to think that making sandwiches for packed lunches is the worst drudge job ever?

Making sandwiches at 6am is hateful.

We take it in turns on a rota (I make them for a week, then DP, then DD) because making our own lunch in the morning would be chaos as we are all out the house by just gone 7.

I can't be doing with making them the night before because they would be vile that way (imo).

I hate it. We have only in the last 6 months or so started doing it because we found that we were spending about £50 a week on lunches out.

I am half tempted just to buy a bag of apples and everyone can starve until dinner time.

I don't mind making sandwhiches, I do it the night before if I'm being organised enough .

I HATE washing!!!!!!!! Angry Luckily dh does his own so I've only got mine and ds's. I am also one to leave it in baskets or tumble dryer and pick out of it until I can summon up enough enthusiasm to put the bloody stuff away!

seeker · 04/01/2012 19:34

Flubba- I still do PFS and PSS even now and mine are 10 and 16! Ignore all these unsentimental types!

Ds used to be my ace sock sorter when he was a pre schooler. I hqd to step in one day, though, when I heard him muttering "no, you two can't be friends, you're different colours"!

GeriManda · 04/01/2012 19:43

There's never any actual room in the drawers or wardrobes to put clothes away. If the wardrobes were empty with wooden hangers all facing the same way it wouldn't be so bad. But trying to force clothes into broken IKEA drawers is pointless as will be dirty again in a few days

Can cope with making sandwiches, oddly. Only for one person who only eats one of 2 things

Eggrules · 04/01/2012 19:52

Don't mind lunches. I always make DS's the night before and have enough raw veggies in the fridge to last a few days.

Laundry is the worst - specifically ironing.

folkgirl Does you LO take a flask? If so can you recommend one?

Shutupanddrive · 04/01/2012 19:58

I don't mind it luckily as I used to work in a bakery where people would come in at lunchtime for takeout sandwiches! Big massive queue every day!
I hate ironing though, which is why I hardly ever do it

McHappyPants2012 · 04/01/2012 20:01

one of the reason i switched ds over to school dinners as i hated that job.......for it not to get eaten anyhow

marriedinwhite · 04/01/2012 20:15

dd used to have packed lunches at primary school. She liked the same thing every day: 3 cherry toms or small bunch of grapes, small cake, cheesy string or peperami stick and a plain sandwich which had to have the crusts cut off -sandwiches could be cream cheese, tuna and a tiny bit of mayo, egg mayo, plain cheese or plain ham. On a Sunday night I used to make five rounds of sandwiches and put them in the freezer. I also used to keep all the other component parts in the lunch box container in the fridge.

All I had to do in the mornings was shove one of each item in the lunch box and put a slice of cucumber in each frozen sandwich quarter. Used to take about 45 seconds and had the added bonus of the sandwich being fresh and cool after three hours in a stuffy classroom.

piratecat · 04/01/2012 20:16

a happy start to the week is if dd is having packed lunch (depends on the school dinner menu-some things are gross) 3 days in a row.
one tin of tuna, lots of mayo.
3 rolls.
bish bash bosh.

put in fridge.

Flubba · 04/01/2012 20:25

Thanks seeker :) Wink :)

Lotkinsgonecurly · 04/01/2012 20:32

We're all having packed lunches ( well the dc's and dh ). Its one of my new years resolutions to make them the night before and just shove them in the fridge. They all seem to eat them and think they're ok. Tomorrow its pasta.

Somedays I put little sweets in there as a small treat, ds loves those, dh thinks I'm mad and dd doesn't notice!

WorriedAboutDaughter · 04/01/2012 20:37

I get home at night and make the kids' sandwiches, then I get up in the morning and make mine and DH's sandwiches (we like tomatoes on ours, bread would go soggy), then I go to work and make more fecking sandwiches (bakery).

Sandwiches are evil.

Get0rf · 04/01/2012 20:41

I used to lovingly (yes, really Grin) chop a carrot into batons and wrap in tin foil for dd when she was in infant school. She told me a couple of years ago that she was embarrassed of the carrots because all her pals had rocky bars or rice cripsy cakes so she hurled the carrots in the bin. Grin

My DP hates sandwiches! He says he is not picky, but his "do not like" list is longer than he would care to admit. I cook for 4 though there are 3 of us, put leftovers in a tupperware box, and everyone is happy. The box is filled after dinner when he's sorting out the kitchen, put in the fridge and ready to go for the next day. I won't have to deal with the sandwich making for school for another 3 years!

