Just read 'bad science' (finally) and I think I am in love.....

my favourite bit was Gillian McKeith thinking that oxygen (generated by chlorophyll) in your gut is not only plausible, but at all a good idea....

presumably this is at the same time as main lining anti-oxidants (which had been shown to increase your risk of disease rather than decrease it).

I totally agree with you. I've just finished bad science too. Have you had a look at the website? It's one of my favourite's and the forums are always interesting.

Saw Ben on QI not too long ago and he has the loveliest 'nice bedside manner' doctor type voice. Mmmmmm.....Grin

noblegiraffe · 09/01/2012 12:44

YANBU. I have seen him speak on numerous occasions and he is infectiously enthusiastic.

If the copy of Bad Science you read doesn't have the chapter on Matthias Rath and vitamin pills for AIDS, you can download it for free from his website. It couldn't be published originally due to the court case (Goldacre was sued for libel) and it's well worth a read. I saw him talk about it just after he was finally allowed to and he got a standing ovation.

SweetLilyTea · 09/01/2012 12:46

No, I love him too. His book should be required reading at school.

lostinwales · 09/01/2012 12:48

He is fantastic and should be compulsory reading for some of my friends everyone at school. Saw him speak on the uncaged monkeys tour and fell in love!

entropyglitter · 09/01/2012 14:08

I have the extra chapter in my copy (advantages of arriving late) and it is the most horrible horrible reading ever. It makes me cry.

he is wonderful... and yummy...

Whatmeworry · 09/01/2012 15:36

Wonderful book, I just wish more people did this sort of debunking.

CrabbyBigbottom · 09/01/2012 15:52

I met him at a party years ago. I found him egotistical and a bit boorish. There was quite a lot of coke going around, so that may have been the reason (or not, didn't see him doing any).

Only a LITTLE bit? YABU!

Heleninahandcart · 09/01/2012 18:05

YANBU as he is amazing, but please note that we are totally in love and getting married.

Helen Goldacre has a nice ring to it I think.

plutocrap · 09/01/2012 18:15

You should change your names to the Wisacres, Helen!

tooearlymustdache · 09/01/2012 18:19

i've seen him on stage on the Uncaged Monkeys tour as well, and he was bloody gorgeous very interesting and entertaining

i should look out some of his written stuff - i'm a bit Blush not very academic, is it easy to read?

I gave up science and maths at GCSE 14 years ago and thought it was an easy read. Definitely worth a go.

tooearlymustdache · 09/01/2012 18:37

what if you weren't allowed to do 'O' level physics as the only reason you chose it in the 1st place was cos you fancied all the boys it wasn't really your thing?

thunderboltsandlightning · 09/01/2012 18:38

YABU. He loves himself, you're just following his example.

He's also a smartarse and not as qualified in science as he claims.

noblegiraffe · 09/01/2012 18:54

Not as qualified in science as he claims? Are you confusing him with Gillian McKeith?

Or to give her her full medical title....Gillian McKeith. Grin

Greythorne · 09/01/2012 18:56

I do like bis weiting but I coukdn't fancy him... He wears tank tops.

lollygag · 09/01/2012 19:11

I went off him after that thing he did where he 'proved' that 'sham' acupuncture was just as effective as real acupuncture.

noblegiraffe · 09/01/2012 19:43

'That thing he did'? He reported on the high quality clinical trials which showed results suggesting that sham acupuncture is just as effective as real acupuncture, but to suggest that he 'did' them, or that he 'proved' anything other than just commenting on the results seems a bit of a stretch.

lollygag · 09/01/2012 20:22

Sorry was trying to remember what i'd read.Should have asked Dr.Google before opening big mouth.

He certainly knows how to make money.

Presumably he needs it.

LordFlashheart · 09/01/2012 20:31

What was on the last chapter pls?

noblegiraffe · 09/01/2012 20:34

The missing chapter from his book, on Matthias Rath selling vitamins to cure AIDS is here.

It's a must-read.
