To think that quoting past threads/quiches on MN does not prove you aren't a troll?

You know when someone says 'name changed but not a troll - missing toaster, poo troll etc'. It doesn't really prove anything, does it? Any lurkers could read all that and still be a troll of some sort, no?

Am bored, can you tell? Grin

Katie, I remember, vaguely wanting Terracotta. Dh decided we needed a slightly brighter shade than Terracotta. We had to live with it for months, and then it took 5 coats of white to cover it.

I lived with three hairy sailors, that was the beginning of my bad decisions Grin

Why would anyone change name? What's wrong with people knowing the truth? Is it to avoid a ban or something? Or to avoid people changing their opinion of you? When I started posting I joined a thread and thoroughly pissed rather a lot of people off, which wasn't a great start if I were to gain any sort of reputation. I could have name changed but how could I be a different person?

If some threads are fake, I won't ever notice. I expect people to be truthful. Hugely naive of me, I know that, but I don't want to become suspicious of everything I see otherwise what is the point?

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 18/01/2012 04:16

Do you think any of tge trolls/sockpuppets get changed when being different characters to really get into tge role?

FellatioNelsonsDog · 18/01/2012 05:31

I have name-changed very temporarily for loads of threads. It is simply driven by a need for at least some privacy. Although I like to hope that no-one has outed me from RL on here you can never guarantee it. Also, once you build up a network of friends and become well-known/establlished on here, suddenly it doesn't feel so anonymous anymore, even if it is still words on a screen. In the same way that I don't spill my guts about everything to my RL friends, I don't always want to do it on here either.

People really do keep spreadsheets you know (mostly in their heads but they are like fucking elephants round here Wink) and some people just love to find a perceived chink in the armour of someone who otherwise seems like that might have everything going for them. There is shedloads of schadenfreude around these parts. I think it's better to maintain an element of privacy and mysteriousness sometimes, as a self-preservation thing. That does not make someone a troll though.

FellatioNelsonsDog · 18/01/2012 05:32

Ooh - shedloads of schadenfreude, get me with my effortless alliteration. Grin

LoremIpsum · 18/01/2012 05:41

I mod on another forum, one with, gasp, sigs, tickers and pics (though not nm and you can opt for an image free view, phew).

We get loads of twin trolls, but also just pregnancy trolls, they're often busted because they use photos they've sourced from elsewhere, this is particularly common with the premmie trolls.

We also have a regular 'why does everyone hate me because I'm rich and gorgeous?' troll, a fat hating troll and loads of misogynist trolls, one in particular loves to pm us to tell us he'll be back and we can't stop him because he's a tech savvy god and we're just stupid bitches. We don't have sock puppets very often because name changes still link to the one profile unless you register with a new email and only the most dedicated fuckwits can be bothered. Throw in a handful of regulars with personality disorders and a bucketload of spam and it's quite busy.

The poo troll, however, seems to limit her/himself to MN. Thank god.

LoremIpsum · 18/01/2012 05:46

Oh, and the closer it gets to an election the more political trolls you get. They're clever in that they work up to it so seem like normal posters at first and they inevitably disappear right after. The right seems to do a better job of this than the left.

We also have one circumsicion fetishist who is very disturbing. There were also a few very persistent fathers rights activists (actually women hating troglodytes) who's behaviour almost destroyed the one parent and blended family boards.

FellatioNelsonsDog · 18/01/2012 06:01

Also Moth I recently posted a genuine question that I needed the answer to, but as well as the name-changing I changed the relationships and circumstances to throw anyone very clever off my scent even further. I was careful not to say 'this is my life' because I knew it wasn't and I didn't want to risk being seen as a troll, albeit unwittingly, so I kept it very vague and hypothetical, but there were still untruths in there. It was only because I knew that the nature of the question would attract answers that were skewed by politics, or by people's perceptions or pre-conceptions of the poster, rather than just giving a blanket, honest, all-purpose answer to the question. I can pretty much guarantee the responses I got were not what I would have got if certain people had know it was me.

But again - that does not make me a troll. Just someone who wanted an honest response without a partisan view or an agenda.

PinotVaggio · 18/01/2012 08:25

I n/c for sensitive/private threads. I think it's sensible to do so. Namechanging to enable privacy is vastly different to trolling.

StickAForkInMeImDone · 18/01/2012 08:36

Pinot I think that is reasonable and I imagine lots of posters do the same. What I really dislike is posters who namechange purely to start a controversial thread, and don't want to do it under the normal NN necause they don't want people to change their opinions of them. That makes me very Hmm

Psammead · 18/01/2012 08:52

Hang on, TSC's comment about Pag's and Spiderleg's homes was surely a joke?! 'Poor people like you'? Blimey.

PinotVaggio · 18/01/2012 09:11

Agree Sticky, agree.

I hate threads like this. I think about the folks reading it trying to work out if it's them that being coded-spoken about and it makes me very gloomy.

I'm feeling quite melancholic (is that even a word?) at the moment anyway. I should leave this thread I think.

StealthPolarBear · 18/01/2012 09:12

Agree pinot, that's exactly what its for. I don't think anyone has a problem with that or with the noisy name changes. I NXP for work stuff as well, sometimes bit Tbh is be happy for.mn to conform all my previous name changes.

salmonskinroll · 18/01/2012 09:13

Sorry Pinot Sad

I started it but don't really understand half of it Smile

Hope you feel happy soon
