh you SWORE"

"Oooooh you used capitals"

"Ooooh you used ... in a thread title"

"Oooh you have not posted in a way that I have deemed acceptable."

Who died and made you owner of the board? AIBU if from now on every time I see a self-appointed board police on patrol to link to and tell them to wind their necks in?

Katie I agree, and I didn't mean that. I just don't get the concept of 'shouting down' on a forum.

BupcakesandCunting · 24/01/2012 16:48

"I think that if a thread is (in your opinion) in terrible taste or designed to bully rather than be funny, then it's perfectly fine to say 'this isn't funny' etc. Otherwise it's all a bit 'anything goes' isn't it? And it doesn't imo."

Yes absolutely. Like I said earlier, if posters are being offensive twats (this covers bullying) then it is fine to stand and say so.

I suppose lots of people all having a go. A disproportionate response.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 16:49

words on a screen is bollocks, yes.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 16:50

That was to Morris and should have had question marks. Oops

Fillybuster · 24/01/2012 16:50

Thanks Buppy - I know it wasn't your intention to cause offence, and tbh I took a long deep breath before I wrote my post, then deleted it, then thought 'sod it', re-typed and posted.

I flagged this issue because it isn't the first time, and I really do believe that the more phrases like 'gestapo' or 'nazi' are used in non-serious contexts, the less power/truth we start to ascribe to the history of those phrases.

Aitch - Hmm I still want to believe that MN is pretty good at communal space behaviour despite recent demonstrations to the contrary

Wahx3 - I think I preferred the cheese....

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 24/01/2012 16:50

Pagwatch I saw that comment to you too and it was unnecessary and horrible.

BupcakesandCunting · 24/01/2012 16:50

Oh did I loopy? Blush

I was sure I hadn't! Perhaps in my brain I was saying "type out abbreviated name to convey jokey tone" and ended up doing the exact opposite through sheer cackhandedness

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 24/01/2012 16:51

Kate
I was quite unconcerned and happy to respond accordingly. But slapping people who may be new or tentaive in the posting is just being an arse isn't it?

If someone rocks up and say something offensive and aggressive I don't care. But just seeking a reason to attack is awful

YY Pag. I think some folk have ishoos and it spills out on the boards. A bit more tackling at the time from everyone would do no harm.

There are some great people on here - truly kind and helpful as well as the funny ones and it is a shame when people get upset because someone doesn't know how to behave in public.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 16:57

no, filly, we could be much more considerate of each other's sensitivities on here, and some purposefully aren't and they know it. which is why this thread rather baffles me... Grin

ViviPru · 24/01/2012 17:01

Bit baffled by the observation of 'unfunny swearing'. Genuinely can't recollect instances of this or even what it actually means.

Rational · 24/01/2012 17:03

I always piss people off on here. They don't like my style, I'm too direct and I won't back down when the pack gathers. I've been called names and told to fuck off numerous times just because I often disagree with the general consensus. Occasionally someone pops in to say they agree with me and then fuck off and leave me to it.

Meh, bring it on I say. I don't purposely inflame so I'm not for backing down.

WorraLiberty · 24/01/2012 17:05

I could have written that post myself Rational

Hi all,

Wink

We do have newbies (and oldies) who are unaware of the Talk guidelines and the general rooles from swearing to libellous posts.

All of the information is linked to at the top of Talk it is always good to have a re-read once and a while or link to folks who are new and just finding their feet.

Here is our Getting started guide and our MNetiquette

We don't have many rooles but we do ask that folks respect one another as a bare minimum and please do report anything to us that you feel breaks our Talk guidelines - oh and swear as much as you like but don't personally attack.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 17:06

Any new on the anti-bullying stuff Rebecca?

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2012 17:07

Sorry, I don't for a minute think that the content of posts is just words. I have had my feelings hurt on forums, like most people I guess.

My point was about piling on/ shouting down.

It's a pointless complaint imo - if twenty people all think the same thing then they have as much right to air their views as any person with a lone pov has.

Like on this thread, most people agree with OP, v strongly. Are they piling on, shouting down or bullying?

madhairday · 24/01/2012 17:07

I think you're nice, Rational Wink Grin

Rational · 24/01/2012 17:10

Aw thanks fluffy, I like you too Wink

Rational · 24/01/2012 17:11

No one understands me! Waaaaah! Sad

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 17:11

I get you Morris. I do think though that the manner in which it's done matters. A many hundred word rant about a spelling mistake is disproportionate for example.

20 polite and respectful posts is fine. 20 posts name calling and bitching is not.

mrstiredandconfused · 24/01/2012 17:12

I agree wholeheartedly with the "words on a screen is bollocks" brigade. As someone who lurked for years because I wasn't brave enough to post I can honestly say it's pretty intimidating to think of incurring the wrath of some posters of seemingly innocent threads. That's why I started on chat/ craft and look at how that turned out!

And yes, I can be very sensitive at times Sad
