to think that making sandwiches for packed lunches is the worst drudge job ever?

Making sandwiches at 6am is hateful.

We take it in turns on a rota (I make them for a week, then DP, then DD) because making our own lunch in the morning would be chaos as we are all out the house by just gone 7.

I can't be doing with making them the night before because they would be vile that way (imo).

I hate it. We have only in the last 6 months or so started doing it because we found that we were spending about £50 a week on lunches out.

I am half tempted just to buy a bag of apples and everyone can starve until dinner time.

I fucking HATE making sandwiches Angry

They're not vile if you make them the night before btw - but you still have to make them!

Kayano · 04/01/2012 14:13

Get pre cut pitta bread and just chuck in some filling?

Sandwiches are not a requirement for packed lunch?

mrsjay · 04/01/2012 14:14

when MY eldest dd was at school she would ONLy eat tuna sandwhiches tuna at 7 am i hate making lunches with a passion so early in the morning i wouldnt make them night before either , dh doesnt like my sandwhiches as i never put enough spread on , he slathers it im so glad we dont use butter , but think of the money you are saving dh makes dd2 now so i never have to make it .

baubleybobbityhat · 04/01/2012 14:14

Not a fan of making sandwiches for packed lunches (although we only make one per day as one of my children has school dinners) but for worst drudge job ever I give you

folding and putting the clean washing away

Gavel.

TroublesomeEx · 04/01/2012 14:15

I agree. That's one of the reasons we have leftovers for lunch.

So DD takes in her packed lunch couscous and roasted veg; falafels and salad in a pitta; pasta and sauce; lentil curry for lunch and probably only has sandwiches once a week!

I've had a few comments from other parents about how 'good' I am with her lunch. I'm not good, I'm lazy!

squeakytoy · 04/01/2012 14:16

I make them the night before. It takes a few minutes while I am cooking dinner and waiting for something to finish in the oven or on the hob.

If they are wrapped in cling film and put into the fridge, they are not vile.

Even if you do them in a morning, it hardly takes much time to butter a few slices of bread and shove something in between them though.

mrsjay · 04/01/2012 14:18

folkgirl my dd said if kids in her school took food like that they get teased about it although my dd does go to a crispsandwhich and a bottle of coke school Grin although dd doesnt take those some boy took the piss cos she took cherry tomatoes in her lunchbox which she loves , (there is no hope (sigh* )

StickAForkInMeImDone · 04/01/2012 14:19

No you are most definitely NBU. I hate doing them. Hate it. Hate it Hate it Angry
I can't stand doing them the night before either. Though even worse, I read a tip somewhere, where someone makes up the whole weeks sandwiches on a sunday then freezes them and just takes out what is needed the night before

Get0rf · 04/01/2012 14:22

Oh, it is not just sandwiches. We get leftover pasta, couscous and salads as well. That is a faff as well. Even if it just spooning leftovers from the fridge in a tupperware dish, the sheer act of looking for the tupperware, finding the right bastard lid, then realising that the tupperware pots are all missing, presumably in dd's bag or in the garage containing screws.

There is something depressing about tupperware or old chinese food containers.

I have suggested that we all have porridge in the morning and steam through til the evening.

Grin @ mrsjay. Mine's only in year 1 though, so ok for now!!

My DS is in year 8 and there's no way he'd eat it at school now, if it's not a low grade hotdog sausage, it's not food!

TroublesomeEx · 04/01/2012 14:25

these are what you need Get0rf. They won't end up in the garage, and it's easy to spot the lids!

mrsjay · 04/01/2012 14:25

folkgirl oh dd is in high school keep up the good work with your youngest cos you know how bad it gets then dd1 is in college gawd knows what she eats costa and a cookie i think , Grin

TroublesomeEx · 04/01/2012 14:26

Probably, mrsjay. With the odd Pot Noodle thrown in for good measure!

MixedBerries · 04/01/2012 14:27

ComposHat · 04/01/2012 14:29

I once worked with a sloven woman who used to freeze batches of sandwiches and bring them into work. To complete the defrosting process, she used to leave them on the radiators. The days when she had Tuna and Sweetcorn were the absolute pits.

It used to stink out the office.

mazzi2fly · 04/01/2012 14:30

I hate it too!

So my DH makes them. Job done!

letmehelp · 04/01/2012 14:31

You're right that it's a rotten job, but they're not vile if you make them the night before - in fact they benefit from the night before in the fridge, if they're properly cold when you put them in your bag, they have have half a chance of being fresh at lunch time after the morning in a warm classroom.

lubeybooby · 04/01/2012 14:31

Yes to porridge - but not to steaming through, you'll end up cracking and buying something

Just take snacks - fruit, a little cake or cereal bar or something, a babybel cheese, sorted.

Almostfifty · 04/01/2012 14:33

I used to make five packed lunches in the mornings. One for OH and one for each of the boys. Seemed to take ages.

I loved Fridays, cos OH had a bacon butty at work and the boys had hot dinners. :)

I'm down to one now. OH is away during the week and I've only one needing packed lunches. Dunno whether I like that though.

fruitshootsandheaves · 04/01/2012 14:33

I hate making sandwiches

I asked for 'a day off from making sandwiches' for my Birthday last year

Grin
Almostfifty · 04/01/2012 14:34

Forgot to say, I hate sorting the washing as well.

tardisjumper · 04/01/2012 14:36

My new years resolution is to take a nice lunchbox to work every day and I have made this easier by getting a lunch box with a salad compartment and buying wraps and making rolls so I don't have to slice bread. For some reason that is the worst bit.
