Have you ever seen a thread end just after someone has written 'Gavel' or 'End of.'?

I realise some people do it ironically, but many don't.

I like as it seems to be said in a funny way.

'End of' makes me Angry though. FFS it is end of STORY. Story, people, come on, it's only one extra word! Use it! (I don't actually like the phrase 'end of story' much either, TBH, it's just better than 'end of')

Miette · 18/01/2012 09:19

I like gavel.

BelfastBloke · 18/01/2012 09:19

Someone asked if I like 'HTH'. Yeah I do. It's often used sarcastically, which I thoroughly enjoy.

I also like when used sarcastically, but many many people who use it genuinely think they have solved everything.

Afraid I use 't'internet' a bit too much. Sorry Flossie.

Why do people even entertain thought of brandishing wooden fish around, and ceremonious wooden fish even!

Rant over
Ah well. Brew

southeastastra · 18/01/2012 09:20

a gavel is a hammer Grin

QuintessentiallyShallow · 18/01/2012 09:20

"End Of" sounds controlling.

SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 09:20

is funny

PoppadumPreach · 18/01/2012 09:21

A gavel is the little wooden hammer the judge bangs when he has concluded a session or a conviction has been made

YANBU OP.

as long as you include

"simples" and "methinks" which are major twat alerts for me

BelfastBloke · 18/01/2012 09:21

And all of mumsnet knows that controlling is the worst thing in the world.

the hth sarcastic comment is very irritating, was funny about four years ago but maybe i've been here too long too

fuzzpig · 18/01/2012 09:21

I don't think I've ever seen used in a serious way on a thread. It always seems to be accompanied by a :o

Whatmeworry · 18/01/2012 09:21

Different things entirely.

Gaveleers are Judgeypants who wear Sensible Underwear and read the Daily Mail and Telegraph and theink the Country Is Going To The Dogs

EndOfs are frustrated pocket martinets who think the Guardian is despicably right wing and think that Dogs Should Rule The Country.

Its all true, its on Wikepedia oh what a pity its down today

I of course am very naice and suffer none of these worries as my word is law anyway.

Jins · 18/01/2012 09:21

MNHQ use a lot

SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 09:22

QS you know on courtroom dramas when then judge makes his pronouncement and then hits a wooden hammer on his desk to signal that he has finished and that's that and however much people shout or complain he's not going to listen

The hammer is the gavel

Does that make sense now?

fuzzpig · 18/01/2012 09:22

And even if it isn't accompanied by an obvious marker of "I'm only kidding" - well who's to say they are being deadly serious and saying they know everything? Confused

Whatmeworry · 18/01/2012 09:22

the hth sarcastic comment is very irritating, was funny about four years ago but maybe i've been here too long too

You need to put a smiley with it to make it properly PA

hth :)

Waxtart · 18/01/2012 09:22

My pet hate is "long story short". It irrationally irritates me.

SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 09:23

End of sounds rude to me
naice gets on my nerves
as does twas

QuintessentiallyShallow · 18/01/2012 09:23

Whatmeworry, by sensible underwear you of course mean fart-filtering underwear?

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 18/01/2012 09:23

But it's not funny. You Think it's funny. BUT IT'S NOT.

Please cease and desist forthwith. muchas gracias.

BelfastBloke · 18/01/2012 09:23

You NEVER need to put a smiley face on anything. We're not American.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 09:24

is a joke

Confused

On things like "do you put the tea in first or the milk?"

Milk first

I've never seen anyone do it on a serious thread. Well, I mean, tea is serious business to a lot of people, but YKWIM Grin

redrubyshoes · 18/01/2012 09:24

What about

Is that nicer or should I piss off to NetMums?

SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 09:25

Toffee hammer worse surely as it's metal and could do some damage?

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 18/01/2012 09:26

Yes, they do seem to Jins. I think they actually mean it though. Which makes it even worse
