There's 11 months between my 2 children and I am so fucking dick of people assuming we weren't careful or she must have been unwanted because there's only a small gap.
I actually had an old lady on the bus last week say to me " oh bless you, you're just one of the unlucky ones I guess, did you consider abortion? Having 2 so close together must be a living hell "
Ummm...no.
But having to sit next to such an ignorant bitch is.

lol at prolific common sense derailer.

OLD WOMAN on bus suggesting abortion against a backdrop of perjoraticve comments about immigrants. It's like a mumsnet version of the Daily-Mail-O-Rama automatic headline generator.

RobinSparkles · 02/01/2012 18:28

I can believe it actually. Some people can say nasty things.

My friend is a CM and was waiting for me to meet her with my DD1. She had two children in a double pushchair, one was her DS and another little boy of a similar age who she was minding. Both boys looked similar (both blonde, wavy hair and both had dummies) and a stranger walked up to her and said, "oh you poor poor thing, I feel so sorry for you with two." My friend said, "erm, actually only one is mine." To which the stranger replied, "oh thank god! I bet you're glad!" I think that that's quite offensive. They could have both been hers!

RobinSparkles · 02/01/2012 18:30

Not quite as offensive as suggesting abortion obviously but I think that the woman was implying that my friend must have been devastated to have had "twins".

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 02/01/2012 18:33

Hahahahahahahahaha TSC Grin I feel your pain.

BarfAndHeave · 02/01/2012 18:49

I applaud the OPs healthy lifestyle.

It would take a dog-farting granny to force me off the bus 5 stops before I was due to get off.

Did she happen to mention her thoughts about benefit claimants too?

Tanith · 02/01/2012 18:50

RobinSparkles, my DH once shocked a group of elderly ladies on his way in to Playgroup with all our mindees at the church.
They remarked on the number of children he had.
"...and all with different mothers!" he told them with a big smile!
It robbed them of speech Grin

My SFiL has dementia - I can well believe any rude little old lady story. He can be grossly offensive these days, yet was one of the nicest people you could meet before he became ill Sad

OP, if your lady had dementia, she certainly didn't know what she was saying so don't take it to heart.

youarekidding · 02/01/2012 18:52

I got 'told off' by a lovely older woman on the bus the other day. My friend and I decided to take DC's out to local nature park - used bus to add to enjoyment as too cold/wet to stay for long. DC's were lively!, and up down etc. We told them to sit still and the lady told us they were just having fun and not hurting anyone.

There was me thinking they were pissing off the other travellers. Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/01/2012 18:54

And am I correct in assuming you hadn't folded your phil n' teds down - blimey - am surprised the lady didn't comment on that too Wink

I know a few people with very small gaps - none were exactly planned.

Sorry but I can totally understand that the old woman on the bus is real. My MIL and her mother also are very very prone to asking people hideous things and thinking nothing of it. They then get offended if they get told to bog off and complain about how rude the youth are. OP if people on here are lucky enough to have never come across ignorant old people then bully for them but I live in the same world you do hun where the world owes them a living and anyone under 40 is to be talked down to.

MrsWhitaker · 02/01/2012 19:05

Not to say I don't respect my elders. I will happily respect EVERYONE I meet no matter what age until they do something to lose it

Is Sarf London the same as Surrey where NeroNat said she's from?

nooka · 02/01/2012 19:19

People can say weird and wonderful things it's true. I don't much like all the 'well it is South London' bits. I'm a South Londoner and it's not some sort of alien jungle full of weirdos (well no more than anywhere else IMO)

I have a 16mth gap between my children and we have had a few comments over the years. I don't think any were hurtful, but then dd was an accident, it was bloody hard, and yes they do look like twins (in fact at the moment dd looks older). So I'd probably be agreeing with half of them.

Parents/mums do get comments, it seems to go with the territory. I think that you have to take them as the beginning of a conversation, develop a thick skin or learn some come backs (or a combination).

wildfig · 02/01/2012 19:27

Sarf London turns into Surrey if you stay on the bus long enough.

LineRunner · 02/01/2012 19:34

The Kingston-on-Thames to Tooting Bec ride, for example, takes a reasonably long time.

PercyFilth · 02/01/2012 19:38

Sarf London turns into Surrey if you stay on the bus long enough

So probably not if you get off five stops early :o

notveryinventive · 02/01/2012 19:40

My Dad asked me if DC3 was planned as we already had a DS and a DD. They assumed we wouldnt want any more Hmm

Im willing to believe the story as I see no reason why it cant be true.

LineRunner · 02/01/2012 19:42

Kingston-on-Thames to Tooting Be, five stops early, would leave you in bandit territory.
