What happened in Kano over the weekend is not even on the front pages of the so called international news websites like the BBC. I've had to search for any reporting on it.

Can you imagine if such a thing had happened to people in a rich country?

I think it's really sad that Africans dying isn't considered newsworthy. Are we really that racist?

The lady asked me if I had any problems. If my son went to private school and if his life was all mapped out nicely. She also infered (implied - you decide) that I lived a sheltered life and was unlikely to be affected by immigration and my son would walk into a job and mine (if I had one) was safe.

I responded with an brief explaination of my actual circumstances and that a sarcastic remark regarding my children being at an obvious advantage because they were brown.

Then you went all squirrily and started ranting about it being disgusting mentioning the colour of my children's skin.

And it sort of went downhill from there.

I get what you're trying to say wannabe, but I think this statement is problematic, because of the way Africa is almost always stereotyped as a continent of war, famine or exotic animals. For the majority of Africans, their lives have very little to do with violence, but that picture rarely gets portrayed.

I can't imagine people arguing "During the troubles in Northern-Ireland, violence was almost a way of life" because we're aware that it was a minority who were involved in the violence and that their culture is much much more than that - I think the same should apply to africa.

Can I continue to reiterate that I wish you would stop bombarding me personally with your family history.

Because someone has an opinion based on anecdotal evidence where they live it doesn't make them a racist.

Though sadly I have a child who is not only a darker shade of pale (in fact distinctly beige with funny forrin eyes) and is an immigrant to boot

I've been reported for being an aggressive racist who isn't complying with the "Find a racist tonight" squad, and keeping my bumcheeks together.
