Just read 'bad science' (finally) and I think I am in love.....

my favourite bit was Gillian McKeith thinking that oxygen (generated by chlorophyll) in your gut is not only plausible, but at all a good idea....

presumably this is at the same time as main lining anti-oxidants (which had been shown to increase your risk of disease rather than decrease it).

I know mama because all the medics I know are tee-total, non-smoking, slim (but not too slim), fitness addicts Confused

Now if it was Dr. Christian Jessen, that would be another story.

verysmellyeli · 09/01/2012 22:41

Whole different argument mamma - are we saying that docs can't be smokers - or alcoholics/obese for example? That somehow they are exemplary higher beings who should be able to overcome everything? Sadly not true. Just human, and sometimes all the better for it. As long as they are not being hypocrites, I don't think we can cast judgement - there is a lot of difference between knowing about population-based evidence and applying it to your own personal circumstances!

verysmellyeli · 09/01/2012 22:43

Dr. Christian - now you're talking.

Mamamamoose · 09/01/2012 22:43

No, I know plenty of very obese ones.

I think addictions are a bit more worrying though.

seeker · 09/01/2012 22:45

"I think it's hilarious that he writes on evidence and health, and is a smoker; and is a psychiatrist who can't overcome his own addictions.

That is one freaky guy."

That is one of the most bizarre statements I have ever read!

Mamamamoose · 09/01/2012 22:51

He could always try acupuncture for his addictions, though.

Heleninahandcart · 09/01/2012 22:56

I come back to this thread and find there are some of you who question the integrity of my intended. How very dare you.

Helen Goldachre
Mrs Ben Goldachre
Dr. Ben Goldachre (Mrs)

Mamamamoose · 09/01/2012 22:59

You need to take your dh in hand, Mrs Goldachy. He clearly needs the love of a good woman.

entropyglitter · 09/01/2012 23:39

ohhh if you also have a phd/md you could be Drs. Goldacre!

OP posts:
Heleninahandcart · 10/01/2012 00:24

Mamamamoose I take my future DH in hand every night thank you.

Entrophy yes it will be Drs. Goldachre, although I prefer the Drs. Goldachre.

entropyglitter · 10/01/2012 00:35

Helen are you planning to spell his/your name like that? Or have wikipedia got it wrong?

On a somewhat related topic you also I have my name wrong....

entrophy would involve causing someone or something to gain a trophy....

entropy on the other hand is the KB * ln [number of microstates of a system]

Just so long as you make him feel loved, Mrs Doctor Godlaker.

BagofHolly · 10/01/2012 01:07

BG is a god and should be worshipped as such. I want to see him and Andrew Lansley in a bare fight.

Re the smoking thing, I worked in cancer services for years and could easily NAME half a dozen oncologists who smoke. And without exception they said they did it cos they liked it, and knew the risks better than anyone and were taking their chances. Blew me away.

ninjasquirrel · 10/01/2012 07:01

BagofHolly you want to see Andrew Lansley in a bare fight? Rather you than me. BG is great, though. Worth following if you're on Twitter.

Meglet · 10/01/2012 07:40

He seems to be cultivating a 'mad scientist' look with his messy hair. Obviously I get distracted by this and just wish he'd run a brush through it.

I like him on twitter but I haven't got round to reading his book yet.

seeker · 10/01/2012 08:39

Do you think he's so fed up with people saying he's not allowed to point out bullshit because he's not a proper scientist that he's cultivating the Einstein look? Most of his detractors are dim enough to be more impressed by that than by qualifications anyway..........

entropyglitter · 10/01/2012 08:51

Nah I think hair is just hair...some times it behaves and sometimes it does the other thing.....

OP posts:
Mamamamoose · 10/01/2012 09:35

I think he's more likely to be cultivating the persona of House. House is more zeitgeisty than Einstein.

iggly2 · 10/01/2012 10:29

I am half way through the book. He is a patronising git (I am trying to finish it).

stinkingbishop · 10/01/2012 10:31

YADBU. He lived at the bottom of my staircase at University and his room smelt ;) Not to mention a slightly questionable line in heavy metal Ts...

seeker · 10/01/2012 10:35

In what way a patronising git?

Mamamamoose · 10/01/2012 10:43

He certainly seems to have made an impression on his college mates...and so many of them popping up on here.

startail · 10/01/2012 10:48

As for smoking, my DF smoked. He is a very bright man. He knew all the evidence. He'd of grounded us for life if my sister and I had smoked.
Still he couldn't give it up until he had a cancer scare at almost 70.
Ben G should have known better than to start as he's much younger, but it is fiendishly addictive.

stinkingbishop · 10/01/2012 13:06

mamamamamoose and your point?

iggly2 · 10/01/2012 13:39

seeker: His writing style.

He makes good points (I genuinely like about the first half of each paragraph) but he remphasises everything, almost as if he does not expect you to understand the first time. Often using the same example in a different way (I do like lots of his examples).
