to think applying make-up on the train is a bit bleurgh?

I hate the morning commute and I'm always stuck opposite the person who is applying make-up on the train. It really makes my teeth itch and I can't quite explain why. I wish I had a better word than "bleurgh" but I don't. I really dislike seeing it.

My friends inform me that they wish they had the skill to do make-up on the train because it saves time.

Perhaps I'm just a cranky bitch in the morning. Or jealous because I'd poke myself in the eye if I tried to put on eye liner on the train!

Have to admit that although I don't object to it, I wouldn't do it personally, simply because I cannot put mascara on without doing a big O shape with my mouth and I know that I would look like a twonk.

MinesaBottle · 19/01/2012 12:41

It's better than putting nail varnish on on the tube which I've also seen - the smell!!! Bleurgh.

I do worry that someone will gouge her eye out with her mascara wand though if the train stops suddenly or something. Shock

It is bad manners to put on make up in public anywhere (like eating in the street). The woman on the train ought to go to the washroom to do it. It's just as bad seeing women in public who've washed their hair but not dried it. They smell like wet dogs.

Commercialism has promoted bad manners so keenly that we see people eating (even in restaurants) with their mouths open, speaking with their mouths full, people yawning without covering their mouths, coughing without covering their mouths (you can see that in dramas on the television), eating with their fingers when they have cutlery in front of them .................................................... I could go on. I just try to set an example by doing things 'properly'.

Put makeup of any sort - even lipstick - in a washroom. Why can't these women wait and use the washroom at work?

Kayano · 19/01/2012 12:51

I can do full face on train/ bus/ whereever lol Wink

secretary · 19/01/2012 12:52

I do it sometimes weekly. Following previous rants on here about it, I learned that eyeliner is perfectly possible. I recently achieved it

OhdearNigel · 19/01/2012 13:00

Before I go to work I have to do packed lunches, put on washing, tidy up, change cat litter and get DD ready for nursery/nanna. So yes, I put my makeup on the train. If that offends anyone tough shit. At least I don't make any noise doing it

SlightlyJaded · 19/01/2012 13:13

Have had to do it once or twice and was really self conscious (although I too am fascinated by watching other people and like the 'reveal' when they've finished).

There need to guidelines in place. These should be clearly posted on the tube or train walls along with the tube/train etiquette ones (e.g No eye contact with other passengers' etc).

I would suggest:

The application of blusher, eyeshadow, lip gloss, permitted
The application of eyeliner and mascara will be tolerated between 7am and 9am
The application of foundation, lip liner, cover up, loose powder and concealer is banned
Eyelash curling is strictly forbidden as is hair brushing and will incur and on the spot fine.

pictish · 19/01/2012 13:15

Yabu. People can do what they like so long as it's not affecting others.

If you don't like looking at it, then don't. Problem solved!

pictish · 19/01/2012 13:15

Rule Brittania

Why is it bad manners? Explain please?

NorthernWreck · 19/01/2012 13:27

Do it all the time, and I like watching it too. I sometimes get into conversations about the merits of various products with people doing it!

babysbreath · 19/01/2012 13:33

Oh I love watching people put their make up on in the morning.

I like to see how they apply their make up.
See them transform themselves.
Also, see what products and brands they use.

Kayano · 19/01/2012 13:34

I judge only those who use sponge tipped eyeshadow applicators. How common Wink

My god, buy a proper brush!

CamperFan · 19/01/2012 13:36

That's nothing, OP. My DH saw a woman flossing her teeth on the train the other day. Actually makes me want to throw up when I think about it!

SarahBumBarer · 19/01/2012 13:37

Pictish why is eating peas off your knife (or even up-ended fork) bad manners? I'm not sure that there are many reasons for why some things are considered bad manners or poor etiquette. Make-up is just part of the etiquette that matters of personal hygiene should be conducted in private. It does not bother me massively but I will admit to feeling a bit bleurgh when people put their lipstick/lip gloss back on at the dinner table when they have finished eating.

CamperFan · 19/01/2012 13:37

Rule Brittania, I don't see how applying make up in public is rude, what an odd thing to say. Do men with wet hair smell like dog? Or is it just women?

NorthernWreck · 19/01/2012 13:38

Kayano, I am ashamed to say I can only use those!
I don't know what I am doing with brushes.

SlightlyJaded · 19/01/2012 13:42

Kayano I judge people who use the little square brush that came with the blusher. Get a proper brush or YOU WILL GET STRIPES ON YOUR CHEEKS

bettybat · 19/01/2012 13:42

I do it every single day on the First Capital Connect train into Farringdon....I must be one of those people that everyone hates Blush

I don't know if it's rude or not. Maybe it is. I love watching other women do it - there's something so mesmerising about it, something so relaxing about watching that I have to stop myself from staring. It never occurred to me it would incite such negativity in other people. Must try harder to be considerate.

I try not to take up much space - you know, elbows in for mascara, no flicking power or blusher on the shoulder of my fellow passenger. I don't do my hairor listen to loud, tinny music. I don't add perfume and my make up is kind of basic - powder, eye shadow, bit of liner, blusher, lip gloss. I wouldn't even know how to do all the fancy, other make up stuff.

My apologies to all the people who hate it. I would go into the ladies but generally, FCC toilets are a health hazard.

FreudianSlipper · 19/01/2012 13:43

i used to often apply the finishing touches to my make up on the train or tube

i do in the car too when stuck in traffic

well if it bothers you it bothers you not really much i can say on that

LadySybilDeChocolate · 19/01/2012 13:44

Nail polish is a no-no. I've seen a fair amount of women putting on nail polish and it makes the carriage smell. Please don't do this.

pictish · 19/01/2012 13:48

Make-up is just part of the etiquette that matters of personal hygiene should be conducted in private.

Says who?

ExitPursuedByaBear · 19/01/2012 13:49

I have often done this, but following a thread on here a while ago I now do it self consciously.

But I am not often on the train.

Instead, I do my make up in the car whilst stationary at the lights, for which I belive I could be fined.....

JanetPlanet · 19/01/2012 13:55

I apply my makeup on the train probably once a week. I can do liquid liner on a moving train no probs. I'm interested to know why people are offended. Seems so old fashioned that people would have a problem with it, like something my nan would have said. I also never dry my hair, it's curly and dries naturally, my hair is my best asset, it's in fabulous condition and smells like Aveda Be Curly (which is brilliant for curly hair btw). So I'm not getting up an hour early to dry my hair and end up looking like Ange from Eastenders just so your teeth don't itch.
