"Oooh that's not FUNNY"

"Oooh your username is RUBBISH"

"Oooh you SWORE"

"Oooooh you used capitals"

"Ooooh you used ... in a thread title"

"Oooh you have not posted in a way that I have deemed acceptable."

Who died and made you owner of the board? AIBU if from now on every time I see a self-appointed board police on patrol to link to and tell them to wind their necks in?

crikey, glad I ran out of time to make the lemon hand scrub before xmas then. I was planning to and everything....

Buppy - YANBU except......

...

I take exception to the casual use of words like Gestapo and Nazi in this context. I absolutely understand what you're trying to say, and applaud the sentiments expressed absolutely, and wouldn't have been at all offended by "Thread Police", for example.

But 'Gestapo'. And elsewhere, the use of 'Nazi' (by others, not Buppy, I think)?

I find the casual use of these terms, in this context, quite offensive and upsetting. (Please note that I very rarely take offence to anything at all on MN).

A large part of my family were killed, in pretty disgusting ways, as a result of activity by the Gestapo and the Nazis.

These might be appropriate terms to use if we were discussing Syria's use of secret police (in which we might choose to liken their behaviour to that of the Gestapo) or discussing the blind loyalty shown to some other political leader espousing extreme right wing opinions (for which insert Nazi), but the casual application of these terms to discuss MN posting habits is (imo) derogatory and dismissive to those of us to whom those words reference serious global events.

Aitch has it. YABU.

How can anybody shout anybody down on a forum where all we have is words on a screen?

I have given up on some interesting looking OPs because I can't face reading a long post with no paras. I don't consider myself the police, the gestapo, or any other kind of authority, but as you said it's a public forum.

I'd like to be able to post what I like without being called a cunt.

No good ever comes out of making a jokey comment around here. One lovely lady threatened to batter me. Oh she did not know with whom she was tangling...

loopylou6 · 24/01/2012 16:41

Grin Ah ok, I must of been feeling sensitive yesterday.

I have noticed a bit more speed slapdowns tbh.
There seems to be a tendency to read an op and find a flaw with it as a kind of badge of honour.
I posted a query about facebook a few days ago and honest to god it was 10 seconds between explaining a brewing situation from which I was trying to protect my mother and some snarky fucker posting "oh fgs say will you all just get off facebook Hmm'

It isn't clever to look for issues to pick on. If they are there then fair enough but the endless 'how can I sneer at this post as quickly as possible' is tiresome.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 16:41

i think some names are particularly shite at the moment and i think there is far too much unfunny swearing on here now. if i go on those threads and agree with those people am i a member of the gestapo?

Why would "your link doesn't work" be annoying? Genuinely confused by a post earlier on in the thread.

If you post a link, it is because you want other people to follow it. If other people cannot follow it, then your Grand Plan has failed. Thus, surely, it is helpful for someone to let you know?

It would make more sense to me if someone started a "AIBU to think the shop assistant shouldn't have given me my change back" thread. I'm that confused.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/01/2012 16:44

watch out, fillybuster, you'll get accused of being a member of the gestapo gestapo... sensitivity to what others might feel about behaviour in a communal space is not high on this agenda.

I think that if a thread is (in your opinion) in terrible taste or designed to bully rather than be funny, then it's perfectly fine to say 'this isn't funny' etc. Otherwise it's all a bit 'anything goes' isn't it? And it doesn't imo.

The 'we've done this before' is tiresome though.

wahwahwah · 24/01/2012 16:44

Where's filly? She is my cheese buddy.

HueyMorganismyboyfriend · 24/01/2012 16:45

Think I will fail the MN entrance exam too myncichips

BupcakesandCunting · 24/01/2012 16:45

"How can anybody shout anybody down on a forum where all we have is words on a screen?"

I have seen it many a time. I don't agree with the "words on a screen" sentiment, either. Words on a screen can be just as hurtful as words from a mouth, IMO.

Sorry Fili if I have offended you with Gestapo/Hitler. Wasn't my intention. :(

I saw that Pag. it was nasty. I was going to post but the thread had moved on and it wasn't worth going over old ground.

The worst thing I saw recently was a poster who should know better because she has been around long enough taking the piss out of a new poster who was asking about piercing a baby's ears in style and beauty. It was a horrid, nasty piss take of text speak.

Again the thread had moved on but that poor newbie Sad

loopylou6 · 24/01/2012 16:45

Actually, I'll have that chocolate back please, I've just caught up on that thread and you did use my full name...

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 16:46

Words on a screen is bollocks. There is a person at the end of those words and some (me included) would do well to remember that.

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2012 16:46

Agree re unfunny swearing. It's like a poorly scripted teen movie getting cheap laughs from obscenity in the absence of wit or originality.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended by the words, I use them myself sometimes. It's just the relentlessness of it I guess.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 16:48

Sorry Maryz Blush
