to hate being called 'a star' at work?

I am a grown up. I do my job for love (and money) I am not doing anything out of the ordinary, I just try to be as fair and helpful as I can be. I think it's called being a team player! Grin It's no big deal.

So, why, in the name of god, do people insist on saying, 'oh thanks, you're a star!' ? They say it over the radio, for the whole sodding school to hear too! One of these days I'm going to have to comment. It's driving me nuts!

I am 40 something years old fgs! I am not one of the students in our school. I am not a bloody star! 6 year olds are stars - 40 somethings are not!

There endeth the rant - as you were! Grin

Is it the word or phrase itself you don't like, or the fact it was broadcast?

I think it's nice.

lukewarm · 18/01/2012 19:26

Having a sensitive day?!

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2012 19:27

I am always telling people they are a star if they have helped me. Blush

WellBlowMeDown · 18/01/2012 19:28

People generally like praise and recognition. Maybe they got you wrong. Talk to them but I do think it's a lovely compliment.

MaureenMLove · 18/01/2012 19:29

Really? Maybe it's the way they say it. I'm not the only one at school who doesn't warm to the expression!

I think it's just one of those - harmless - sayings that people use now and then.
I'd rather be called a star than a useless piece of shit. Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 18/01/2012 19:33

what would you rather I call you when you do something over and above
or shall I be a grumpy mare back

'Thank you for going out the back and finding what I needed Mr Shop assistant you did an excellent job' doesn't sound v sincere. Can I keep 'You're a star' for non-work situations?

squeakytoy · 18/01/2012 19:37

Is it something that the kids hear too. Perhaps they think that it will make them also know you have done something well.

YAB a bit precious.

MaureenMLove · 18/01/2012 19:37

I am not the least bit grumpy! I don't need anyone to say 'you're a star'. I'm just doing exactly what I'm paid to do.

Maybe I do have a problem with people paying me compliments, who knows. I just find it odd that one minute a teacher is telling a yr7 kid they are a star, for putting the books out or picking his pencil up of the floor and then she's telling me in the same manner that I'm a star!

Oh well, clearly IABU, but I'm still not a grumpy moo! Grin

Thank you for helping me see the error of my ways - you are all stars! WinkGrin

It's better than the 'good girl' I get from a manager six months younger than me and we are both mid forties! Hmm

storminabuttercup · 18/01/2012 19:42

I think it's nice, shows you are appreciated! I've done many roles for my company (on shit basic pay) as secondments so technically above and beyond, I've never really been made to feel useful. I've now gone back to my basic role (I'm a sales person) and our area manager sends emails out thanking the 'top performers' I get ever so proud when I'm on it! Grin

southeastastra · 18/01/2012 19:42

am with you op! it sounds really wanky and insincere to me Grin

oooh you're a starrrrr!!!!

mothmagnet · 18/01/2012 19:43

Yanbu, I hate it at work too, it's usually said with the least sincerity.

I always moan about it Grin Once ds had done a bad thing so I took something away, then relented and gave it back.
He said 'oh mum, you're a star... I know you hate that, but you are one' (head on one side, looked winsome, then grabbed his thing and legged it) nice memory though Smile

mothmagnet · 18/01/2012 19:44

and yes boaty, barf to 'good girl' as well

yellowraincoat · 18/01/2012 19:44

My mum complains about this as well. They are just being nice, they're showing they appreciate you.

Yes, the phrase is a bit twee, but considering my bosses never say anything positive about our performance, you should be glad.

MaureenMLove · 18/01/2012 19:44

LOL! Thank you SEA - at last! Someone who gets me! Grin

piprabbit · 18/01/2012 19:46

People actually appreciate what you do? And tell you so? How very dare they.

Much better for them to just ignore, ignore, ignore.

You should try being in my workplace and being called a "lovely little star", slightly odd when you consider that I am, ahem, in my fifth decade. However it's certainly better than many another name so I don't mind too much, really.
