to think applying make-up on the train is a bit bleurgh?

I hate the morning commute and I'm always stuck opposite the person who is applying make-up on the train. It really makes my teeth itch and I can't quite explain why. I wish I had a better word than "bleurgh" but I don't. I really dislike seeing it.

My friends inform me that they wish they had the skill to do make-up on the train because it saves time.

Perhaps I'm just a cranky bitch in the morning. Or jealous because I'd poke myself in the eye if I tried to put on eye liner on the train!

A number of etiquette books - does it matter? Do you care what etiquette books say? My point was simply that "why" is an odd question (in my view). Why is anything considered good or bad manners other than that some people may find it offensive.

pictish · 19/01/2012 15:17

Well, I think in this case 'some people' should find something else to be offended about.

Sheesh!

porcamiseria · 19/01/2012 15:29

yabu

eating is one thing, but just look away

voscar · 19/01/2012 17:28

I commute an hour each way and tend to drive these days but used to have a two hour train each way and tbh the only thing that irritates me is invasion of personal space.

Make your phone calls - I'm gonna listen!
Put on make up - I'll watch!
Eat - couldn't care less

I've seen make up applied, eye brows plucked, fake tan applied, hair brushed, nails polished, meals eaten, throwing up, beer drunk, arguments had, been preached to, snoring sleepers, random snoggers. (I may or may not be guilty of some or all of the above - subject to levels of alcohol consumed)

To be honest - it's public, and as long as you accept that you make yourself public property and you are not doing anything illegal or harming anyone I don't see the issue.

RainboweBrite · 19/01/2012 18:02

It's just as bad seeing women in public who've washed their hair but not dried it. They smell like wet dogs.

What on earth is wrong with going out with wet hair in public???? What about those of us who don't own a hairdryer? For goodness sake, get over yourself!

racingheart · 19/01/2012 18:16

YABU. If you don't like it sit somewhere else or get out a book.

AIBU to love watching other women put make up on on the train? I was transfixed by a woman recently who got on looking like she'd slept in a hedge and got off looking like a chic Parisian. I was mesmerised. If I'd filmed it on YouTube I'd be rich by now.

rainbow women who haven't dried their wet hair smell like shampoo not wet dogs. Find something more important to care about.

RainboweBrite · 19/01/2012 18:18

Racingheart, I'm not the one who cares about it!

Read my post properly and you will see I don't even own a hairdryer!

TwoStepsBack · 19/01/2012 18:32

I'm actually rather impressed by anyone who can apply make-up on the move and can understand why those with a long commute/early start do it.

I used to work with a woman who finished getting ready at work. Clocked in early to get the flexi-time, ate some weetabix whilst her curling tongs heated up, applied make-up and curled her hair at her desk. An hour or so later she might decide to actually do some work.

Now that's more offensive to me than if she had got ready on the train.

catgirl1976 · 19/01/2012 19:21

Given, if I travel standard class there is ALWAYS someone drinking cans of Special Brew REGARDLESS of the time of day I find this a long way down the list of things that annoy me on trains.

Plus I have done it myself - not full make up, but if I am travelling to London for a meeting will touch up my make up before getting to the station as after a couple of hours it needs it. Don't think its bleurgh.

moaninlisa · 19/01/2012 19:31

Why would anyone CARE?

pictish · 19/01/2012 19:32

I have no idea!

crashdoll · 19/01/2012 20:52

Why would anyone care? Well, surely you could say that about most trivial things on AIBU. Thank you for your useful input though.

mmm have had to do that a couple of times not easy but.....a lot easier than doing it on a coach lol lighten up no ones changing there knickers just putting there make up on

crashdoll · 19/01/2012 20:57

I must just be really grumpy and intolerant in the morning. Grin

EggInABap · 19/01/2012 21:40

I don't CARE...... Not enough to let it bother me much, however I do think it's pretty trampy. I don't buy the whole 'I don't have time in the morning' I know plenty of people including myself who manage it with chaos of getting kids ready/the school run/getting the tube to work.

Along with eating on the tube (which I detest- really is no excuse for being such a glutton you can't wait half hour) I feel it is very unhygienic. I have seen some horrors in my time, joys of the central line (a homeless man crapping on the floor, sexual acts). You have no idea of the filth on a tube that you cannot see- for that reason I wouldn't even open my very expensive make up on the tube.

thepeoplesprincess · 19/01/2012 21:49

Eurgh. I couldn't do it. There's nowt classy about Polyfilla-ing over your spots in front of 50 bored businessmen.

And plucking eyebrows really really is going too far.

TwoStepsBack · 19/01/2012 21:51

Would waxing your 'tache be okay though?

Grin
wahwah1270 · 19/01/2012 21:54

Yabu I do it every day out of necessity. I gave to bus dd to nursery and then get dlr to work. I work a 50 odd hour week travel endlessly around London in circles manage a home etc and quite frankly I need that extra 10 mind in bed.

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 19/01/2012 21:59

what about pulling a kirbie grip out your hair and pulling wax out your ears?

Or applying foundation to a boob spot?

black head pore strip? Wink

I used to always do make up on the bus if I had slept in. I was good at judging when I could do my eyeliner - when just stopped at traffic lights - couldnt do them if you arrived at a red set - too much risk, but a set that stopped you would be safe for 30sec at least

TwoStepsBack · 19/01/2012 22:03

giraffes you must have been the only passenger who was happy to see a red light Grin

Speed bumps must be a bit of a nightmare though

stealthsquiggle · 19/01/2012 22:04

well I got on the train this morning with possibly wet hair (was certainly wet when I got in the car) and no make up on. We are talking intercity, not standing-room-only commuter train. I do not either smell like wet dog - and I brushed my hair and did my make-up on the train because my alarm already went off at something-beginning-with-4am and I am not going to get up even earlier because of random strangers' hang-ups.

Rollergirl1 · 19/01/2012 22:41

I went through a stage of having to do it because I didn't have time to do at home. Actually I used to do concealer/powder/blusher bit at home and just did eye-liner, mascara and lip-gloss on train. I am another one that actually finds it quite mesmerising watching someone do the whole works on the train. Doing your make-up becomes such a ritual and it's interesting to see how other women do it.

The whole thing about wet hair is ridiculous. Does the poster object to people being rained on too?

JanetPlanet · 20/01/2012 06:31

Egginabap if it makes you feel any better I use wet wipes and alcohol gel to clean my hands first.

TartyMcFarty · 20/01/2012 06:40

A new colleague touches up her make-up in the staffroom at breK. I find it uncomfortable to watch TBH.

TartyMcFarty · 20/01/2012 06:41

Oh, I mean break!
