to think 7yo is not too old for a comforter?

My dc only just 7 still has a cuddly toy, that is kept on their bed purely for sleep time.

Over the holidays they have been to friend's houses, and at the bottom of the bag is their cuddly toy.

Everyone of these mothers' of friends has commented that my dc is too old for a comforter. I said but it's only used at night, and they did confirm it only came out when it was bedtime, and was put away as soon as my dc got out of bed.

So I can't see the harm of my dc having it.

My DS (almost 7y) still sleeps with a pile of stuffed animals and a muslin that I first gave him at 4- 5 months old when I moved him into his cot (not the same actual one , had lots so could wash them). He says he doesn't want to give up the "raggie" yet and I'm not going to force him. Absolutely pointless to do that to a small child. All these soft toys and his raggie have always stayed home and when little he had one little friend (a soft mouse) in the buggy and a bunny at nursery. Nowadays we have one" travelling lamb " and a raggie when we go on trips. The other moms seem to act a bit weird... When I was little I also had a lot of stuffed animals in my bed and don't remember it ever being an issue. Not sure when I gave them up.

I have a relative who is in her late 20s and still has her baby blanket - well what's left of it. Also a friend 30s with a pillow she needs to sleep.

7 is not too old.

TroublesomeEx · 02/01/2012 06:21

7 is not too old.

DS is 13 and he still sleeps with his favourite bear. He no longer takes him on Scout camp... but it still goes away with us and has pride of place in his bed every night.

I agree with everyone who has said some people are in too much of a hurry to turn children into adults. Let them enjoy being children for as long as they want to!

mathanxiety · 02/01/2012 08:02

Just remembered DS's 'Small Soldier' who accompanied him to school every day until he was about 7 (or maybe 8) and stayed in his bag. Small Soldier was a small unidentifiable martial action figure that he found one day while digging in the garden and spent many hours scrubbing and cleaning. He was DS's favourite thing for a long time.

Grumpla · 02/01/2012 08:11

I slept with my cuddly until I had DS in my late 20s. The only reason I then removed cuddly from my bed was that I was worried baby DS would want to steal him away from me Blush

In fact having DS also meant I was never really alone after that (DH frequently works away) so I no longer 'needed' my cuddly to keep me company in the same way.

I also sucked my thumb until I was about 14 and guess what? My teeth are FINE!

YANBU and you should tell the others to piss off. Having a comforter is perfectly normal and healthy.

gothicangel · 02/01/2012 08:14

YANBU,

i think it lovely, kids being kids,

tbh i still have my fav cuddley toy, doesnt share my bed though, but i would happily kick out hubby so she could haa haa xx

bigTillyMint · 02/01/2012 08:18

YANBU

A teddy/other comforter is ALWAYS an item on the cub camp list, and on the School Journey list for Year 6. Just as well as DS still has "clothie" even though he is nearly 11 and very much an Alpha boy Grin

FWIW, I think that the child will make the decision as to when they no longer need/want it and that parents who remove them are being unreasonable and controlling.

whatdoiknowanyway · 02/01/2012 08:26

When DD first went on brownie camp aged 7 I put her 'soft', an old shirt of her Dad's, into the bottom of her sleeping bag so she wouldn't get teased.

When she went on post A level holiday with her school friends it was at the top of her bag and is openly kept on her bed at university.

Coralanne · 02/01/2012 08:26

My 8 year old DGD has two. "Sunshine". a build a bear she made when she was 3 and "Poppy Dog". A soft toy puppy given to her by her Godmother on her Baptism day.

When DGD stays over at my home, they both come with her.

Although now she uses my computer to print up a timetable for them and me when she goes next door to play.

Things like,

Take Sunshine and Poppydog for a walk.

Read them a story.

Make their lunch.

Then she sets the webcam on the computer so she can check if all her instructions are being carried out.

AnnoyingOrange · 02/01/2012 08:28

My 12 yr old still has a collection of furry friends in his bed.

Avantia · 02/01/2012 08:43

Not too old for a bedtime cuddly toy .

Canella · 02/01/2012 08:51

I'm packing this morning to go on holiday and ds1 (7) is very definitely taking his cuddly dog with him. Dd (10) still sleeps with magic bear - he was the first cuddly toy given to her after she was born.
So NO def not too old.

I have a dog which I have had since I was 5 and despite him living on the shelf most of the time he occasionally spends the night in bed with me - I always sleep better when he does.
I also have a smaller teddy that I got when I was 9 that is specifically for sleepovers and camps as dog is too precious.
I would be outraged (well at least irritated) if my friends suggested my 7yr old couldn't take a cuddly for a sleepover.

Chandon · 02/01/2012 09:07

Nine year old DS still has loads and takes one if he goes for a sleepover. His mates still have them too . But then, boys are softies (sweet).

pinkhousesarebest · 02/01/2012 09:28

Why don't you get them all to read this www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/may/16/a-letter-to-the-blanket

Sniffs loudly.

befuzzled · 02/01/2012 12:36

that'll be me in a few years time ....

valiumredhead · 02/01/2012 12:40

Ds is 10 and is often found wrapped round one of his teds at night :)

guinealady · 02/01/2012 12:48

cough I am 35 and still have a toy monkey in my bed (no that's not the name I give my OH...)

I gave up having a cuddly toy in bed when I went to university as I thought I'd better try and outgrow it, only to find most of the girls at uni had soft toys in their rooms! Gradually they snuck back into my bed, and whilst I'm not the sort of person to have fluffy toys all over the house, I still love having something to snuggle against in bed.

I do sleep fine without a toy when I go away, though, but it's just one of the comforting things I associate with being at home in my own bed, like my pillow, my favourite nightie, my comfy mattress, etc.

Megatron · 02/01/2012 13:03

My almost 8 year old DS can barely get into bed at night for his cuddlys. It's a right bloody palaver when he goes to bed as he has to arrange them a certain way, some on either side and he sleeps on top of some of them too. He's just a kid and I would find it odd if a child that age didn't have something.

I'm 44 and the bear my dad gave me the day I was born still sits in our room.

i think its ok my daughters nine and she enjoys a cuddle with her teddies at night. people are trying to make them grow up before there time. i think i was still playing with barbies and keepers at that age. the keepers seems ages ago nowSmile

rhondajean · 02/01/2012 13:41

DD2 is 7 and is currently wrapped I here blankie watching hocus locus with me.

It's more strings than blanket and it smells though I do pop it in the machine when I can.

I do worry because she refers to it as she and gives it likes and emotions....

DD1 on the other hand never had anything she was overly attached to.

They are all different and I'd never rush them to get rid of them - unlike dummies which can eventually cause tooth problems!

rhondajean · 02/01/2012 13:41

In her blankie watching hocus pocus.

Damn autocorrect.
