to think 7yo is not too old for a comforter?

My dc only just 7 still has a cuddly toy, that is kept on their bed purely for sleep time.

Over the holidays they have been to friend's houses, and at the bottom of the bag is their cuddly toy.

Everyone of these mothers' of friends has commented that my dc is too old for a comforter. I said but it's only used at night, and they did confirm it only came out when it was bedtime, and was put away as soon as my dc got out of bed.

So I can't see the harm of my dc having it.

Mabel I am sure you are that research now suggests that a dummy can help reduce the risk of sid.

When Ds was in hdu at 8 weeks old the staff actively enc

Sirzy · 01/01/2012 23:19

(oops silly phone) actively encouraged me to give a dummy as it helps to regulate breathing.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 01/01/2012 23:21

A1980 - yes, exactly. When he gets hold of the revolting comforter thing the thumb goes in too.

MrsEricBana · 01/01/2012 23:27

ds aged 11 recently went on a school rugby and netball tour - 2d, 3n - and they were each given a new tour bag which had mesh compartment at one end, presumably for wet boots. Before they set off all the bags were put in school hall and I can tell you that every single one had a cuddly of some sort peering out from behind the mesh. Having said that, ds normally leaves his precious dog at home for sleepovers. Dd just 9 still carts teddy around with her a lot though doesn't take her out in public in case gets lost (and takes a ceddle on sleepovers, and all her friends who come to sleep here bring a cuddle too). Of course it is fine for your ds - don't take any notice of these mums and as others have said it is extremely odd that they have seen fit to comment.

MrsEricBana · 01/01/2012 23:28

cuddly not ceddle/cuddle!

wonkylegs · 01/01/2012 23:29

I still have my doggie, sits on the head of my bed. I took him with me to sleep til I started sleeping with boys Grin

LittleJennyRobyn · 01/01/2012 23:32

My DD is 8 (will be 9 in march) and still has her comorters from a baby, She will not sleep without them and takes them to sleepovers. She carries them around the house and will try to sneak them out in the car when we go out.

I will let her have her comforters as long as she wants them.

She is also a thumb sucker but like Endo Says you cannot get rid of a thumb, would have been so much easier with a dummy. But of course the two go hand in hand.

I also had my comfort blanket and sucked my thumb until the age of 10.

Never to old for a comforter. My nearly 9 year old dd, still has a favourite bear, her dad recently told her that only babies take teddies to bed.

ChasingSquirrels · 01/01/2012 23:39

"small Comfortable Friend" just made me well up!

ds1 (9yo) has "puppy" which was given to us for him at 6 wks old. Puppy is one beat up little toy, but ds loves him. He doesn't need him to get to sleep, but he certainly prefers having him. We went to a friend's last night and the boys went to bed there, and he took puppy with him

ds2 (nearly 6yo) had an assortment, and his fav is usually the most recently acquired (from school fairs etc - yuk).

No intention of ever making them "give them up".

marriedinwhite · 01/01/2012 23:51

I slept with my cot pillow until it more or less disintegrated until I was about 35. I weaned myself off it once I met DH. DD still has a soft toy and she's 13 and DS has been known to sleep with a cricket bat after a really good innings.

Nowadays I make do with DH and the cats and when dh is away dd's still happy to be my comforter.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 02/01/2012 00:04

My 15 year old has 'Joseph' an ancient pram toy that he CANNOT sleep without. Ok he has LDs and autism , but nevertheless disabilities aside he needs it...

And DD1 is 20 this month. I have just repaired her rag doll..again... she brought it home from Uni at Xmas so I could sew it back together as she cannot sleep without it... she is a typical uni student.. but ragdoll matters to her still and I can't see why a comforter would ever be a problem at any age!

startail · 02/01/2012 00:15

Hello my name is Honey I am a 44 year old bear. I've lived on a shelf for 21 years. Pushed out of my rightful place by a big hairy manAngry
But for 23 years I kept "star" company most nights.
7 too old for a comforter, any Brownie leader worth her salt puts teddy bear on the kit list.

McHappyPants2012 · 02/01/2012 00:21

well judge me all you want, but i have had my bear since i was 11 days old......... i have not had 1 night sleep with out him ( i am 26)

fortyplus · 02/01/2012 00:30

So... cuddly toys ok till 35... dummies till 2... and give your child a dummy or you'll have to chop off their thumbs later? Grin

ps ds2 never had a 'special' teddy even though he loved soft toys. ds1 is 18 and still had his threadbare baby toy on the shelf next to his bed until a few years ago. Funnily enough he always took something different away to Cub camp - I think he was worried about losing his favourite one.

brighthair · 02/01/2012 01:07

I was given a sad Sam dog as a baby, slept with it every night until I was 23 and in between moving house I lost him Sad
Mum bought me a replacement - not a sad Sam as we cant find another

McHappyPants2012 · 02/01/2012 01:19

fortyplus...what can i have my bear till i am 35....may sound childish, immuture blah blah blah....but he will come to the grave with me.

MrsBovary · 02/01/2012 01:23

Yanbu. My eight year old dd still has to have her comfort blanket and rabbit for bedtime.

fortyplus · 02/01/2012 01:24

McHappyPants2012 bear needs a special little shelf to sit on otherwise you'll wear him out! Poor bear Wink

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 02/01/2012 01:26

Patience It's not unusual at all for a child to have a 'best friend' that they sleep with (or blankie) I'm a decade or two splutter older than your DC and I still have mine! She no longer comes to bed with me, but she does come out for a cuddle :)

However - if it's not the 'norm' amongst your DCs friends, it might be kindest to suggest that teddy stays home so he doesn't get thrown around or messed about it by the other children... for teddy's safety you understand Wink Would your DC get any comfort from taking something less 'controversial' such as a favourite t-shirt or something?

whethergirl · 02/01/2012 01:37

When my DS (age 6 at the time) lost his cuddly bedtime cat we had to put up posters up in the neighbourhood "Missing Cat" with a picture of said cuddly toy! Unfortunately he had to be replaced with the closest thing I could find to the original and he still sleeps with it, age 7. And we can't ever talk about the missing cat incident, ds just wells up and gets too upset.

My friend had a proper fall out with her dh the other day because he said that her childhood cabbage patch doll actually stank of cabbage. She was not happy. I'm just glad he didn't say "it's me or the doll" because he'd be packing his bags.

brighthair · 02/01/2012 03:00

Fortyplus - almost the same!! Mine was a sat up one Grin

mathanxiety · 02/01/2012 03:21

DD3's friend (age 13.5) brings the last vestige of her blankie with her when she sleeps over. It's just a small length of satin trim. DD3 would love to bring the cat with her when she goes on sleepovers but the cat has other ideas. She and the cat are inseparable at night when she's at home. DD4 (10) has a menagerie all over her bed, and three special familiars who accompany her everywhere she goes. Her best friends all have their own furry friends too.
