To steal from the church toddler group?

we're 2 days away from pay day and literally have no money. We are ok for food, nappies etc but we ran out of toilet roll today and so when I went to the church toddler group this morning I stole one from their loo Blush I now feel really really bad about it. Not only did I steal but from the church!!

OP - PM me with your address, I will happily send you 2 nice rolls of Tesco Extra Soft, (one to use, one to take back to the church next week) if only to stop all these sanctimonious people lecturing you

AmberLeaf · 10/01/2012 20:20

MrsDevere

I totally get what you're saying about people expecting the church to be forgiving in this sort of situation.

That sort of works both ways I think in that people would think it worse to steal a loo roll from the church hall loos as opposed to taking a big wadge from Tesco toilets [as someone else mentioned upthread]

Is taking it from Tescos more ok? is it worse to take from the church hall because its a church?

Those questions are for anyone who wants to answer not just MrsDevere!

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 10/01/2012 20:22

OP: thank you for posting. We have a box in the porch of our church for food and household essentials for the local community project. I think I've put stuff in there once, but it's just one of those things I see and walk past every week.

Next week, I will be putting in some food and some loo roll. Inspired by you :o

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 10/01/2012 20:32

Amber I would expect the church to be compassionate about somone taking toilet rolls etc. I would be disgusted at a church that automatically prosecuted or called the police.

I would want a church to talk to the person who did it and find out why and if they could help them so they didnt need to steal again.

BUT churches are a target for theft and piss taking generally and that isnt right. Lots of people who attend church are poor, lots give their time and donate their own property for the use of others. To have it pinched because something thinks 'well its a church innit, they should give it to me' is out of order.

I used to go to a lovely church in a deprived area. I was poor at the time. Me and some other single mums collected clothes for babies and equipment etc. We had feck all between us but we wanted to help.

People would come in and just help themselves to huge amounts and sell it or take it when they really didnt need it. It was very disheartening.

Having my own kids' toys pinched from the creche was pretty crap as well.

Some people are just greedy and selfish and will justify their behaviour with anything

I am not including the OP in that group.

scummymummy · 10/01/2012 21:02

Agree with secretmincerincer. This is akin to taking multiple tomato ketchup sachets in McDonalds not to participating in the great train robbery.

Serenitysutton · 10/01/2012 21:22

Agree with scrummy mummy. If you'd dropped it in the loo it would still be "gone" these things happen.
OP- sympathy :) things will get better

M0naLisa · 10/01/2012 21:24

You can get 2 packs of 4 loo rolls at Farmfoods for £2 :) Or a pack of 9 from tescos for £1.99, even if we are ok with money i always get the cheap ones. None of this andrex/charmelle stuf

skybluepearl · 10/01/2012 21:32

you are going to burn in hell ..... (said in a cackling voice with dramatic thunder in background)

AChickenCalledKorma · 10/01/2012 22:03

LOL Katie (Whispers - didn't he speak aramaic? Anyone know the aramaic for "here, have a loo roll, it's on the house!")

[shame]

rogersmellyonthetelly · 10/01/2012 22:08

No need to nick it, as He said "ask and you shall receive"

oikopolis · 10/01/2012 22:19

Next time you're in a bind, I bet you could ask someone at the church and they would be happy to give you a loo roll to take home!! Charity and all that.

But if you're too embarrassed to ask, just pop another one back when you can.

You're not unreasonable to pinch loo roll if you don't have any. You've got to wipe your arse. Though obviously I'd want to steal from the McDonalds cloakrooms before I took from a religious institution and/or community resource :)

AKMD · 10/01/2012 22:23

You should have asked but I understand why you didn't. Take 2 back next week or do as another poster suggested above and ask the vicar if you could start a basket in the ladies' for women in this situation.

FWIW at my church, had you told someone the mess you were in, someone would have taken you straight to Tesco and got everything you needed for the next 2 days.

foreverondiet · 10/01/2012 22:25

I actually think YABU because charities like churches are very short of money, and every penny counts would be less Hmm if you stole from say toilets at M&S. You might be short of money at pay day but the church will be short of money the whole time. Make sure you put back next week.

Seriously you were desperate and did what you had to do. You've said you'll replace it anyway so it isn't really theft at all.

McHappyPants2012 · 10/01/2012 23:41

what wrong with the newspaper Grin

but op don't worry over it, just make sure you replace it

Morloth · 11/01/2012 00:05

Do you know what? Stealing is wrong.

But really, it is OK. Just replace it next week. There isn't a single Christian I know who would begrudge you one loo roll in your difficult situation. Not one.

I have worked in churches in very poor areas and we often knew that some mums were coming along just for the morning tea/something to eat. So those of us with a bit more cash would bring lots of stuff, not just snacks.

It is a church.

justonemorejingle · 11/01/2012 00:17

If you're catholic it might be fun to confess it to the priest.
I doubt anyone will notice.

Abirdinthehand · 11/01/2012 00:18

I have not read the thread. But I go to church, I give money to my church, and if it was our toddler group you are more than welcome. God has a bias towards people in need - and that sounds like need!

Abirdinthehand · 11/01/2012 00:21

Oh, and our church have a food bank for people In need. I will check it includes loo roll!
