"Oooh that's not FUNNY"

"Oooh your username is RUBBISH"

"Oooh you SWORE"

"Oooooh you used capitals"

"Ooooh you used ... in a thread title"

"Oooh you have not posted in a way that I have deemed acceptable."

Who died and made you owner of the board? AIBU if from now on every time I see a self-appointed board police on patrol to link to and tell them to wind their necks in?

@KatieMiddleton

Any new on the anti-bullying stuff Rebecca?

Hi Katie,

We think that bullying is fairly well covered in the guidelines in the sense that we do not allow personal attacks against individuals. If you feel that anyone is being targeted then please do report it to us and we will take a look.

Pagwatch · 24/01/2012 17:16

I agree with you Morris but only to an extent.

Lots of times I have seen someone who is holding a minority view on a thread start trying to characterise that majority response as a gang. A couple of times I have been accused of being part of a gang or clique when I have not known anyone else on the thread. I think sometimes it is just a group of people who all quite independently think one poster is being a twat. But the 'you gang of bullies' is easier to say than to reconsider that maybe you are just being an arse.
The lone voice of reason is a much easier way to see oneself than total arse with objectionable views.

But there is pilling in too and it is horrible. A few start saying 'no, that is daft' after which a load of posters smell blood and up the insults. 'you sound deranged' and 'i feel sorry for your dc' are often just a few posts in.

I hate that. Deliberately being more personally offensive than the previous poster whilst adding nothing to the debate is not nice

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2012 17:16

Rational, that surprises me. I love MN because most people on it are so direct. I've never seen anybody ganged up on just because they don't agree with the consensus, but if people disagree with the content of what you say then they have every right to post why.

Moominsarescary · 24/01/2012 17:20

I like wind your neck in

piratecat · 24/01/2012 17:22

it used to be worse when the mouldies ruled.

loopylou6 · 24/01/2012 17:22

GrinRebeccamumsnet I'm assuming your rules rooles mistake was on purpose? Wink

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2012 17:22

Agreed pagwatch. And I dare say some people take courage from seeing a well known user name throwing some choice words to get vocal themselves. It can escalate and turn way ott.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 17:25

I sent you something the other day Rebecca (I think it was you? The trouble is you all have very similar posting names at MNHQ Wink).

I think some people are not posting a point of view or why the hold an opinion which skirts round the personal attack stuff but adds nothing constructive. Bullying really.

It is not common but it is happening more often and certain posters just seem to come onto threads to be unpleasant. Not nice.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 17:26

that's a good point, Morris. likewise if a pile of people agree with you, does that give you a mandate to ignore those who don't and continue with that behaviour?

i am thinking, btw, of the swearie names discussions, where the majority who respond to the 'mnhq has asked me to change my name because they are getting complaints' are broadly outraged that such an infringement of personal liberty might take place.

cool, says the OP, i know that it upsets people but consider my desire to do it more important, and look, i've got backup. now it so happens that i've never understood that line of thinking, as i think of this as much more of a communal space, where sensitivities should be made room for.

the liberty to offend must mean liberty for all. the flip side will be that if someone thinks you should have posted in Products when you wanted to post in Chat, you've got to suck it up.

Here is mostly an enjoyable place to be, great for advice and company, there are some knob heads to seem to take pleasure in insulting others, but I always think they must have really sad lives so they enjoy trying to make themselves feel important.

Sad really Innit.

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/01/2012 17:28

Paggy's got it.

A minority view will prompt a lot of negative responses and as Mumsnet is a huge forum with some famously straight talking members then some of those responses will be very blunt (and I agree sometimes unnecessarily mean and hectoring).

But just because a lot of people disagree with you, doesn't mean you are being bullied. It just means that a lot of people disagree with you.

I tend not to post on threads that have been going a long time and have loads of replies for this very reason. If I happen to post along the same lines as a poster I once said hello to on another thread then I might be accused of being in a bullying clique. Which is tiresome.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 17:28

Wot Maryz said. That's what I was trying to say about bullying and why I reported the posts I saw the other day.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 17:30

but unless you actually poll every MNer any view expressed will always be a minority view. the squeakiest wheels on here get the oil.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 17:31

A poll you say?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 17:37

oooh, cool. was it you getting a kicking off the stepmums as well?

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2012 17:38

If we're not allowed to troll hunt then I say no to a bully hunt.

Only because I've seen so many internet forum users say they're being bullied when lots of people disagree with them.

If anybody does feel they're being bullied they should tell hq, who can take steps if needed.

wahwahwah · 24/01/2012 17:39
