AIBU to think that childminder's assistant should not be in her pj's when looking after children?

Our DD goes to a lovely male childminder whose partner is his assistant. They are both lovely but a few times I have noticed when I drop DD off in the morning that his assistant does not seem to have got dressed that morning, still wearing pj bottoms, a comfy top, shrug and slippers. He usually wears a tracksuit, which of course it's absolutely fine. I know it's their house and she doesn't have to go anywhere, but for some reason it makes me feel uneasy. If I'm paying money for them to look after my child, I'd like them to look a bit more professional..is that unreasonable? And if not, should I say something?

I have slippers on now! Bet many of you do too. The rest of me is dressed and made up though and I've been out and about today. I think slippers indoors is just fine, and for many cultures it is the norm.

I think piprabbit may have hit the nail on the head, she has chosen casual wear which looks like PJs. I am guessing this because her top half appears to be "dressed" from the description.

Tee2072 · 06/01/2012 18:32

I not only have slippers on. I have my PJs on and have since about 230.

And I work from home. In my PJs. Although I don't meet clients here.

Oh and some of you would have been Shock this week when I ran outside, in my PJs, to grab our newly emptied bin before it blew down the street.

If she is wearing 'lounge wear' YABU.

If she is wearing pj, the same once she wore at night, YANBU.

I am a childminder and I am always dressed appropriately for the day (tidy jeans and top). Any of my family who happens to be at home must be washed and dresses before coming downstairs when I am working.

I provide bibs for the little ones and if we are outside and the ground is damp the children wear boiler suits over their clothes and they wear wellies.

Bochead sums it up by requesting "common decency". Sadly I think this is lacking in life all too much, and in this household. The cm is operating a business and there is no way people shoud be around downstairs in pyjamas. She may not be working but she should be dressed if downstairs during hours of business.

Shakirasma · 08/01/2012 09:03

My CM is always dressed and ready when I drop DS off, as she should be.

However the person she lives with is often still in their nightwear, dressing gown and slippers and not yet washed.

I am not bothered in the least, firstly because that person is my CM's 80 odd year old mother, and secondly because M is my child's carer not her mother.

MovesLikeJagger · 08/01/2012 09:12

If the care they provide is what you are looking for I wouldn't worry too much.

McHappyPants2012 · 08/01/2012 09:16

Don't see the problem, PJ are comfortable and alot more practicle when looking after small children

SantasENormaSnob · 08/01/2012 09:17

Yanbu if she is a paid assistant.

RitaMorgan · 08/01/2012 09:21

I wouldn't be massively impressed if she was actually still unwashed and in pjs.

It depends though - maybe the CM opens at 8am but the assistant doesn't actually start work til 9am for example?

Or she might have got up and washed and changed into comfy loungewear type stuff?

But I do expect my CM to be a bit professional, and also to get out and about with the children - they are doing a job, not just lounging around at home.

I look after my children in my pjs. Much nicer doing a days 'work' in comfy clothes!

As with your child coming home looking not so clean 1] i always think if kids are clean at the end of the day, they haven't had much fun 2] just ask them to keep her face clean of snot etc 3] make sure she wears old clothes.

I rarely bothered with a bib for my two unless they were dressed up for an outing. At home, who cares!

sausageandpickle · 08/01/2012 11:10

as the assistant, surely she only works when he goes over his numbers, if OP's child is one of the first to be dropped off she is probably not working yet. My old CM used to employ her mum as assistant but we never saw her in the morning as there weren't that many kids there yet, this assistant happens to live in the same house as the CM.

differentnameforthis · 08/01/2012 11:10

My son was always changed if his clothes were filthy at the end of the day

Really? Stuff the extra laundry, all for the sake of some dirt on the ride home.

PorridgeBrain · 08/01/2012 12:30

If it was a childminder working on their own I would say YANBU as at some point they would need to leave the children to get dressed or if there was an emergency and they had to leave the house quickly to take a child to hospital. If they are working, they should be dressed and ready to work.

However as there are two cm's it could be that the 2nd hasn't started work yet as there may not be enough children when you arrive to need two cm's working. If there are enough children to need two cm's they should both be dressed and ready to work for the reasons described above.

Wongamum · 08/01/2012 12:44

YANBU. It is only a small thing admittedly. But how much effort does it take to get dressed for work in the morning? I believe she is setting a bad example to her mindees. Weekends are ok for dossing in your pjs if you are staying at home.

I hope she has changed by the time you come to collect your DC at the end of the day!

manticlimactic · 08/01/2012 12:57

Oh for heavens sake she isn't dossing around in pjs. She might not have even started work! She's the assistant not the CM. The OP hasn't mentioned (has she asked?) whether the assistant starts at the same time. We don't know how many mindees are there when the OP dropps her child off.

Won't someone think of the children! They will be so damaged seeing someone in pjs first thing on a morning. Hmm