Ragwort · 04/01/2012 20:45

Am I missing something ? - I can think of hundreds of household chores that are much worse than making a couple of sandwiches each morning Grin.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 04/01/2012 20:59

I solved this problem by leaving for work an hour before everyone else has to get out of the house, so it has become husband's job. Although boys do have school dinners twice a week.

One of the perks of my job is that I am provided with lunch.

PastGrace · 04/01/2012 21:03

I still remember my nursery packed lunches - for a special treat my mum would make me jelly in a small shaped mould (like a teddy or a turtle or a rabbit).

I have no idea a) how she had the time, patience, or inclination, and b) how I never tipped my lunch box upside down and spilled jelly over everything.

She sent me with a loose kiwi fruit (I was a fussy child Wink) once and it got squashed. I cried and refused to eat any of my lunch because the kiwi was what I had been excited about.

Sandwich making is annoying, but I agree unloading dishwasher and putting away clothes is worse

dawntigga · 04/01/2012 21:09

YABU but it's a close second to ironing.

Shakey1500 · 04/01/2012 21:10

Oh you are so NU. I absolutely DETEST making sandwiches. I'll make DH's for work if he needs them and DS's for school.

Is there anything so tedious as buttering bread and the rest? It's total faff.

And what's with the butter nowadays??? Time was (halcyon days) when you could glide the knife through the bread and it would STAY on the bloody thing all the way to the bread. Now? Oh no it decides, halfway there, to FALL OFF. Leaving me no option than to do the twattish manouever of trying to get it back on the knife or straight to the bread. Inconsiderate bastard.

And don't getme STARTED on the knife making a hole in the bread.

I have a stash of dinner-money-pound-coins for when i can't be arsed making them I've ran out of bread.

I need help. Or something.

piratecat · 04/01/2012 21:11

i used to envy the kids who had packed lunches at primary, when i was little.

i thought it was really exciting to be able to unwrap things to eat!!

BehindLockNumberNine · 04/01/2012 21:11

I loathe making sandwiches for packed lunches. So now I get the dc to do it! They are 12 and 9 and they get an extra 50p pocket money each if they make sandwiches (together, nicely, without arguing) 5 nights per week.

They have a good system; we all clear the table after diner, I wipe surfaces, stack dishwasher etc whilst nine year old dd butters the bread and 12 year old ds puts on fillings and slices. Dd then places them into individual lock and lock boxes. Ds them puts them in the fridge whilst dd clears away breadboard and knife and wipes crumbs of table onto the floor.

Hoovering and mopping the floor is one of my other most loathed jobs so dh does those.

I don't mind the other jobs, dusting, cooking, cleaning, laundry, ironing etc. So I do all of those Smile

FuriousRox · 04/01/2012 22:10

I don't have to make sarnies but I'd definitely hate it. I hate cooking supper too because I run out of inspiration by Tuesday. I loathe washing up and wiping up after DD but I like hoovering and putting away laundry.

But my favourite is ironing DH's shirts (which, sadly, he knows). I love making them all crisp and, well, flat. And while I'm ironing I always think about whoever it is that irons Prince Charles's shirts and how they must be really brilliant at ironing and how they must have to get it perfect every single time, and I imagine what it must be like to have that job. So there you are. Domestic weirdness in full flow.

PinkPoncho · 04/01/2012 22:42

Don't like making sandwiches either, so they have school dinners. Think it's good to have a hot meal in the cold weather too, and gets them to try a range of things. The menu looks good lots of local veg and free range e.g. Yeo Valley yoghurts.. Don't have the option but to have them every day at school, so that's ok. Also means they can sometimes have something simple at tea time and that's good, no pressure.

Pleased that now ds1 has just started the 3 yr old nursery funding and can also have a hot meal there- well worth the £2 / 2.50..

Wondering why anyone would make sandwiches day in / day out that really despised it- I'd get resentful! Why not just give them packed lunches with leftovers, or get school dinners then?

snice · 04/01/2012 22:55

because I can't afford school dinners at £20 a week for my two

twincrazy · 04/01/2012 23:02

theres loads of different breads to buy though..I make bagels, pittas etc and sometimes if Im mega lazy the boys take pasta pots or sushi into school

ElaineReese · 04/01/2012 23:03

I hate making the packed lunch an unreasonable amount too. I always do it the night before whilst making tea things generally, but there is an irrational feeling of Oh fuck and now THAT as well, every time.
Infinitely worse than folding clean fragrant washing into lovely piles, of course!
