I know that this post may have some mixed reviews and may even get me slated but I can,t help it.
Someone I know although she is a genuine case her and her husband have as much as me and dh coming in and with a brand new car thrown in for good measure.
I can only dream of a new car and I work my tripe off 5 days a week as well as dh whilst some people can sit at home and get the same income coming in it seems really unfair.

BarfAndHeave · 08/01/2012 18:18

Yes, I spotted that Usual.

I'm just off to tell DS that we're going to give his pet away - he doesn't deserve companionship, he gets DLA.

I don't think we'd better have that camping trip either, now we know its BAD if you get DLA.

Fuckwits.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 08/01/2012 18:18

OMFG! Someone with depression plays FOOTBALL!!!! You mean, someone with depression engages in an activity that provides both physical exercise and social contact, and as such would be recommended by mental health professionals as part of their treatment?

SuePurblybilt · 08/01/2012 18:18

Sevenfold - they are thicker than custard, that's the problem.

PosieParker · 08/01/2012 18:18

I met a guy in a hosptial ward the other day, on dialysis three times a week for the last three years. He spent four hours each time getting his blood 'cooled' (as he called it due to it being bloody cold going back in) he does not get disability and is expected to work after he's drained physically for dialysis. For every undeserving person claiming disability I'm sure there are ten that should be don't qualify,

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 08/01/2012 18:19

One thing about threads like this is that the people of courage and great fortitude far outweigh the twats, that at least is a small consolation.

HowlingBitch · 08/01/2012 18:19

Of course they do. Then they go out to dinner parties and congradulate themselves for being "above it".

thepeoplesprincess · 08/01/2012 18:19

I just don't think someone who doesn't work should have more income than someone who doesnt

Are you just going to ignore every time someone points out this belief of yours is bonkers?

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 08/01/2012 18:20

So while I'm typing people are telling me to Fuck off or asking where my response is. Nice.

I'm not saying disabled people shouldn't have holidays or pets at all. I spend half my life trying to make adventure holidays accessible to disabled people ffs, you people really don't have a clue about me.

I think things should be funded differently. I think there should be more grants available and the things that charities do, such as provide holidays, should be funded by government. That is not the same as having a bigger income than someone who is working.

I really thought about telling my story in full on this thread. How my marriage broke down, how my ds (age 8) has been physically assaulted and I have verbally abused and disbelieved, how we are friendless where we live and estranged from family members and so many other examples of how my ds's multiple conditions have impacted at various levels on our lives but then I thought Fuck It, you are not worth mine and ds's story, you don't deserve it.

You keep living in your insular, simplistic, black and White, little worlds and pray that it never happens to you or yours.

SIL on full DLA drives 20k worth of mobility car, with air-con, alloys and metallic paint.

She is out EVERY NIGHT if her facebook is to be believed, and her daytimes are a whirl of day trips with her boyfriend, nice cafes, lunches out, and fecking horse riding .

Last year she went on holiday to Goa for a fortnight.

It is frankly disgusting. She openly boasts about how well off she is on full benefits, and there is Jack Shit wrong with her.

DH and I work full time and holiday in a tent on Dartmoor.

Bravo OP. Anyone with half a brain knows you aren't talking about quadraplegics and terminal cancer patients.

Asinine · 08/01/2012 18:21

Op

To overcome your feelings of hate, resentment and envy, and complete lack of understanding of the benefits system and lack of empathy for others I would suggest helping out some people locally who are less fortunate than yourself, perhaps people like dawnDonna who need respite desperately.

You will always feel discontented if you don't understand that a happy life is gained by loving other people through meaningful action not hating them.

Do you understand that a quirk of fate can happen any time and you could be totally dependant on other people?

We all need the support the welfare state offers, and just because a mniority of people abuse the system it doesn't mean the whole thing should be dismantled.

PosieParker · 08/01/2012 18:21

What motivates the OP is poverty, simple. Everyone looks for someone to blame for their own situation.... just read the tabloids, it's make the poor hate the poor time. Who is running big stories on the recent research done that will close loop holes in tax avoidance and give the government new powers to prosecute obvious avoidance. Who is reminding us all about the evasion in tax costs more than the whole benefit system?

carernotasaint · 08/01/2012 18:21

Racism and sexism are illegal and frowned upon as they should be. Look at the vilification towards Diane Abbot in the news about remarks that she made on twitter. If her remarks had been made about disabled people would she have been vilified in the press like she has been?
Sadly i dont think so.

cory · 08/01/2012 18:21

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll, how would you make employers employ disabled people if they can get somebody else who can work faster and need less time off for medical appointments? It is all very well saying that somebody could hold down a job, but unless they work as well as an able person any employer who takes them on risks losing money- which is a big problem for small firms.

And who are you to decide what is a luxury for a disabled person? For a person with mental health problems a pet might be the one thing that stands between them and suicide. (I know at least one person who has been prescribed taking up aquatics by his doctor: probably a lot cheaper than the medication.) For a person with a joint condition an occasional cheap holiday in a warmer place might be an essential part of the treatment.

What you want to do is to take away from the disabled people is the dignity of choice, of making their own decision as to what is essential for them and what is a luxury. It is treating disabled people as children, on a one-size-fits-all basis.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 08/01/2012 18:21

oh good here come the socks

TheHumancatapult · 08/01/2012 18:22

Yup guess them envy us Sad silly really because there be first ones to yell if they needed the help

Holidays have you ever tried booking somewhere that's accessibile , oh you need normal accommodation that's £300 a week oh you need adapted accomidationd that's £900 a week oh sorry were booked for 3 years

mrsmplus3 · 08/01/2012 18:22

mrsdevere - like i said, i am absolutely not talking about genuine cases.

i was talking about the real benefit cheats that are out there.

i have only just realised what youre all arguing about on here and im not involved at this particular stage. i have no experience or knowledge in living with a disabled person so i have no wish to be part of this convo as its none of my business. when i wrote my post i only checked out the ops opening statement and that struck a chord with me. not what you guys are discussing now.

Sevenfold · 08/01/2012 18:22

bollocks
greed and selfishness motivate people like the op.
ffs they are jealous of disabled people.
how sick can you get to be like that.

SuePurblybilt · 08/01/2012 18:22

We don't have a clue about you Iuse because your posts make no sense. You have said that you believe that disabled people should be given care, heat, food etc and no luxuries. Including pets. You said that. In your posts.

Sevenfold · 08/01/2012 18:24

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll because you are talking shit.

cory · 08/01/2012 18:24

IUse, you did say "I would consider luxuries to be holidays, pets, anything really that a person could live without".

But not unlimited transport, judging from your post.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 08/01/2012 18:24

Thehumancatapult. Complete aside PM me if you want details of a fantastic place to holiday that is accessible and won't cost the earth and is run by a fab man who wants to and is making a huge difference to people's lives. Anyone else to if you want info on a wonderful place.

PosieParker · 08/01/2012 18:25

No, it's ignorance. People see a person with disabilities getting out of their car with ease and think 'no disability'. And I don't believe that the OP is selfish and greedy, she's just pissed off with her hard work and getting the same as someone not working. I understand that. I don't think anyone is made happy by looking for a split second into someone else's life and comparing.
