to think that making sandwiches for packed lunches is the worst drudge job ever?

Making sandwiches at 6am is hateful.

We take it in turns on a rota (I make them for a week, then DP, then DD) because making our own lunch in the morning would be chaos as we are all out the house by just gone 7.

I can't be doing with making them the night before because they would be vile that way (imo).

I hate it. We have only in the last 6 months or so started doing it because we found that we were spending about £50 a week on lunches out.

I am half tempted just to buy a bag of apples and everyone can starve until dinner time.

It's not as bad as making them lunch in the school holidays-there's always an argument.

I only make packed lunches for dd and me now, dh and ds sort themselves out. I am looking forward to dd (9) being at secondary, so she can make her own to. Grin

crypes · 04/01/2012 14:41

My DD got so fussy with type of bread and type of fillings that now i buy sausage rolls or scotch eggs or cheese n crackers with bananas, clementines, grapes, apples. Its not as cheap as sarnies but cheaper than school dinners.

MorningHasBroken · 04/01/2012 14:57

I'm fully in agreement with how awful it is! My morning sickness meant that the smell of food in the morning made me sick so the kids (10 and 12) had to start doing their own. Morning sickness has worn off now (16wks) but they don't know that... Wink

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 04/01/2012 15:13

Small children are easily trained to make their own sandwiches.

worldgonecrazy · 04/01/2012 15:23

My mum used to make our cheese sandwiches at the start of the week and then freeze them. The sandwich would defrost over the morning and be nice and fresh for lunchtime.

WorraLiberty · 04/01/2012 15:25

World I was just going to say, I remember reading on a forum once about a couple who made a whole month's worth of sandwiches and froze them Grin

BleurghUna · 04/01/2012 17:01

It's much easier if you do them the day before, assuming you are in less of a hurry then. I do this and they are always fine. If M&S can sell sandwiches made the day before then they must be OK?!
I always weigh up the hassle against the ££££s I am saving! Then suddlenly it seems a lot less hassle!

Vickles · 04/01/2012 18:00

Night before, and pop them in 'lock and lock' tupperware! Sorted!
Yes, sorting the washing is much worse!

SilverMachine · 04/01/2012 18:27

Dh used to make the sandwiches, but I actually swapped jobs with him recently so I now make the sandwiches and he baths the dcs and puts them to bed (we make our lunches the night before)

Slicing bread is far preferable to me than the bedtime battle routine so as far as I am concerned I have the better deal Grin

Totally agree with sorting the washing though!

Popbiscuit · 04/01/2012 18:32

Always make them the night before and have even been known to freeze them (not with veg. obviously).

And FYI: Unloading the dishwasher is the most boring household task in the universe. I'd actually rather wash-up by hand than unload the dishwasher. It's the bane of my existence and with three children it needs unloading at least three times a day.

Get0rf · 04/01/2012 18:35

I don't have a dishwasher, I enjoy washing up, I can stand there and daydream and run injternal monologues in my head.

I also don't mind laundry, but LOATHE putting it all away. So it tends to live in laundry baskets (hidden in a room) for days on end.

Popbiscuit · 04/01/2012 18:40

Exactly, GetOrf. It's almost meditational.
Agree too about putting away laundry...I have some kind of mental block about opening drawers and putting the clothes inside so everything just sits in baskets in the hallway for days.

Get0rf · 04/01/2012 18:43

And matching socks.

I got into a fit of rage a few years ago and launched all the coloured socks, and bought about 50 pairs of black ones. We all have similar size feet, so now I just shove unmatched socks in a wicker basket, and it's each man for himself.

Popbiscuit · 04/01/2012 18:47

...don't get me started on socks.

verytellytubby · 04/01/2012 18:54

Don't mind making sandwiches, I hate putting laundry away. I've binned all my boys socks and bought 30 black pairs Grin

seeker · 04/01/2012 19:02

Socks are the work of the devil.

Kytti · 04/01/2012 19:03

Oh crap! Just realised I need to make the sandwiches for packed lunches! Angry Bah.

AnnoyingOrange · 04/01/2012 19:04

I don't mind making packed lunches but I find laundry is never ending drudgery

BandOMothers · 04/01/2012 19:08

Great link mixed but why dd the twunt of a presenter assume that the Mothers had made the lunches??? My DH loves making lunches and always presents them well. I am sure there are Dads in Japan who are the same!

Flubba · 04/01/2012 19:18

ridiculously naïve emoticon

BellaVita · 04/01/2012 19:24

I hate making sandwiches too... It is like a bloody production line. I do make ours the night before as I really do not have time to faff and look at food on a morning.

In fact, I am breathing a sign of relief about tomorrow... I am giving the boys canteen money seen as there is only two days left of the wee

Popbiscuit · 04/01/2012 19:24

Awww! Precious First Sandwiches! I remember those days...all my carefully arranged little bento-boxes with Annabel Karmel offerings...

Good luck to your DCs tomorrow!

MardyBra · 04/01/2012 19:25

I do ours the night before --with a large glass of wine because i hate it so much-

BellaVita · 04/01/2012 19:26

Socks... I only sort mine and the boys. DH does his own ironing and i lob all his from the hall into the cubby hole... Sometimes they make his ironing basket and sometimes they don't Blush

BellaVita · 04/01/2012 19:27

sigh week
