I used to mod on a small close knit forum. There was a poster who was in her mid 20s and lived a lovely life in South Africa. We all talked with her for over 3 years, then she came clean and told us she was in her mid 40s and lived in Manchester!

I was begged to accept her but I never could, everyone else met up regularly and took her into the group but sorry no, not me. I left and unfortunately lost good friends over it.

Salmonskinroll, yes, that was me (I think)- a couple of years ago I namechanged, made a few pisstakey posts which were meant to be a funny send-up of another poster, but in retrospect should have just stayed on one thread with her and been done in my usual name. So the content was nothing cruel, but the act of having a little drunken rampage around lots of threads when she had long gone to bed was out of order and ill-judged. In the morning it had all been deleted, I'd been ticked off, and there was a long thread from people who hadnt seen the posts speculating who the total bitch from last night must have been . So I bottled it and didn't own up. I did try to contact the target of my stupidity to apologise at the time, but she never replied, so I assumed she wanted to leave it. I have since spoken to her about it though, and we are fine.

Yes Maryz I recognise that Boxroom Troll description too well - I don't think of them as trolls though, they are just PITA. They are not lying, or making stuff up for mischievous fun, they are just deluded and cannot see that they are the main authors of their own misfortunes. Mind you, there are plenty of those on here all the time, well-know people who seem quite sane and likeable in general terms but who make me want to go head/desk/head/desk,

I'm as certain as I can be, minus IP addresses, of one definite regular troll with her handy sockpuppet. Quite sure that it's only a matter of (short) time before it's confirmed anyway. For an enormous medium, the internet is scarily small.

I agree with Cothers (much as I hate to ) in that the lighthearted namechangers (or epic fail ones, Bups....) for silly and amusing threads, are harmless and it's pretty easy to see that that is exactly what they are doing.

I have been sucked in on a couple of occasions and what makes me really sad is the fact that I am always reluctant to offer any support or advice (where I can) to posters who genuinely need it which is a sad way to feel.

The ops who make absolutely no sense just sound like a pissed person writing utter shite. There's regular one on here I think.

You can do it maliciously, or you can just be too embarrassed to bump one of your threads in your usual name , so you add something inane as someone else to to get it back up there. I've done that as a newbie- I wouldn't now, because I know the guvnors () really frown on it, but I bet most sockpuppeting is fairly innocuous like that.

I am a complete innocent. There are a couple of strange 'uns who I look askance at on here, but I am too naive to see any long term trolling really. Or just not used to ways of forums.
