To want to lamp my DH for this?!?

AAARGH! ok, not actually going to be violent, before anyone tells me off, I am so annoyed though, his brother has invited us to Paris to see him and his girlfriend. To celebrate their birthdays (twins) They live abroad, we barely see them, only met her once, seems lovely. They have only met DD once. Their xmas present to us is to pay for the hotel and eurostar, was very excited, they told us three weeks ago...

So I am looking into the trains today, DH just happens to ask 'Do i need a passport for this?' Cause mine runs out..erm...today!

We were meant to be taking cash over to his brother so he could buy an engagement ring for her there, can't bring that much cash out of where they live.

I am sat here fuming, have looked into it online but it isn't possible to renew it before then, he is Irish.

I happen to say how ridiculous it is that he has left it to run out - he is all defensive, well I didn't know we were going anywhere, this is so typical - basically he would have just assumed I would remind him or something, he has business trips all the time abroad, has one in May, he just doesn't take bloody responsibility for anything like this, if left to him everything paperwork related would just be a mess.

I am so annoyed! I was really looking forward to it!

Go without him
That 'll learn him

FabbyChic · 07/01/2012 12:09

He can get a Passport renewed in a day.

DeeOfTheNorthPole · 07/01/2012 12:10

Are the rules different in Ireland? Just asking as I once had a similar problem and by going to the passport office in person and waiting managed to get one that same day (although when i first phoned them to ask they did say there were no guarantees).

YANBU to be annoyed about though...

Catsdontcare · 07/01/2012 12:11

I think it's different for Irish passports fabby I believe they have to be sent to Ireland?

Catsdontcare · 07/01/2012 12:12

I would go without him!

catsareeasier · 07/01/2012 12:12

Er, you have a passport, right? Your DD has a passport, right? The train and hotel are already booked and paid for, right? And you get on with your BiL and soon-to-be DiL, right? So the problem is?

DH can spend the time you're away sorting his paperwork out, job done!
Hope you and your DD have a fantastic trip.

Collision · 07/01/2012 12:14

When are you actually supposed to be going to Paris?

ljgibbs · 07/01/2012 12:15

When do you go?

LydiaWickham · 07/01/2012 12:19

Go without him. Can he speed things up if he goes to the Irish embassy in London? See if there's anything they can do like extend it if it's just run out rather than get a new one.

MrsTwinks · 07/01/2012 12:19

you should be able to go to the embassy and get it done. I've had to do it many times with mine, infact I've once seen them make mine infront of me they can renew that quick (or could). Contact the embassy, you might be lucky.

I'm sure you used to be able to travel throughout Europe with just ID?

Although I'm not too sure whether UK and Ireland opted out of it?

ChaoticAngel · 07/01/2012 12:23

If you can't get it renewed on time then I agree with others that you should go without him. Having to face the consequences of his actions might make him a little more responsible in future.

missmakesstuff · 07/01/2012 12:36

Your responses have made me smile! Yes, maybe I will go without him - no idea if the hotel is booked yet, was going to book the train today. He has yet to speak to his brother, I am worried about it being part of the plan that we bring over the travellers cheques so he can buy an engagement ring there, would hate to scupper the big proposal he has planned.

I am mn'ing and getting on with work and giving him the silent treatment at the moment, mainly so I don't go mad and start having a go at him, I am so angry!

Mrs Twinks Are you irish? was it the embassy in london?

I have looked on the embassy website, it isn't clear if he can apply in person, but I would assume that is how it works, the next time he would be able to go is next friday, unless he takes a day off - will tell him to call them when they are open on Monday. he can deal with it, it's his mess.

He knows full well when it ran out, as he took it out when he first came over here, and we met! has been going on about it being 10 years since he moved here, he came over just after new year. He is just a bloody nightmare when it comes to anything paperwork related, I just give up. Maybe it would bloody teach him, I could go and have a lovely time whilst he does jobs round the house, sorts out our credit cards, boring stuff like that...(is there an evil grin but still pissed off emoticon?) don't know if I could do it to him on his birthday weekend though!!

squidgy I also thought about the id, but I have never heard of anyone actually doing it? think it might just be the proper bit of europe though.

No you definately need a passport to go to France.

Wittsend13 · 07/01/2012 12:42

Op he should be able to get an emergency passport but call up the Irish embassy and double check. I can try and find out for you when I go out later Smile

fuzzpig · 07/01/2012 12:44

What a twat. Don't run around after him with embassies and what not, just go by yourself and have a great time! Tell your BIL and watch your DH squirm, don't make excuses for him.

ComposHat · 07/01/2012 12:47

*I'm sure you used to be able to travel throughout Europe with just ID?

Although I'm not too sure whether UK and Ireland opted out of it?*

You can travel without a passport if you come from a country that has National ID cards, which Ireland doesn't!

OP- this may help clarify things.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 07/01/2012 12:51

Absolutely definitely go without him - not least because it will give him the kick up the bum he needs.

diddl · 07/01/2012 12:52

Do you have ID-if so, isn´t that acceptable within Europe?

I´m in Germany & am fairly certain that the Germans use ID cards.

Because I don´t have an ID card (am English), I have to keep my passport up to date as my form of ID whilst living here.

Husband was once about to fly to Paris on business when it was noticed that his passport was out of date, but he was still allowed on!

QueenStromba · 07/01/2012 12:54

I got my passport from the Irish Embassy in Knightsbridge, I just turned up with the form and got the passport in the post a week or two later.

Birdsgottafly · 07/01/2012 13:02

It isn't just whether ID is available. Different transport has different rules. You will have to make sure that they will let travel out of Paris, just because they let you leave the UK doesn't mean that they will let you leave another country. Double check.

If he doesn't get it sorted out, i would go without him.

Birdsgottafly · 07/01/2012 13:03

I meant different transport providers. They can set their own terms and conditions.

missmakesstuff · 07/01/2012 13:14

I have told BIL, he had booked the hotel already, just waiting for a call back, they are in the pub, it's evening there.

We are going on the 20th, by post it's too long to apply, I don't even know if he has all the documents he needs here, his mum probably still has his long birth cert, can't do anything till monday, he can deal with it. I think embassy closed today from the looks of it. he truly is fucking useless when it comes to these things, I have sorted it all out for him for too long.

*Wittsend, if you could find out that would be amazing, cheers, although I am pretty sure there is nothing that can be done. he can sort it, up to him, I will just spend the next couple of weeks selecting my wardrobe for paris and planning what we will see whilst there, we will have a lovely time. Grin

Heartily agree he is a twat. haven't actually told him he is yet though, I am still too angry to speak to him. He will go on the defensive though, always does. he hasn't said anything to me either, hasn't even apologised, as he thinks he has done nothing wrong.
