to think applying make-up on the train is a bit bleurgh?

I hate the morning commute and I'm always stuck opposite the person who is applying make-up on the train. It really makes my teeth itch and I can't quite explain why. I wish I had a better word than "bleurgh" but I don't. I really dislike seeing it.

My friends inform me that they wish they had the skill to do make-up on the train because it saves time.

Perhaps I'm just a cranky bitch in the morning. Or jealous because I'd poke myself in the eye if I tried to put on eye liner on the train!

I can't do it on the move. I'm quite impressed with their mad skillz!

snuffaluffagus · 19/01/2012 11:40

Unless they're spraying powder over people I don't see how it would effect you. I couldn't do it because I prefer to wash my hands when I'm done and have a steady mirror etc.. I've been known to apply blusher or something though.

NinkyNonker · 19/01/2012 11:41

It isn't 'the done thing', my Granny would be horrified. Grin

I would happily check my appearance on the train, maybe put some lip gloss or similar on but that'd be it.

I am quite old fashioned though.

TubbyDuffs · 19/01/2012 11:42

If it were a choice of getting on train with no makeup and applying on said train or standing on the platform with a full face of makeup having missed said train, I know which one I'd pick.

crashdoll · 19/01/2012 11:42

It doesn't affect me. Just seeing it is one those things that makes me think "do it at home"!

YABU - I've often done makeup on the train, someday's it's simply essential.

seniortoeslately · 19/01/2012 11:44

I think it's a good idea - Thomas would certainly look better with a bit of blusher.

SmethwickBelle · 19/01/2012 11:46

I've done it Grin or should that be Shock and I'd say there are others more worthy of your ire; may I suggest the apple crunchers, yoghurt slurpers, banana munchers, snorers, coughers, sniffers and my least favourite, the CRISP EATERS. At least applying yoghurt doesn't make an irritating noise or a smell.

SmethwickBelle · 19/01/2012 11:46

applying make-up even.

Haziedoll · 19/01/2012 11:49

I know how you feel. I really hate watching people do it.

I know I am being unreasonable but it just really irritates me.

deliciousdevilwoman · 19/01/2012 11:50

Always used to do it on my daily train commute. My routine was do make up, read the paper and have a coffee-even if I didn't manage to bag a seat :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/01/2012 11:51

I did it in the summer when I was commuting from Gloucester to London every day, I had to get the 6.10 train and didn't get home until 9.

I did it for months and Iwould do anything for an extra 10 minutes in bed. So would go on the train barefaced, find a quiet carriage (was at the start of a line so very quiet train at that time), wait til the train started and put make up on whilst using the train window as a mirror.

I wouldn't do it on a busy train, or on the tube tbh. But I wouldn't judge anyone who did do it (watched loads of girls do it on the train, is quite fascinating, including application of falsh eyelashes!)

scarletforya · 19/01/2012 11:53

My sister does it but she has to be up at some unGodly hour to get the kids to creche before a long commute to work. She just doesn't have time at home and her job requires it. She's pretty discreet though. Sometimes needs must and all that.

heyannie · 19/01/2012 11:54

I don't see a problem with it, I have heard many an argument along the lines of "well would it be ok if a man started shaving on the train?" which to me is totally different. There is no removal of body bits with makeup removal, it's the same as putting handcream on. If I don't want to watch them I just look out the window.

I did see one woman on the train whip out a hand mirror with lights, and some tweezers, and start plucking her eyebrows. That was a step too far.

Ephiny · 19/01/2012 12:00

Agree with heyannie - I don't mind people applying makeup, but am a bit Hmm at plucking eyebrows or filing nails or even brushing hair, that doesn't seem very nice in a confined space with lots of people. Same for spraying of perfume or hair products.

There are many things you can get annoyed by on public transport though, generally if something isn't really affecting you it's easiest to just ignore it!

MoreBeta · 19/01/2012 12:00

It is bleeeeuuuurgh!

If you don't stop doing it and brushing your hair as well then I'm going to start taking my shaving kit and nasal hair clippers on the train.

That'll learn you!

EnjoyResponsibly · 19/01/2012 12:00

Done it. Can't see what's wrong TBH. Constructive use of time as I see it.

Woman sitting diagonally opposite me one day in the summer put her feet on the seat next to me. she was wearing tatty flip flops, had hideous nails, yellow hard skin and her plates stank. Now that is BU. Sharp words were had in a totally non passive aggressive way.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 19/01/2012 12:03

I find it 'bleurgh' as well but struggle to pinpoint why I don't like it.
I think it might be because it's a very personal thing which is done in a very public way, it just seems a bit undignified.
I think for the sake of 10 minutes it's much nicer to leave the house ready to face the day rather than in a bit of a state trying to apply mascara in a tube carriage full of people.

NB I might also be slightly biased because some complete fuckwit once spilt their liquid foundation all over my coat Angry

Enidcoleslaw · 19/01/2012 12:04

I love watching people putting make up on on the train! I find it impossible not to watch, it's something to do with watching someone transform how they look, it seems like such a private thing and all the little rituals of it. I find it totally fascinating.

I probably put people off doing it with my inability to not watch though, now I think about it.

SunRaysthruClouds · 19/01/2012 12:04

I quite agree with you OP, it annoys me, even if there is no reason to be annoyed. But then I don't know why people wear make up - probably conditioned by the patriarchy I guess.

what about people who squirt perfume which pervades the whole carriage with its pong. grrrr.

NinkyNonker · 19/01/2012 12:05

I have done it on the ferry before. Very different seat layout so no-one could see, and it was early!

FellatioNelsonsDog · 19/01/2012 12:07

I agree - it's an oddly personal thing that is best done in private. I have been forced to do it on the train once or twice out of necessity/running late for something (though not during morning rush hour!) and I do feel very uncomfortable - not to mention it's bloody difficult to do a good job with a tiny mirror and everything spilling off your lap.

AnaisB · 19/01/2012 12:09

I like watching people put make-up on. Everyone does it a bit differently and I find it hard not to stare. I've done it occasionally when in a rush, but I appreciate it's not the done thing. I also eat (non smelly) food on the train and, at a push, I've changed nappies. I do not have long and loud telephone conversations, listen to loud music, or fail to move down the carriage to make room - so I'm not all bad.

Anchorwoman · 19/01/2012 12:12

I do makeup on the bus most mornings - usually eyeliner, mascara and a bit of 'rouge' so a very quick fix. I live at the start of the bus route so often one of the first on.

I will do ANYTHING for extra time in the morning and also have to push DS to his childminder then walk to bus stop, so if pouring with rain anything applied earlier that morning is running down my face by that time.

Mouth breathers, projectile coughers and and people who constantly sniff/snort/hack are the ones to avoid, not those of us who merely wish to look less like they have only had 3 hours sleep that night. My morning bus is like the tuberculoses express some days, it should have a health warning on it.

RainboweBrite · 19/01/2012 12:18

YABU. Far more important to have the extra 10 minutes in bed. People shouldn't care what some strangers on the train think. I have just had to listen to some young fellows swearing constantly.. for 10 minutes on the train; now that really made my teeth itch!
